  • Simulators are a great way to learn to fly for the very first time or for more seasoned pilots to progress their skills and try new models. Horizon Hobby just released the latest version of their tried-and-true RC flight simulator RealFlight 9.5S. It comes in two options - one with a USB controller, or the download version only. In this video, I walk through how to install it, different controller options, and game play.
    RealFlight is only available on PC at the moment. Thanks to Horizon Hobby for providing this product for review on my channel. Views are my own.

    Here's the latest edition of RealFlight: bit.ly/3El5ApO
    For those looking to run this on a Mac - someone said "You can run Real Flight on a Mac using Apple’s Boot Camp. I’ve done it on my MacBook Pro."

    Highly recommend this sim or upgrade. This is a great tool no matter if you are a beginner or an experienced Pilot. As you progress you can adjust the sim to hone your skills. Plus you can try many new tricks, crash, and hit the reset button without the loss of your real plane. However, get out a fly the real deal when you can. Love this hobby. Good time to be in it now with all the new tech out there to make it easy to
    learn. 👍😉

    My first experience flying CP helis in Real Flight I was convinced the sim was broken. No way it could be that difficult. Well, turns out the sim is easier as it doesn't cost you when you crash so you don't get the rattled nerves of flying a real one. Helis are crazy difficult at first but an absolute blast and adrenaline kick once you get the hang of it. Keep at it RC Girl!

      Real Flight will definitely save ya a ton of money while learning helicopters. I really master everything on the sim before bringing it outside.
      Yep, helis are brain bending at first.

      CP helos are a whole other world. When I started in it I was told the most accurate analogy I've ever heard.
      "Flying a CP helo is like holding a 12" circle of glass on the palm of your hand. Place a glass marble in the center of the glass. Roll that marble all over the glass without it falling off and purposely stop it in exact places on the glass, only by rolling and rocking your hand. You simulate landing it... bring the marble back to and stop it exactly in the center of the glass."
      They're tough!!! But it just 'clicks' eventually. Controls become second nature. But unless you have many thousands of dollars to burn... highly suggest many many hours of simulation.
      So much more fun than planes though!!!

    Crazy how when you look for answers and knowledge and you are drawn to the answers! As you see from my name I mix commands, kill throttle when I want to add, nose down when I want to climb, call me Crash! I've been using free simulators since I saw one of your videos speaking about them. It helps with the orientation when the plane is coming towards you as opposed to going away. I'm still making the mistakes more than I like, but it's less painful on the screen than in the field! Going to go check the field, will post, stay tuned, thank you.

    Two thumbs up on the Trojan. I have the original from back in 2008 (red and white) and basically the same plane though it was the Parkzone model from Horizon. I've decided to get back into the hobby and brought it back out and cleaned it up. Had to replace one wing servo and the nose gear mount. I hope to put it back up within the next few days. It was my first 4 channel and always has had a special place in my collection. I'm still using RF 4.5 if that tells you anything. Thanks for the vid!

    I purchased Realflight Evo yesterday, and am overall pretty pleased with it. I also have Accurc, which is good, but I wanted something that included Horizon models as I am a pretty big fan of them. Works fine with my modest laptop. One thing I will mention, some folks may be put off by having to access it through Steam. Actually once you are familiar with it, it is pretty nice. You do not have to be connected to the internet to run RF once it is installed. I have a couple of different options for controllers, but I wish the new controllers were a little cheaper. I really don't like using my transmitters as controllers. I have an old Efly 4 channel controller that is pretty good, but you have to use the keyboard shortcuts for channels 5-9. Nice video, as always.

    I also run Real Flight on my iMac. Like the other person who commented, I also started out using Bootcamp with Real Flight a number of years ago which was pretty solid, but I recently upgraded to a newer faster iMac and chose not to use Bootcamp. Instead I installed Parallels and then run Windows on top of that, which runs great "and" I can switch back and forth between Mac and Windows on the fly.

    I have enjoyed your videos, and I am glad you are happy with this program. Unfortunately, my experience has been quite different. I didn't have a PC, so I looked at other Sims. Ending up downloading Aerofly 9RC for my M1 Mac. Aerofly is outstanding. I still wanted to practice on the Eflight models I owned, so I bought a used PC (pretty fast one) and downloaded RF Evolution. I am very disappointed that RF does not include many of HH best selling planes. Having said that, when I run these two programs side by the side, the difference is beyond description. The AF sim is in a different league entirely. It is a VASTLY superior program in every way. Superior graphics, smoother operation, user interface, flight physics etc. I only point this out because it might be of some value to any of your readers if they are Mac users, or are just interested in exploring other sim options. BTW, I used your ideas to build a model plane rack out of PVC. Way to go! Very smart. Dale.

