  • REVIEW of Mijello Mission Gold Class Watercolors Pure Pigment Set
    *At the time of filming I was not an amazon affiliate but I am now.
    I am updating this link to a better price: amzn.to/3A4BM0o
    I found this set on Amazon: amzn.to/2nuo263 to buy these tubes on sale at Jerry's Artarmama or Blick would cost $334 OR over $500 retail
    Reviews were very good on these sites so i decided to order the pure pigment set instead of the other sets they offer because I wanted single pigment colors, that what I could mix the rest.
    All of the colors have Excellent or very good lightfastness ratings.
    I am so pleased with these paints and with the price I paid. I received them 3 days after ordering and I do not have prime. Shipping was also free.
    This set has 24 15ml tubes plus 2 7ml tubes (black/white)
    These are high quality artist watercolors and they are very transparent even though some of the labels rated some colors as semi transparent I found all but the red-browns and yellow ochre to be very transparent.
    *I personally purchased these paints and was not asked to do a review or compensated for it.

    I've been using this for a while and I'm amazed by these paints. I have the 34pc.15ml.set which doesn't have black and white. It's called the "Asian" set. There is a European and a US set as well. You can choose. I doubt that I will need to buy any more paint for five years at the least. My set has dried for over a month and with a touch of a damp brush the color exploded on paper. Now what I want is a really good travel palette. Thanks for the review. I was pretty sure that you'd like them. I so enjoy your Demos!

      Sometimes it is cheaper to but a small palette of half pans then to buy the empty palettes. TRy the tropical prima palette, it is about $22 but the metal palette on it's own is $24 in an art shop. The paints aren't bad either but you could always pop them out and refill. the 12 color cotman sketcher box or lukas studio can be used this way as well.

      Thanks Lindsey........I've taken your advice and bought a Lukas, 48 empty 1/2 pan set. That way I can add my Missions and some original mixes. I'm one of those that needs to cut back on supplies but I still need the right ones for the right situations. You are so helpful. I am about to attempt creating a watercolor block with a glue gun. Can you tell me what kind you use and where to find it? Thanks you for all the wonderful tips, tricks, techniques and encouragement. You are the frosting on the cake to me!

      I use a surebonder, they seem to last longer than other brands because I use them all the time, make sure it is a high temp or dual temp gun as I think high temp gives a stronger bond and more working time. I use whatever dual temp glue sticks are on sale:)

    Hi Lindsay, I just wanted to say I know that this video is 5 years old, but you really sold me on this set and I just purchased it a few weeks back and I absolutely love them. There are colour differences in the set that is sold now, less reds and an addition of a cobalt turquoise. I've mixed soooo many bright lovely colours from them and I feel like I got a bargain for the price/size of the tubes/mixing potential which really extends out the colour range in this set. The paints are soooo pigmented and are super easy to work with after they've dried. I've now watched a tonne of your reviews on different paints and I super enjoy them. Thanks for sharing your knowledge, Katie 😊

    Btw lemon yellows just in case anyone wonders: they are usually either Nickel Titanate (greyish in palette but fine when painted) or Nickel Azo Yellow (the VERY greyish one). Cadmium Lemons are normally really "clean" - cadmium yellow pigment just v dilute. Some lemons use Benzimidazolone Yellow H6G which is a bit green - I don't like it (Winsor Lemon uses it). There is a nice pigment PY159 I have not used yet - Zirconium Praseodymium Silicate - should be quite granulating as it is a silicate - praseodymium is a rare earth metal (I work on those in my day job) and they have beautiful colours in their salts and interesting optical effects so I do want to try it. Bismuth Yellow (Bismuth Vanadate) is a very vivid lemon - green undertones but a bit "in your face".

    Thank you so much for doing this I have had my eye on these paints for a while (since I saw Owening Art do a review) but couldn't make up my mind, but you have helped me make the decision to get them. I am so excited that you did this. Good job on explaining why you chose this set it helps me in my decision. Again Thank you so much!

