    In my humble opinion : The surface go was never meant to be a workhorse. It's a surface pro on a diet, made for people who just have basic needs and absolute mobility.

      Its effectively a Surface 4 as far as I can see.

      Landry Sibomana agree despite the super fast wake up times of all the surface devices, in an airport you wouldn't really want to open your SB2 15', probably just take out your surface Go to answer emails and do quick word or ppt or excel edits.

      i agree its absolute for mobility and too small of a screen to be my daily driver so I return it.

      Bought one and didn't think I'd like it, but is has exceeded all expectations even being lower specced than my laptop.
      I take it everywhere and take advantage of the SIM card slot for its own connection ability.
      I was looking at the Surface Pro 6 but it doesn't have SIM card slot or USB-C so happy with the "lower" version.

    You do like the most detailed reviews around. You get into the nitty gritty on specs and performance in a way that few others do, pretty much every time.
    Good stuff.

      I somehow resisted the SB with Performance Base and stuck with the maxed-out SB1. But finally I crumbled and got the SB2 15" with 16GB RAM, 256GB RAM, GTX 1060. It's SSSSSSSMOKIN'! The fact that I got it for £2k brand new and sealed was the thing that broke my resistance. A rich student had bought 5 with his student discount and passed most of that discount on.

    Thank you for making no-nonsense, no clickbait title, detailed reviews of tech products. Keep up the great work Lisa!
    As for the product itself, I think it's perfect as a secondary device. I just bought one (8GB memory, 128 GB SSD) to take on the plane, go on vacation, or just use on the sofa with.

    Picked up the base model for my casual user girlfriend. It's certainly not as slow as all the TH-camrs are claiming it is or any reviewers for that matter. Nobody is actually reviewing it! This is a casual device and I have feeling that's gonna be the volume seller.

    • @vsaagarcia89
      @vsaagarcia89 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      S Bludger can you please define casual? I'm contemplating on buying it as a second computer since my first one is in a desktop set up.

    • @kingdingaling781
      @kingdingaling781 6 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      Well casuals don't sub to tech channels like this for one. They may look up a review here though. They have no idea what specs mean. They typically have iPhones only because that's what is popular. They just want to do simple tasks on the computer and not think twice about how powerful it is or fast it is. They only notice when it gets really bad!

    • @RealityIsTheNow
      @RealityIsTheNow 6 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      It's casual in the sense that you probably won't try to design a space shuttle on it.

    • @thombergstrom9740
      @thombergstrom9740 6 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      Agree. "Casual" meaning use of Word and Excel, email, TH-cam, Netflix, Hulu, calendar, note taking, sketching, music/streaming, basic photography editing and similar activities. I actually went to the Microsoft Store nearby and tried it. I was skeptical before trying it out. Afterwards, I must say, it really is quite good and useful. It's better than what the specifications lead one to believe. My 2cents.

      Vanessa Ann Garcia as someone who used it, the Pentium Y is pretty snappy for Office use, web browsing, watching video, even 4k Netflix, and listening to music. If you do this the Surface Go will be fine for you. If you edit videos, like to do a ton of things at once, the Go will get bogged down.

    Had to comment, even though this is an older review -- I have now been using my 8gb Surface Go for a couple of months and I'm still in love. I had the SP3 previously (for a work tester) and already knew that I loved the keyboard, the pen and the removable keyboard, so when this one came out in a size that really made it functional for me, I grabbed it. I have had an iPad Pro (and thought the pencil was mostly unusable because it didn't work with most of the applications I used -- mostly Windows products and the keyboard was vinyl and felt cheap). I also have a Samsung tablet with a bluetooth keyboard but I really hate the way bluetooth keyboards don't connect immediately and my typing (and train of thought) get thrown off. I use the Surface Go as a tablet to read on at night; as a note-taking device (especially to comment on docs and powerpoints) and for general media consumption and writing. I realize it's not for everyone, but I'm sure glad they made it :)

