Thank you for speaking on this topic. I have been using the traditional oil cleansing method for about 10 years now. Which is just oil removed with a warm or hot washcloth vs removed with a cleanser. I swear by this practice for myself. At the time my concern was acne and out of everything i have tried from a topical standpoint nothing cleared up my acne more then using this method instead of cleanser. I will never go back to a cleanser no mater how gentle. I had to quit getting facials because if a cleanser is used on my skin i will break out and most of them insist on using cleanser. While i used it at the time for acne i really do believe it played a huge role in slowing down the aging process. People always think im much younger then my age and there has been no difference in the moisture content or plumpness in my skin from when i started 10 years ago. While i cant say this is definitely the reason as i do a lot of stuff i do believe its one of the biggest components. The reason from my findings that cleansers can be problematic from both an aging and acne perspective is what you talked about in this video. They are always going to disrupt the skins barrier by messing with the microbiome via having a surfactant and raising the skins ph while also overly stripping away the lipids and fatty acids needed to maintain the moisture barrier. While gentle low ph cleansers i have no doubt are better i feel they are just doing less damage not no damage. I also quit using any type of soap or cleansing wash on a majority of my body skin as well and i also swear by it being a big reason im in my early 40's and virtually never experience dry skin. Anyways i know this is long but wanted to share in case anyone finds it helpful.
Thanks for sharing this. You’re right that the skin is ultimately designed to cleanse itself and any interference can be disruptive to the microbiome. I’ve had a couple of experts make that point on the channel. The best we can do is try to find the least disruptive option that suits our skin.
Everyone provides us with the same skin care information. Nothing new is going on lately. For the ones who have been following skin care content for a while. But your channel provides us with eye opening information and usefull tips. Very happy with this video. You rock🤟🏽😎🤗
In my 50s, & have found that my skin quality looks best when I use oils to cleanse! As even 'gentle' drugstore cleansers left me looking a little inflamed. & I only thoroughly cleanse at nite, morning I simply splash water on face.
Thanks Clare, I'm a massive fan. oof you and your channel. You manage to impart science based information in such a friendly and accessible way. You look the picture of health too!
Hi, I wanted to let you know how incredibly helpful this video is. I have good skin: mature but on the dry side. All of sudden my skin barrier thinned and I had dry flaky patches, irritation and red marks. I put it down to acute stress due to family bereavement. Uggh! Anyway, what has made THE biggest difference almost immediately was swapping my existing balm cleansers to Harborist. I cannot praise it enough. It's totally, totally wonderful and all its claims are true. Thank you
I appreciate the comment before me! I agree, cleanse with a natural oil (I love sesame, or, coconut or almond oils) then use a natural watered down toner. Your skin will be clean & glowing. I’m 53 and it’s taken me a long time to realise simple is best approach
I also like The Ordinary Squalane cleanser. It would be useful to know which products are cruelty free too. I won’t use anything tested on animals. Your skin is looking absolutely fabulous Clare. So whatever you’re doing obviously works! And maybe a bit of good genes too seeing as your mum’s skin is also great. 😊
Thank you for the skin compliment! True Botanicals, Beauty Bay, Inkey List and Harborist are not tested on animals. There is a ban on animal testing on beauty/cosmetic products in the UK and EU which makes it easier when you're looking at British or wider European brands. You'll probably be aware that with Aveeno they don't test on animals but it is sold in some countries where animal testing is mandatory.
Thank you Clare. Since your video (posted some time ago) featuring a dermatologist who advised cleansing with only water, this is what I do now!! Mostly I use water wipes and then rinse with water and a microfibre cloth. It seems to work well for me. Previous to this I'd always used an oil based cleanser or balm anyway, sometimes just plain olive oil and that worked well too. I avoid most cleansers now but twice a week I use Lira Enzymatic Cleanser (from a local salon) and it's amazing to gently exfoliate ♥ Aveeno oat serum is so good for irritated skin
I'm kind of kicking myself that I forgot to mention just using water as another option. I often just use water to rinse my face in the shower first thing in the morning - particularly if I'm not washing my hair. I tend to need the cleansing balm in the evening to break down my mascara etc. Thanks for sharing this!
I love this channel-thank you. You always look so radiant ...I am 59 and have done facial exercises for many years (-on and off) and lately I regularly do self facial massages. Have you done any "honest' research into either please?..there are as usual conflicting opinions.
So glad you enjoy the channel! I'm a big believer in facial massage (I use a roller). There are very limited trials looking at the effects of massage on the skin, but I discuss it from about 30 seconds into this video th-cam.com/video/bSD93qE9fIo/w-d-xo.html
@@thehonestchannel thank you so much for your reply..I am a bit confused whether i can do facial exercise and massage...as massage de-spasms the muscles smoothing out the skin...and wondering whether facial exercise make them spasm
Thank you for another great video Clare. Recently started using cleansing balms, the Geek & Gorgeous Might Melt is great but based on reviews, I tried Junoco Clean 10 - just love it!
If I double cleanse, I usually use Korean or Japanese balms and oils. I like the experience of massaging them onto my face. I usually do follow up with a second cleanser. I am not a fan of that aveeno face cleanser. I didn't think it did much cleansing at all.
Thank you so much. Hopefully some of the other options might be helpful for you. I’ve interviewed a couple of skin experts who believe water alone is a sufficient cleanser. I often just rinse my face in the mornings.
I’ve tried it all. Cleaning oils and balms. Double cleansing. Cream, gel you name it. They all either dried me out or broke me out. Finally the thing that works for me is the Gleanser from Prequel. I actually do a double cleanse with it. I use 1/2 a pump for the first cleanse and wipe with a microfiber cloth then rinse and use another 1/2 pump massage it around well and rinse thoroughly. 🩷
I second that. Recently discovered the Gleanser by Prequel and this is the best one I've ever used. It really helps that it is formulated with a lower pH that's close to skin's pH. Most cleansers are too basic acidity wise and will dry the skin out. I really appreciate that Prequel actually specifies the pH as most other cleansers don't, though you can test it yourself.
Thank you for these excellent recommendations. My only thought is that without surfactant type cleansing, how can skincare ingredients reach deep into our skin?
Without lab studies we can’t know whether cleansing with an oil based balm (which we are cleaning off afterwards) has an impact on skincare absorption. Personally I don’t lose sleep over things like that. I just go with what my skin responds best to. Over cleansing is a bigger issue.
Thanks Clare, I always enjoy your videos. Theoretically, I know i should use a cleansing balm but I find they leave a slight residue on the skin. Rob from Mad About Skin recommended the Harborist Cleanser which you also mentioned. Does it rinse clean away?
So glad you enjoy my content! Balms aren’t for everyone so don’t feel bad about not using one. The Harborist one is really gentle but it would leave a residue if just rinsed with water so that’s why I go over my face twice with a clean cloth. Doing that my skin feels clean.
I was thinking about doing something on the new crop of 'super antioxidants' including glutathione so I should be able to fit that in before the end of the year. Thanks for the suggestion.

