A typical LoRa communication is expected to have at least several kilometers of range in open fields. I live in an area where my house is slightly raised compared to the open field next to the town so it is perfect for testing the range of such devices.
In this video, I'm playing with the Reyax RYLR993 lite module that comes with an external antenna. The module supports LoRaWAN, Helium, and the LoRa proprietary communication so it is very easy to be combined with different projects.
For testing purposes, I'm using the module in combination with the RYLR998 modules that I tested before where I have one of them as a base station placed on my balcony, and the other one and the RYLR993 modules are with me while I move through the open field.
Both of the modules performed exceptionally well and I was amazed to get some level of communication at a range of 20 kilometers!!! Check out the video for all of the details.

very nice kids. they are helping the father test the lora range
Thank you! 🤗
Fantastic results!! Thank you !
Thank you for watching!
Pure Passion!!! fantastic video. I have seen very few people doing the field tests as it takes a lot to effort and time. Thank you for the hard work. 👍
Thank you! Yes, this is so true! Just this test alone took most of the day to execute. Preparing the devices, editing and filming the rest is on top of that!
Nice job!
Thanks!
This brings back good memories. This was our reactions too doing range tests as the distance kept increasing. Keep pushing it! We're hitting over 200km now :)
Oh wow!!! What sort of modules and antennas are you using?
@kalen what tx power are you using ?
Amazing, thank you
Thank you for watching!
good experience. Well done
Thank you!
Excelent video, im going to try myself!
Cool! Let me know your results!
I live for this kind of video 😂 brilliant!
Thanks!
thanks alot 🙏
You're welcome!
Great job! I've achieved 112KM using 8bBi collinear antennas on a high ground.
Oh wow! That is huge!
VladoT, Can u share the project (112KM)
That has to be over horizon? What elevation were you on?
@@Irongrip62 I am on an 1000m (3000ft) elevation and the receiving end was almost sea level (0m). There is some hills between so its not pure line of sight for sure.
@@VladoT Tx power 22 dBm ?
nice project))
Thanks!
Hello, any idea about the maximum data rate at this distance ?
Is there a SPI version of the 993?
I was only able to periodically get a package. I don't know what the max could be.
@@TasteTheCode ok thanks 👍
😀Very attentive!
Thanks!
Does this 993 lora can handle voice or audio data ?
Nope. LoRa is only intended to be used with very small data packets like sensor data or control signals.
Great!!! can you send data from multiple devices??
Thanks! Yes you can. The devices use their addresses and network id to for a group that can talk between each other.
a mi solo me llega maximo a 1km :( sabes por qué pueda ser?
estoy usando la banda de frecuencia 868 MHz
You need to have a line of sight between the two in order to get more. As soon as something blocks the view, the range gets limited.
Can you please also tell us how to connect lora with microcontroller
, and also how to write code for LoRa transriciever
The code for the decices is in the video description. The modules I used talk to the microcontroller via serial. It quite straight forward but it depends on the modules used.
I bought rylr998 to do transparent serial link @9600 bauds. Is it Ok ?
I'm not really sure what you are trying to do...
@@TasteTheCode i am receivent from powermeter the data at 9600 bauds only one direction. the distance to the house is 60 m. I plan to use a 2nd ryrl898 to receive and decode.
I guess so... I have no idea what the power meter uses. Its too specific to know but you should be able to do it.
can you please share the full guide documentation !
It is all in the video and in the video description. All the code is also available there and in the previous video linked in the description.
nice. what's the name of the terminal app?
Thanks! The app is called Serial USB Terminal. It has a white icon with a yellow connector on it.
Can this work with an ESP8266 on Arduino IDE?
Yes but only to control the LoRa modules. In fact, I use NodeMCU in the video and I program them through the Arduino IDE.
hahhaa, he is taking the whole familly out ont a LoRa testing mission. lol
Gotta make them appreciate tech early on ;)
if such devices was back in the days of GSM then someone was getting very rich
GSM has its place. This is only good for small data packages and sensor data. It can't do any voice or streaming.
@@TasteTheCode well back in days when GSM signal was not evrywhere even sending messages in short distance in small village was like something special if was free.
Its expensive tho
It's hard to comment on the price but I'm sure it is justified.