    I also have the 36 color set after seeing a review several months back here on TH-cam. I really like the vibrancy of them and they re-wet like a dream. That being said, I'm not sure if it's a translation issue or just calling them by the wrong names, but a lot of their names are incorrect. Their cerulean that you mentioned looked like phthalo is in fact the same pigment as phthalo blue from all other companies. There are several others with oddities as well such as their "cobalt" is ultramarine + phthalo, and their "burnt sienna" is a weird assortment of pigments rather than PBr 7. Like I mentioned, I do really enjoy their bright colors, but I still use my self-assembled Daniel Smith palette 99% of the time. Perhaps if I had gotten the pure pigment set I'd be a bit happier with the consistency of my colors, but I will still keep these on hand for cards or if I'm doing something bright.

    • @MsCrickBG3
      @MsCrickBG3 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I should also add that I do LOVE their yellows. They are brighter and more transparent than my Daniel Smiths.

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +Denise Soden I agree! Cerulean is def pthalo and their cobalt is too green. I have a holbien colbalt that is also that way so I wonder if there is a translation issue in Asia with some paint names.

    I have a 24 set I got last year, also from amazon for like $45. But seeing this makes me want this pure pigment set! The addiction never ends! lol I did feel like some colors are so bright and vibrant they can look fake, I really have to work to not to use too much pigment. I dislike their greens too, especially their version of Sap Green, more like neon! But easily fixed by mixing with other colors and too vibrant is better than too dull. For storage, I got a metal folding palette with removable pans (again amazon) and the paint has never cracked or dried into a hard rock, they always seem a tad bit tacky even after a month of not touching them, assuming bc they are always covered/contained. Can't wait to see your tutorial with these & what mixes you use!

    +thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich I have the 36 set and I really love them. They have now become my favorite paints even more than Daniel Smith watercolors. I wish I would have known about this 24 set but I'm glad you were able to find them and share with us because I think this would be a nice add on to what I already have. Yes the 36 set is 7 ml and comes with a nice pallet as well. Using the amount of water that you do with your Turners will be more than adequate once they are dry in your pallet. They are also really user friendly (in my opinion) and I personally believe they would be wonderful for those who want to start in watercolors because they are so easy to use and blend so beautifully. I love that they aren't wanting to turn brown so easily like I have seen with other watercolors. Beautiful colors and most of them have really great lightfast. Hope this helps anyone who has any questions and if there is something I can answer for anyone I will do my best.

      I'm a scrapbooker and decided to play with watercolor and fell in love. I need to purchase an artists' quality set. Would this be the best option for me? I only have a few Winsor & Newton student grade.

    • @beaudeleon2532
      @beaudeleon2532 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Liette Hudson this in my opinion would absolutely be an option for you. However, I would start with the 36 color set and I will tell you why. Even though in the set that Lindsay has here it has much bigger tubes of paint and are very much so worth the money, they are all pure colors which means if there isn't an orange color that you like here then you have to mix your own colors. Which in my opinion is one of the hardest thing to learn how to do when it comes to watercoloring. So the 36 set comes with a beautiful pallet of mixed & pure colors that you can work with. If you love the paints, which I suspect you will, then go back and pick these up and start learning how to mix. You can beat the price for those large tubes. It does come with a mixture chart which is great that they include and the 36 set has a pallet which is awesome too. If you end up getting the 36 and want to learn how to make a swatch that will fit into the pallet, let me know and I can link u to a video

    • @beaudeleon2532
      @beaudeleon2532 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Liette Hudson you will see a huge difference between these and Cottman btw. They are good but no where near as pigmented as these because the Cottman have more fillers.

    • @liettehudson671
      @liettehudson671 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Beau DeLeon I was wondering if the set of 36 has a nice variety of pure pigment to learn how to start mixing colours? Thanks for all your comments this helps.

    • @beaudeleon2532
      @beaudeleon2532 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Liette Hudson it does have some but if that's what you're looking for then I would personally go with the set Lindsay has here because it will give you more opportunities to mix and learn. For the money this one really is a better buy when you look at the size of the tubes. The 36 set only comes with 7mL tubes for $50-$68 where this one is a little more at about $89 but the tubes are 15mL so you will get more practice with what you have here compared to the 7mL tubes that can go pretty fast if you aren't careful and don't know how to prepare your pallet correctly. Hope this helps and no problem.