    This is almost perfect... I am not an artist I dont need photoshop, I dont need a 16 stroke brush... I am an engineer and I want a tiny tablet that i can markup construction prints, remote whiteboard, and take notes... if I want power I know I'll never get it in this size... that is what my surface book is for... but the surface book without the base doesn't last very long at all and I cant charge it off of a pocketable battery bank. The two concerns that I have to be able to call this the absolute perfect device is battery life and LTE. I may be happy with the battery life but without LTE I just won't buy it. As soon as it has LTE support I will be purchasing it... maybe even without the tmobile band 71 support. And no android and apple dont work for that as drawboardPDF is by far the best mobile pdf markup solution. Android doesn't have one worth talking about and apple has bluebeam which is tolerable but I hate that I dont have a built in eraser on the pencil (which is an apple problem not q bluebeam one)... there is my rant for the day. I wish you reviewers would focus on what the pen can do for a majority and not the one group (artists) which is a actually pretty small group. Students, office rats, construction crews, teachers, and quite a few other people could use the pen in everyday situations to cut down on paper use.

    this looks like the device i will be using at home on the couch and for quick notes during meetings when i can not be bothered to unplug my company laptop. i do not expect it to be blazing fast but from what i hear it runs office totally fine and even is ok in multitasking with a bunch of apps open as long as you go for the 8gb model with a real ssd.
    media consumption is a no brainer and since the only other things i do require a linux based shell, and a couple of administrative tools (AD management, VMware console, ldapadmin interface, remote terminals, ilo, etc. …) this will be more than adequate to do the job.
    it is small, it is high quality and it runs windows. chromebooks are useless toys in my opinioin and ipads, while good quality, also lack the ability to run windows software i need and work as a stand in for my pc in a pinch.
    this thing can do everyhting. price is a bit high with the peripherals in the package, but thats what sales are for. i am pretty sure there will be a back to school promotion within the next 2-3 months.

    As to Win 10 as a "tablet" -- for me, the issue isn't the OS itself. I can navigate around the OS really well with touch. The problem is that a ton of applications are oblivious to touch, let alone multi-touch. Applications that use touch well (Bitwig and StaffPad are two fantastic music apps I use a lot) are wonderful as true touch/tablet experiences. I'm leaning to buying one -- my biggest negative is battery life so I plan to get an external battery too. Really nice review! Very helpful.

    A proper file system. Android is almost ok, but the file system on iPads is terrible. And I own a 10.5 iPad Pro that I bought to use Procreate to make a few illustrations. I tried hard to make the iPad work as a laptop replacement, but it's nowhere near ready for primetime.

      That’s too bad. Works for many, but I know what you mean. It’s not as flexible as it should be but it has the basics down: You can search for any of your files, make folders, combine with gdrive, Dropbox or OneDrive, but yeah, needs more work.
      But the iPad has a lot of advantages going for it that others value more. The apps are lacking for Android compared to IOS IMO. Battery life is better. Apple Pencil is better for artwork than android or surface pro. The iPad has a lot going for it and it’s always worth considering if you are a student.

      jo blo. You really shoudn't have to "get by" tho. Ipads are lovely devices, the hardware is pretty sound and it has good aesthetics but is let down by its OS. Untill they dump IOS it will always lag behind a true operating system...

    How much slower will the 8gb Surface Go be compared to 4gb i5 Pro 3?

    • @yamamancha
      @yamamancha 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's going to depend completely on use. If it's just light usage (web browsing, Netflix, Skype, email, shopping), the drop in specs won't matter.
      If you need office productivity involving heavy Word or Excel files, annotated PDFs, or multi-party videoconferencing, The Pro 3 is the better choice.
      The 8GB Pro 3 is pretty much a portable workstation and there not much you can't accomplish on it until you get up to video editing/rendering.

    Great video. That was a good detailed review, one of the best I've seen so far. And that's coming from watching 25+ reviews online. I just got the Surface Go (8 G/128 SSD version) and I've noticed its pretty snappy for its middling specs. Microsoft and app based programs (like Office and Edge) tend to run well, but standard windows programs (like the Chrome browser) tend to reflect the lower level specs. I would be interested to watch a follow up review to see how it holds up long term, especially the battery, since the reviews I have watched mark the battery life at anywhere from 4 to 8 hours depending on the reviewer, which is a pretty large variance.

