In use there may have been a damp curtain hung over the entrance. At night a lamp would be lit outside the window.

Father Maximilian Hell (!) was sent to Vardo, a site about as far north as they could find. The old tradition, turfroof have a number of functional advantages. Like, it's cool inside in summer and insolating in winter. And it's soundproof. You don't hear a sound of the rain. It's also fairly maintenancefriendly.

The turf is to keep the birch bark that renders the roof watertight in place. Goats are known to feed on roofs, yes.