    Hello Lindsay! I purchased these based on your review and i'm very happy (just trying them out today!) But one thing that's not included is the mixing chart and the advice for how to set them up in a palette in terms of order... would you know if a photo or pdf of that brochure that you have is available anywhere? Or might you have the bandwidth to put it up on your site? I fould one foto online, but the text is illegible... And no worries if you can't... thanks again for the help !!!

    So even though I REALLY didn't need more water colors, I bought these and was AMAZED by how fast they came in the mail! Tow days. TWO DAYS!! And I paid for the cheap shipping! It came with a free palette too, a nice sturdy, 24 wells. I already had some of their colors (shopaholic here), so I already know that I like them. Thanks for letting us know about this deal!

    Thank you so much for reviewing these- I'd picked a few of the mixed paints on sale at my local Jerry's, and was pretty disappointed, but it seems like the pure pigments handle much better! If you're looking to add individual colors to your Mission collection, hitting a Jerry's in person might help you find them on sale- all the Mission Gold paints have been on sale on several occasions when I hit the Nashville location.

    Steve@ The Mind of Watercolor did a review of these 24 color pan set a few months ago. He really liked them. They came in a beautiful gold tone palette. I resisted the urge to buy them because I already have a lot of artists' quality WC paints by various manufacturers, both tube and pan. Still I like seeing reviews and you did a great job with this one.

    LOVE the Mission Gold set so much, went back to Amazon and got the 36 5 ml set - also a great price $57.50 which includes a 36 color palette. Only 12 duplicates (excluding useless black and white) but since they are the pure pigments, can't go wrong! It is very nice to have convenience colors like sap green and burnt sienna! Your frugal recommendations are wonderful - keep em comin'!

    Thank you for this Lindsay. The mission gold ultramarine blue is my first tube of artist grade watercolor ever. I started with kids stuff and then cotmans, then the sonnets and I have just ordered the 18 set of the shinhan to replace the sonnets and since i run through ultramarine like nobodies business i decided to buy an open stock tube of it in a professional grade and mission gold was the cheapest for the most paint. its around $14.50 AUD for 15ml. If all goes well with it i think i will slowly build up my artist grade collection with it as it is so easily accessible here (Which is really rare) and for a decent price too!
    I appreciate all the information you give us for free, you will never know how much you have helped me grow as an artist.

My watercolor pan is different than the one you received, it's very nice, I would recommend these to anyone who is a serious watercolorist or a serious learner. The description of the Pure Pigment set states each color contains only one pigment to boost color mixing outcomes.

    I have the 36 palette set. I like them very much, the colors are wonderful, although some color names don't match the pigments sometimes. I noticed that some colors don't have as much of a tinting strength. (EX. Ivory black, Prussian blue, permanent red) They apply extremely dark looking but dry extremely faded. Way more than my Yarka set or my Turners. Still, I got them for 60 dollars on Amazon, so it was a great deal! I love the palette, it is large enough for mixing, but small enough to fit on my desk.
    I am super happy to see your review on these paints! Can't wait to watch the strawberry tutorial tomorrow! The Mijellos re-wet very easily in my opinion, though I've never used M.Graham watercolors, so maybe compared to them, they don't re-wet as well?

It's hard to find in the USA but Zoltan Szabo used it often in his basic palette. Dick Blick is the only one who carries it presently. Jerry's only has 4 colors of their giant pans. This set is now difficult to get and is being offered at almost 3x the price with the 15 ml tubes on line. Amazon does have a set of 7ml 24set for around $50. But if people are looking for larger tubes of single pigments, it might be better to go with Daniel Smith, M Graham or even Schminke, since Mission Gold are about the same price. Great review!

    Hi Lindsay, again an excellent review. How would you compare these to, say, Holbein wc? Right now, Holbein is my standard, and I know I've set the bar pretty high, but I do love pure pigments, and in fact, often mix my own wc's from dry pigment. So, I guess I'm somewhat picky. But...if it was a choice between these and others, maybe I'll have to try them out!