    Honestly a cool product, I do think it is viable as your "only" computer for MOST mainstream users. However, waiting till black Friday or the holidays would be wise so that price comes down. The 8gb version with the SSD is the one you want since you can't upgrade this and with the type cover that is $650, keep in mind you can get an Acer swift 3 for $700 right now with a 8th gen core i5 and a mx150 GPU.
    I think once price comes down and sales happen then this will be a great buy for people looking for a Chromebook alternative and people who consider their phone their main device (me) but like having something with a physical keyboard and mouse around. Expect used models on eBay to be an option too.

      Looking cool Joker I agree, for people who only consume multimedia, do Web browsing, emailing, office tasks/word processing, this could be the only device they need. And it can still offer a full computing experience if they want by adding a keyboard, mouse and even hooking it up to a monitor.

    I received mine last night as a "tablet" companion to my 15 inch Macbook Pro. I have not put down the Surface Go yet! My version has the 8GB of ram and it's fast. I've had MS Word, Edge, Chrome and a file sharing program open at the same time with no problems. Yes, the screen is smaller and the keyboard is lighter but it just WORKS. I thinking about getting a Surface Pro and ditching Macbook altogether.

    Thanks for this excellent review. This is the secondary device I have been waiting for. I have used the Surface Book (1TB of storage) as my primary computer since 2016 and am very satisfied. have tried both iPads and Samsung Tab S3 as a secondary device for both content and basic productivity, but both fail because of the limitations in the operating systems. Finally in the 128GB Surface Go (with MSFT keyboard) I have a device that functions well as as the iPad and T3 a tablet for consuming content and for portability, but works very well as a basic productivity device once I switched to W10 Home (I had the staff at the Microsoft Store do this for me at the time of purchase). I use my QNAP NAS to sync up key files through QSync (instantaneous, quite amazing), and added a 256GB micro SD for my photos and music, leaving plenty of room on the native 128GB drive. Total success when taken to my first business meeting as my lone device (in addition to a Note 8 phone), as the company's tech guy was able to connect wirelessly to their video display system and I was able to deliver a large PPT presentation easily and without any lag. This unit is cheap enough so that I will replace it with the inevitable upgrades in RAM and storage in a year or so, and this unit will then replace the ancient MacBook pro in the kitchen. In the meantime, this is my go-to device to take on business trips and for personal travel because it is highly functional, weighs nothing, and is a pleasure to use.

      On the whole, I'm loving it. It is perfect for my use-case, which is a secondary device for me to carry around at home or when travelling. At home, I have a dedicated gaming desktop, but I also use the Go stream games while in bed using Steam, it works perfectly. I also travel for my job, and on work trips I have to bring my work laptop. Before the Go, I either have to lug around my personal laptop on these trips (2 15 inch laptops in carry on is not ideal) or resign to using an Nvidia Shield Tablet for my own personal use. The Go is the perfect size and weight to bring as a secondary device on these trips, while retaining full laptop functionalities. I can play older PC games on the go, such as Heroes of Might and Magic III, Never Winter Nights etc., which I consider to be vastly superior to any of the mobile offerings. Admittedly, as a pure tablet, it is nowhere near as polished as an iPad, which I also have in the household. For example, the Flipboard app on Windows just plain sucks (it lags, and doesn't sync properly). But I gladly the benefit you gain in increased functionality for me is worth it 10 times over.

My only gripe with the surface go is the lackluster cpu but then again in that form factor and considering all the really good features it has (thorough some may not like then) it is a very cool/unique product. Won’t fit everyone’s purpose but there are some people who will definitely love this thing.

    Thank you for your honest and technically explained reviews. I am expecting to have to replace my current laptop. I'm salivating over the Surface Pros, but a little pricey. Saw this one and expected it would not be what I wanted. I've noted computer prices overall have increased a great deal. I've had Toshiba's forever, but they don't make them anymore. I got an HP on my last one, for cheap, and do not like it at all. I'm going to look at all your reviews to help me decide what way to go. Thank you, Lisa!

