I felt that his lecture opened up more questions than answers. He’s dealing with vast time periods and very different geographical and cultural places.

The earliest definitions of Democracy are illuminating ... and a sad reflection on what WE still term Democracy today ... although thankfully ... legal slavery is no longer accepted ...
But the exploitation and other issues that degraded the political system then, still exist, as we've seen recently ...
There is a redemption in the definition of 'Elites' in classical terms ...
They have a crucial place, as long as they too contribute ... I like that ...
Many lessons in this valuable lecture ... lessons for today ...

I think people living 2000 years ago probably felt the same way about how their own democracies had degraded over time.

Comparing Athenian democracy to Roman democracy is like comparing a grape to an orange

@TheCPU5555 This is the most arbitrary book that I've ever read. We are taking at Stanford's University TH-cam Channel. This means that we are here to develop scientific evidences WITH original sources. And the only guide for Ancient Times, are the Greek and Latin writers....Accept the fact that this should be a discussion in an academic environment like this one. Such books, like yours, only offer misleading information, oriented only for uneducated people....Knowledge is power my friend.....

Stanford U. ha-ha I'm retired from the construction industry and over my career I listened to a handful of craftsmen who started a business and were living from job to job, as it's tough to get a construction business thriving, unless you hit boom times. Anyhow, Stanford loves those start-up businesses because they'd contract them to do construction work, then after the work was finished, they wouldn't pay 'em. You see, the start up guys don't have the money to sue, they have to go look for work to keep their business afloat.