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't have a ton of experience with Holbein (I have the 18 color set) but I will till you that Holbein feels "heavier" to me when I use it and MG feels more light and ethereal. I's say pigment strength wise they are equal but the MG is more high chroma.

      A Royal Majestic, I think it is a #8, these are fabulous and inexpensive. They are synthetic so you won't get too much water like you would with a sable or faux sable.Even the big ones come to a sharp point too:) I hope you like the 36 set, if you think of it let me know how you like them:)

I have White Nights in my wish list and really love the reviews I've seen but now I'm unsure which way to go - pan with White Nights or tube with Mission Gold? Certainly I can access White Nights easier but I only want one set - a good set l. Which would you choose from the two? great review by the way :) shall be looking out for your strawberry tutorial in a bit xx

    How do you tell which colors are the pure colors if you are not buying a set and buying individual tubes? I am having trouble finding how to identify that. Also is there a place to identify which colors are warm and which are cool. Sometimes it is hard to tell, because not all blues are cool and not all reds are warm. I wish the companies would just put a "W" or a "C" to identify which color is warm and which is cool. Thanks so much! Love your channel always!

      Bought the trays and works great and saved $120 i buying the metal and pants. Also, just be careful with this 34 set. The is an Asian Set, U.S. Set, and E.U. set. The set I bought on Amazon was the Asian, so did not include Ivory Black or Chinese White, but had two other colors. Anywho, just a warning to your viewers that the colors included are different based on the "market" set. Love them though!

    Hi Lindsay, just 2 more things about this set, that you might want to let folks know if they are thinking of buying it:
    1. The set that is being sent out now (different seller) no longer has the Prussian Blue, and instead it has a Phthalocyanine blue
    2. You probably mentioned this in the video, but it bears reminding -- none of these colors lend themselves much to granulation... (do you have any tips for a paint color to buy from another brand and which, to help create granulating effects, if one has this set?)

    • @thefrugalcrafter

    Lindsey, I know this is an older video, so I hope you can respond to my comment. I have both this 26 P.P set and the 34 tube Aisian set. I filled 2 metal pallettes with full pans, and have 5 spaces left. 56 pans total count .
    My question: To add more granulating colors, should I look at another honey based line, such as M.Graham, or go to a few Daniel Smith colors? The reason being I read that these paints aren't really granulating and I want to fill out my range.

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Daniel Smith and schminke have some really nice granulating colors. Is choose colors that are single pigment that you can mix to get the coloring separating effects. I just picked up a potter's pink from Maimerei blu that is nice. Turner mars black and ultramarine blue deep is good. Most colbalt colors granulate. Have fun choosing!

  • @deafblood
    @deafblood 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I purchased the 36 set of paints despite the smaller tubes because of the palette that came with it- mostly because I didn't have a palette big enough to fit all 36 paints and would have had to purchase a new one anyway. The difference between colours included in the 34 set and the 36 set seems to be Orange and Red Violet.
    I quite like my set since I don't display my art in sunlight (no risk of fading from fugitive colours) and having 36 to choose from means I don't have to mix as much and don't get the 'mud' that most artists complain about when using the two-pigment paints. My set also hasn't dried completely in the palette and remains 'sticky' to the touch (semi-moist) so rewetting to paint again is an absolute breeze. I can't believe how strong and vibrant these colours are. I'm a painter that hates pale, overly transparent watercolours so these are perfect for me- tied for my favourite with St. Petersburg.

    • @journalkitty3957
      @journalkitty3957 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm torn between these and the White Nights (st Petersburg) which would you recommend to someone who can only buy one ?