    I'm thinking of buying it for taking notes at school and so I can use this instead of paper copy books (i would use this so i don't have to take with me all my copybooks that weighs a lot and i can also save some paper which is always good) . The only thing is that i really don't know if my teachers would allow me to use it instead of normal copy books. I know that at university you can use your own computer, but i have two more years at high school. I will ask them when school starts before buying it but i think I'll get a bad response :/

    First off GREAT REVIEW as usual. In my opinion this device is for the business exec who travels a lot or the casual user who will only watch movies, shows and spend a lot of time of social media. So I think it will serve it's purpose. Also I believe the Surface go is for people who want to look important or trendy walking around with their tiny Tablet instead of carrying a full size laptop around.

    Not a good primary computer for a power user. More than adequate for most people. And a great little tablet with pen support to boot. I'm primarily a Mac/iOS user and I have to say I absolutely love this little tablet computer, including the USB-C port that is non-existent on other Surface products like the just-released Surface Pro 6. Really can't say enough good things about it. Be warned though, like other Surface tablets, you won't realize its full potential without shelling out the bucks for the keyboard and Surface Pen. More than worth it though. Thanks for the review, Lisa. Love your work.

    Got the 4gb version and it's fantastic all you reviewers r all the same quick to dismiss entry level models. For the normal user they won't b able to see a difference between 4 and 8gb performance wise. In regards to the storage emmc is not as bad as everyone on here makes out it's a lot better than HDD drives for instance and as a photographer I find it good enough at loading up raw files for editing on my 4gb go people simply need to stop getting sucked into what reviewers r saying as a lot r paid to give good reviews to certain products ie there is a lot of biased reviewers out there who favour and promote certain brand names

    I don't know how familiar you are with custom mechanical keyboards, but there's something called an ortholinear keyboard where all keys are in a grid. These are often very, very small, and portable. Something like the surface go or pro lines are nice because you can use your own special keyboard instead of a normal staggered one, and don't need to waste space and money on it. Cost maybe the same as well.
    So don't assume the type cover is necessary!

    • @andyH_England
      @andyH_England 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Noah T just explaining the limits of use, a lot of “sponsored”TH-cam reviews gloss over all that and users get a nasty surprise when they try to do anything half intensive on this slow Pentium SOC. This is really not a laptop replacement as it is already using a chip that is coming up to its second birthday and is not a future proof device. MS have created a not so cheap device that is slow and restricted when Apple are about to release 7nm high performance ipad Pros that will make the GO look second rate and only cost a fraction more! Of course there is a loyal windows fan base that will comment on these reviews on how wonderful this is, the same people that probably raved that the Windows RT devices would kill off the iPads as iPads don’t run a desktop OS. Well they made the same mistake as MS, there are hundreds of millions of consumers who don’t need the desktop OS and even if they did they wouldn’t buy the GO. MS keep trying but keep making the same mistakes, performance is what matters, not being versatile, as most iPad users have them as complementary to their laptops so they have the convenience and the best of both worlds. mS continue to go on their merry way, the Frankenstein route of trying to make windows desktop work on mobile and laptop, despite every sane person knowing that starting from scratch and building a mobile OS then doing what Apple will do in 2020 making all apps cross platform without destroying MacOS. Windows fans will keep rattling on that the iPad is crap because it doesn’t do that yet they do not see the bigger picture and the story continues, laptop sales continue to decline and Apple becomes the first Trillion Dollar company! Weird that!