Get a bottle of good quality Sunflower oil (I like Flora organic sfl oil), use it to clean up the skin, then a bottle of mineral water plus ACV (apple cider vinegar) in a half to half ratio (or less, depending on the sensitivity of your skin) to wipe over your cleaned skin to restore ph. Glowing, clean skin without too much chemicals and very light on your wallet 😉

Thank you for watching! I can see that applying an oil before using microcurrent would be counter productive but when you’re thoroughly washing the oil balm off I can’t see that being a major issue. There is no alternative for me. My skin is just so much better hydrated using the balms and I prioritize skin hydration over everything.
So you dont do a double cleanse? When I use an oil balm I tend to then wash my face with a regular cleanser. I guess I am defeating the purpose. But leaving all that oil on the skin feels like it is blocking my pores. With Micellar water do you use water? thanks so much
I don’t use any other cleanser than the balm but I do find going over it twice with a cloth leaves your skin clean. Most people use cotton pads to apply micellar water but you could rinse your skin with tap water after if you prefer that feeling. Hope that helps.

As a 54 year-old, just entering menopause, whose face was damaged by professional microneedling, I am now in a complicated heartbreaking situation with my neck and face. Thank you! I have sensitive skin that’s prone to dryness after cleansing. Even if I use a gentle cleanser, like the ‘Vanicream Gentle Facial Cleanser’, it will still make my skin feel dryer afterwards. So, I’m looking for an alternative cleansing method that is good for sensitive skin, and won’t cause any skin dryness. I’m considering trying a cleansing balm.
I think I got it all wrong 🫣 I use the cleansing balm as a first step, then I use a cleansing liquid soap and sometimes a toner after that as well 😂🤔 so you only use the oil based balm then? thank you for the video!
After watching this chat, I bought and used the Inkey list oat cleansing balm. I’m afraid I found it to be awful. It left my hands and my face so greasy and oily . I couldn’t get rid of it so I had to use soap to get it off. I had to use hand soap twice to really get rid of it. That was quite disappointing. Foolishly I bought 2 tubes.
Cleansing balms are oil based so I do find (as shown in the video) you have to use a hot wet face cloth to remove it and I do that twice. If you follow the method I demonstrated it should remove the balm completely while not drying out your skin.
I’ve been using a cleansing balm but even on no makeup days I’ve done a 2nd cleanse with a liquid cleanser. I thought if using any oil based cleansers whether a balm or liquid form you need to cleanse a 2nd time as the oil can prevent further skin care from being absorbed.
There may be traces of oil remaining on my skin but I find that going back over my face and neck twice with a clean face cloth certainly feels like all product is removed. No one has tested this in a skin analysis that I’m aware of so it’s pretty theoretical stuff.
When you say do it again do you mean double cleanse with the same. I have allies of skin cleaner but it does have a smell that is not fragrance . I also like goat milk cleanser and Lisa Eldridge cleanser. So no 2nd cleanser after removing makeup?
I only apply the balm once and I rub it in to break down my make-up then take everything off with a clean cloth and then I rinse the cloth with hot water and go over my skin again with it.
I really Enjoy your channel and will co to ie to watch but you lost me in this one. I agree that we want good quality cleanser that doesn’t strip the skin. But it is in our skin for a short period of time and I find it unnecessary to have a complex list of ingredients when those ingredients will be introduced elsewhere. I refuse to pay hyped up prices that are unnecessary
I agree that we don’t want to overpay for cleansers but most of the products mentioned are inexpensive and simply formulated so using a balm has saved me money, allowed me to scale back my routine and greatly helped my skin. We’re all different though so I appreciate this approach won’t suit everyone.