    • @deafblood
      @deafblood 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Journal Kitty
      I, personally, would go with White Nights if I could only have one. BUT I bought the WK paints first, and also haven't painted a whole lot with the Mijello brand.
      I will say that you can get the 24 set for $30 from www.artsupplies.co.uk/item-white-nights-24-whole-pan-set.htm (and you can fit twelve more colours in the same set so you can buy individual colours for the cheapest on the net).
      I bought all 54 colours for around 75$ and placed them in an empty Cotman 45 watercolour palette (which I bought from the same website for 10$) The pans DO fit in the palette, but not snugly, so I recommend using sticky tack to keep them in place (or just not traveling with them)
      Here's a photo of all the colours sorted in the two palettes: 67.media.tumblr.com/1df7b2ec556aa9db19074d4e88372eb8/tumblr_oalhmuoBj91r30c9ko1_1280.jpg

    I just wanted to pop in and let you know that you didn't miss much on the free palette that came with these paints. It has a lot of room for paint in the pan, but there are only two very small mixing areas. Aside from this, it has no lid. I had no empty palettes so I am using it but going to keep in inside my air tight acrylic container that I have laying around. I would give the palette a 1 out of 5 stars. I would say 0 if it didn't have deep wells for the paint to be in.

    I have Amazon Prime so this excites me, though with all of the colors I already own in other brands, it may still be less than $86 to buy just the few tones that I'm into tha are distinct from what I have, particularly the greens, Van Dyke Brown, and permanent magenta as Turner's Quin Magenta skews slightly purple (and I saw a Van Dyke Green which looks like a Perylene green, very dark and gray toned). I did cringe a little when I saw a single tube of Perm Magenta is $17.99 on Jerry's (more than some of my Daniel Smith paints!) but we'll see which route I end up going. Also excited for tomorrow's tutorial as I love strawberries!

      I know, even the sale prices are crazy, I am glad I was able to snag the set for $86. These were shipped from korea so maybe they came direct from the factory.

    Ok I've checked through ALL the colours in this set now and these are all of them, showing the odd/dodgy ones - a LOT are dyes, which concerns me given the high prices - a LOT are fugitive as _pigments_ though that doesn't mean the finished paint is too, as they may have UV-resistant binders.
    "Lemon Yellow" is not a typical lemon - it's Hansa Yellow 10G (PY3), which is fugitive when used very dilute.
    "Primary Yellow" is Benzimidazolone Yellow 154 (PY154) - this is as close to Process Yellow as you can get.
    "Perm Yellow Deep" is Hansa yellow 65 (PY65) - usually in "Hansa Yellow Deep" type colours.
    "Red Orange" is your typical Pyrrol Orange (PO73).
    "Scarlet Lake" is Naphthol Red AS-D (PR112) - this is fugitive and will dull and go muddy - not very "permanent" is it?!
    "Perm Red" is Naphthol Red AS-D (PR112) - this is fugitive and will dull and go muddy - not very "permanent" is it?!
    [note the above are quite same-y on the page - makes sense, same pigment]
    "Perm Red Deep" is Pyrolle Red (PR254) - again, fugitive - it darkens and blues over time.
    "Cherry Red" is the other Quin Red (PR209) - again, fugitive - it also blues with time.
    "Indian Red" is PR101 (Red Iron Oxide) as it should be.
    "Crimson Lake" is Quin Crimson (PR202) - not a lake but not fugitive at least.
    "Perm Rose" is Quin Rose (PV19) as one would expect it to be - but this also blues with time - most quins are fugitive!
    "Perylene Maroon" is indeed Perylene Maroon (PR179) - this does fade a bit but it's not too bad.
    "Rose Madder" is made of PR176 Benzimidazolone Carmine (should be NR8 or NR9 if it's genuine or can be PR83 (Alizarin Crimson - synthetic rose madder, basically) or PR122 (Quin Red) is sometimes used - PR176 is, as such, an odd choice) - this is fugitive and turns more blue as it fades so keep an eye on this one.
    "Perm Magenta" is PR122 (Quin Red) - this fades and neutralises - becomes less of a magenta and more of a red as it fades.
    "Cerulean Blue" is Phthalocyanine Blue BGS (PB15:3) - this is the blue-green Phthalo Blue - Cerulean Blue should by rights be a Cobalt Chromate mineral pigment, not a dye.
    "Prussian Blue" is indeed Prussian Blue (PB27) - this can brown in bright sunlight but it is totally reversible in the dark.
    "Cobalt Blue No. 2" is indeed Cobalt Blue (PB28) - cobalt aluminate/blue spinel - lovely granulating pigment.
    "Ultramarine Light" is Ultramarine Blue (PB29), as it should be.
    "Viridian" should be chromic hydroxide (PG18) but they have used Phthalo Green BS (PG7).
    "Bamboo Green" is Phthalo Green YS (PG36), hence why they look very same-y!
    "Yellow Ochre No. 2" is Hydrated Ferric Oxide (PY43), as it normally is.
    "Green Gold" - now this one is weird, they've used Nickel Azo Yellow (PY150), which is one of those grey-ish lemons I've mentioned to you in another post and that I know you don't like - it's also a bit prone to fading but not much. Green Gold proper is Irgazin Yellow (PY129), which doesn't fade.
    "Red Brown" is Benzimidazolone Brown (PBr25) - this is quite nice as it's a synthetic dye brown - you should get good luminosity through it.
    "Vandyke Brown" is Brown Iron Oxide (PBr7) - this is usually used in Burnt Sienna, true Van Dyke Brown (NBr8) is Lignite, but Manganese Brown (PBr8) is often used instead.
    "Chinese White" is Titanium White (PW6) - Chinese White is usually either Zinc White (PW4) alone or mixed with Titanium White - the latter is the cheaper option, hence why I guess they have used it? Why not just call it Titanium White? Unless they made it so dilute that it is translucent and looks like Chinese White?
    "Ivory Black" is made from Lamp Black (PBk7) - this is not usual. PBk9 (Bone Black) is usually used for Ivory Blacks - note they are obviously all carbon but the impurities are different which impacts tone, granulation etc etc.