    • @JohnSmith-gb8hd
      @JohnSmith-gb8hd 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Indeed, this review is unfair wrt comparisons to iPads and Android tablets.
      First, she recommends unlocking Windows 10 S mode to full mode. Also incorrectly states that S mode is more for schools and companies.
      Then installs heavy bloated apps like Photoshop and Chrome on it (basically asking for performance issues), and then complains that it will bog down, and that iPads and Android tablets rarely suffer from this, which is absolutely not true. She could also educate her users about UWP regarding resource usage. Also why doesn't she use something better optimized for painting when using heavy brushes, like Paintstorm Studio, Leonardo, Affinity Photo?
      Then she incorrectly equates the Office experience of iPads and Android tablets as equal to Windows, and that regarding other use-cases they can do most of the same things, which is also not true. Also on the Surface Go you have the choice of using Office Mobile, that gives you the similar benefits regarding resource consumption, due to them being UWP apps.
      She also mentions that they have the advantage of not having to deal with viruses, unlike Windows. Then why doesn't she educate her viewers properly what S mode is really about, instead of recommending everybody to immediately unlock it. And even without S mode, getting infected is harder than it used to be back in the days.
      Also her pen review was lousy as usual, since this Surface Go suffers from the same touching metal while palm rests on screen, offset issue as the Surface Pro 2017 and Surface Book 2.

      John Smith I think your review of Lisa's review somewhat negative. Lisa is an artist and a photographer, it makes sense for her to evaluate relevant software on computers she tries. I think Adobe does have (versions of) Lightroom and Photoshop for tablets.
      I would have liked an evaluation of Capture One on it, I have been looking for an affordable portable computer to run Capture One for tethered shooting. The Surface Book is too big.

    • @RayFaye
      @RayFaye 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      because it has a pen and Photoshop is one of the things that come to mind when people see a pen. she's simply testing this device to the limits. people who want it for Photoshop will look elsewhere, people who don't need it won't care

    • @JohnSmith-gb8hd
      @JohnSmith-gb8hd 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Photoshop is actually not that touch & pen friendly, it's implemented as an afterthought and it's also a resource hog no matter what. And as I already said, there are much better alternatives out there for painting with the pen. She is too obsessed with Photoshop, while most artists have moved on from it. She also did a misleading pen latency comparison in iPad Pro vs Surface Pro comparison, using Photoshop, which is known to lag.

    TBH Office Suite on Android and iOS is a joke compared to the Windows counter part and talking about the CPU being slow is very relative for the work it's doing. I don't think it's slow for surfing the web, using Office Suite, watching videos etc. Who buys a Surface Go to run the full Adobe Suite or Advance drawing softwares, let's base our judgement on specs.

    I think this isn't meant to be use for anykind of heavy software like the Adobre Suite, SolidWorks, Inventor, hardcore gaming… So it shouldn't be measure by those standards.
    I mean, sure, you could try to do some ligh work on photoshop but that's just missing the point.
    That chip is just enough for the mobile user that is going to consume media, do email, take notes, read PDFs and ebooks, use office apps, browse the web. Yes pretty much like a tablet but with the advantage being that it could run a full fledge version of most Windows software if necessary (95% of the time you won't need full fledge desktop applications but it you need them you can have'em). It also has a far better File System and the kickstand is very very useful. The integration with the keyboard is better and it comes with a minitrackpad, backlit and a cool look. The desing has alot going for it.
    Ofcourse, the iPad has better battery life and iOS is going to feels more snappy but it will be a limiting factor in certain situations.

  • @otakarlibal
    @otakarlibal 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I was ready to hate it for it being the "crappy surface", but if I was thinking about getting an ipad or an android tablet, I would clearly go with the surface go. Simply because you have trackpad so you can use web applications that require a mouse, like website building tools, crm tools and so on. Also the ability to actually play games like cs go or run full version of photoshop and so on is great! The surface go really seems like an iPad for adults to me...

    • @knothyself347
      @knothyself347 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Otakar Libal, get it you will not be disappointed. I am an experienced and qualified IT person, and I use all kinds and types of devices, and this one is really good. I have been using the base model with pen and keyboard in S mode as my main device for three days, and the Surface Go was an expected surprise. Sure, it does not have the full function of a PC, but neither does an iPad, Android tablet, or a budget laptop, but it functions wonderfully well for what it is...a companion device. In fact I will be making a recommendation to a company purchase several of these along with iPads for their project. I hope you get one!