    Perfect timing on the video. Just yesterday I was thinking how I need this. The other day I was at my LHS and I was like...is this working? (pointing at the simulator) The kid was like...Ya. And set me up. Oh man did I crash A LOT!!!!! A LOT LOT LOT. It was set up with a hard plane. Then he set me up with a beginner plane and I was able to crash less. LOL Either way. I plan to get it eventually because I really want a plane but really don't want to kill it my first day. HAHAHA Thanks for this!!!

      If you have a local flying club you can also check with them. They might have a flying instructor. I am a flight instructor for my club. Most transmitters have the patch chord option. You can learn to fly real time and have the safety of another guy that can take control and save your plane. It's instant, no need to pass the contoller over, instructor just flips a switch on his transmitter. That being said, I just bought this software as to learn more 3D moves without the crashes.

    I started out with RealFlight Drone with the Interlink controller. At that time they didn't have drones in RealFlight. Then they added drones in I think RealFlight 6.0. Then I upgraded a few times up to 7.5. Mostly I use it for practicing things like Orbiting objects, and for keeping my controller touch during the off months when I can't fly my drones outdoors. I have never used the built in Orbit mode or other autonomous modes in my DJI drones because I prefer to do them manually. Because I have so many hours in practicing in RealFlight I feel very confident with my skills and always disable object avoidance and stuff on my real drones.

    Very good intoduction to the simulator. I am a complete novice in model aircraft and my son is too, so I went straight out and bought this.
    Now I'm being humiliated by my son, as he immediately grasped how to control the aircrafts, while I was struggling very much. Turns out that playing a lot of games, gives you an edge! Hrrmmpf. I'm genuinely amazed at his skills. 😀
    But how realistic is the simulator would you say? Is it much different from flying the models live?

    The models always look better in a TH-cam window than they do in my desktop full screen. That is even with a higher end video card and processor.
    When connecting a DX / NX transmitter does it use all the setups (rates, expo, throttle curves, etc) for the current model selected on the transmitter or does it act as a generic controller with any setups done within RF?

After plugging it into the wall, and plugging the USB lead into your USB port on your laptop or computer, then plug your controller into the Powered USB port. Yahoo, it works. $21 inconvenience. Pros and Cons? The older system I had, I sold after a year or so. If I understand you can't resell it? Or can not even put on another pc that I have? Why do some not like steam? But prefer the disc. Thinking about getting 9.5s or 9.5 version

    • @Thunderfoil
      @Thunderfoil ปีที่แล้ว

      If you have a Steam account, you can download 9.5 to any PC or laptop that you have and own. I guess that kills reselling to someone else.

  • @Dawgsofwinter
    @Dawgsofwinter 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have 9.5 and I like it but I miss the stall characteristics and the ability to practice one engine out ability the old Phoenix program had. Yes you can do engine out in this but unless I'm missing a setting it is VERY forgiving and wont yank you over into a flat spin if you aren't careful. In fact when I was doing it on a couple of the different twins I couldn't even convince it to stall spin the plane.
    All in all though still a decent program for stick time when its barely above 0 F outside or you need some practice on a new plane or want to learn something new without paying to fix things repeatedly.

    Even though you save that $99 quickly in some ways of calculating it, it still a bit steep if you also need to buy separate hardware to connect your old spektrum controller. Phoenix-RC still runs but is getting dated - is it possible to use that dongle (trainer-to-USB) to connect also with Realflight?

    • @michaelramsey82
      @michaelramsey82 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To my knowledge, the Phoenix dongle is proprietary and only works with Phoenix. RealFlight can work with any USB game controller if you set it up right, although it is better to use an R/C transmitter so it matches the controls on the real thing. Having flown both, I much prefer the physics and graphics of RealFlight.

    The channels on the Interlink DX controller are marked by letters but some plane models use numbers to signify the channel to control a certain feature. How do I find out which channel number correlates with the letter? So far, I know that A=Ch.7, B=Ch.8, C=Ch.5 and D=Ch.6. What is F, G, and H? Also, what does the "I" button and sliders do? Thanks.

    I can't find an answer to my question, please help. Can you play real flight through your laptop to play on a large screen TV? How is this accomplished? Through a Chrome Cast device? Or another way? I've been using real Flight 3.0 for 12 years on an old school desktop with Win 7 and I want to step up my game with a new laptop and a RF 9.5S for Christmas. Thanks for all your videos I've seen. I've been watching since you started. ~Craig St Louis MO

      If its a windows pc try device manager and make sure your USB adapter (assuming you are using one) is detected. You might need to load a specific driver for your adapter. If you physically remove the usb adapter and then scan device manager and you will see it added and removed each time you try and this can help see if the adapter is actually being detected. After this action its just a simple action of getting your controls into trainer mode and S-FHSS for Futaba. After configuring the adapter in realflight it should be able to continue to calibrate after firstly assigning sticks and switches.

      Someone said "You can run Real Flight on a Mac using Apple’s Boot Camp. I’ve done it on my MacBook Pro." But if you want to get a dedicated PC, just look up the minimum specs for running this on HH's website and get a cheap one within those parameters. bit.ly/3El5ApO