      That's a lot of bollox, to put it most honestly. I think I did stumble upon your review (as you linked in a separate comment) when I was taking an interest in these paints, and found it overly criticising and not really fair. A lot of pigments used in this set are also used in common watercolour(artist's or not) sets. Perhaps you're confused as the set suggests the pigments being 'pure' - this is only a marketing trick, and they simply mean that the paints are all single pigmented. And 'dyes'? Lots of artist watercolour paints use synthetic 'dyes', and they're still classified as pigments. I find your use of the term very misleading.
      I have to agree that the prices for these are rather high for what they are, but I believe that's not really Mijello's fault. It's the retailers ballooning up the prices. And I can imagine they price these higher in the hopes of gullible customers falling for the 'exotic nature' since it's from Korea. In Korea, these are priced only as high as other professional/artist quality sets.

    Are these worth it. It seems like the price has risen considerably over the last few years and I’ve heard conflicting views about the tubes. After you let them dry in a palette, how do they behave? I’m interested in buying a cheap watercolor tube set that fills at least 24 half pans so that I can complete a palette of mine (the other half will be 24 renesans that I recently purchased). I’m considering grumbacher academy (after watching your review), mission gold, Marie’s extra fine watercolor, but not sure which one to pick.

      I'd pass on the Maries, they crack and fall out and have an odd smell to them. The mission gold are artist grade and this set is single pigment which makes them awesome for mixing. They have held up well. The grumbachers and Vangogh are great student quality and much cheaper than MG, I do not regret my purchase at $80, I'm not sure what they are now, the tubes were 15ml so it was a steal

      @@thefrugalcrafter yeah I’d probably stick with the grumbacher as mission gold pure pigment has gone up to twice the price (around 157 dollars). Cotman is also on sale at Jerry’s. So I’m considering buying a couple tubes. Is grumbacher or Cotman better at earth tones and granulation?

      @@kamalitarajagopalan2671 I'd go for grumbacher or vangogh over cotman

    I just bought the set of 24! I don't care for the cool greens so far.

      Mix in some orange (or yellow and touch of red) or yellow ochre and you will have lovely, rich earthy greens.

    I really want to get a metal pallette but the paint reacts a bit different on them compared to plastic ones, do you have any metals ones?

    I'm probably a bit late, but watercolors hate layering on alcohol markers! that might be the reason why the white didn't show up well on the swatch

    what was the name of the round watercolor palette you mentioned. I have tried so many and still not happy with mine.
