    Don't take this the wrong way, but your cons basically are
    "You might be incapable of handling a knife without hurting yourself and others".
    Like... If someone is too clumsy or too stupid to handle a knife without hurting themselves or others, they shouldn't have a knife in the first place.
    That's not really a con to having a diving knife.

      No I understand, I probably should have used a different word other than "con" . The idea was to give someone who might be thinking about getting a knife some stuff to think about. And yeah if someone is clumsy and can't use a knife then they probably don't need a knife. 😉 Thanks for watching and your comment.

      and they definitely shouldn't be diving in the sea!

    I always carry a sharp, pointed dive knife. That way I can be the fastest swimmer if a shark attacks...

    I never got into diving, asked a buddy if he wanted to and then we never did but that said i'd not enter the water with out at least a knife.

    I do agree with Rachel about people that tend to be to clumsy, but the problem is people buy it because they can. I also got myself a dive knife (because I could and thought it was cool) but I also have several pocket knives and multi tools around me at any given time. I had a
    Aquatec Raptor (blunt tip) and it was for more practical use. I must agree if you feel you want to be prepared then get a line cutter. But a nice dive knife can cut your steak when you out on a remote beach on a dive weekend, blunt tip can help you scavenge for stuff on the rocks, nice back end can crack open shellfish you might be having for dinner or even cut open the bag of lollipops when your fingers are freezing and to dumb to even tear plastic.
    In the end I think get one if your pocket knife (or multi tool) is withing arms reach of where you are now.

      Thanks for sharing Hurn. Definitely most of my knife uses are snack related 😂 lol

    They are VERY handy if you live in a swamp close to the ocean as my old stiletto knife rusted away and broke while my old stingray knife stood the test of time and is perfect for gutting and scaling and even throwing.....but nothing and a mean NOTHING could compare to my ole handmade stone knife though.

    A must-have for cutting bocadillos and spreading mayonnaise!

    It’s a good idea to wear a small cutting device of any kind just in case you’re entangled in fishing line or something. Big dive knifes look always a bit like compensating for something. 😉

      A bigger blade has many applications, try to pry something with a tiny blade for example.
      A larger cutting surface also makes for an easier sawing motion.

    • @leopoldbloom4835

      Rachel Purity
      Sure, hypothetically, but did you ever need a big knife in reality? I mean, in the water? Ever?

    • @rachelpurity1
      @rachelpurity1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@leopoldbloom4835 Yes, I needed to cut a rope with it.
      Had the blade been shorter, I'd been going at it for ages.
      With the longer, traditional length I could easily get a swing motion with some actual strokes going.

      Rachel Purity- Okay, I admit defeat. (Probably a first-timer in the history of TH-cam comments. 😉)

    A dive knife is a safety tool. Are not going to cut rope with that string cutting tool. Me I like the flat tip knife they are safer. And if you dive and you don’t use your knife it was a good dive. Now as a signaling thing get a tank banger it is a plastic ball on shock cord it goes around your tank and you grab the ball give it a pull and let go. And handle of a good dive knife is heavy so if you drop it it with fall handle down. The large knife with a flat tip can be used as a prying tool. And if you get stuck in a wreck you can use the knife as a hammer to signal for help or a prying tool to self rescue. But you can’t use something you don’t have. And the weight are you on drugs? You have a weight belt with weights on it just remove some weight to compensate for your gear weight like any good diver. You are a good diver right? Now a dive knife as a weapon no. Cutting anything with blood in it is not good. But if your knife is a wasp knife that is a little different but not much. Now some reefs dives is a no good on dive knives but some replacements tools are welcomed. Me I would look up the place and dive master of the site and call and check what is not welcomed on the dive.and if it is closed to outsiders too before I book a dive.

      A tank banger is so awesome, many people buy lots of them because they forget to take them off of the rental cylinder.
      If you need to bang something against your cylinder, how about something that isn't sharp? Or that you already have with you, like say, a bolt snap. Hell, you could even just use the spring gate to make noise. And please use them sparingly. Use them when you're in trouble, or you spot something truly awesome like a manta ray, a rare shark, or a whale.

    Your cons are not really convincing. I have never met any diver whom happened things like you have counted or who has ever told me things like that. If someone isn´t able to manage a knife or is clumsy he or she should simply keep his/her hands off it.

      Knives should be tailored to their uses. You don't want a massive Rambo knife or dagger. In fact, most "dive knives" are absolutely horrible. Their line cutters are shit. The serrated edges suck. The straight edges are blunt. The only sharp bit on the knife is the point, which is the only bit you don't want to be sharp.
      Cheap knives rust. Expensive knives rust. Titanium doesn't hold an edge. Ceramic blades are too brittle. Line cutters are awesome. They're cheap, have easily replaceable blades, will slice through anything (except thick rope), and they're safe.
      If you're getting a knife, get one in a steel that is extremely rust resistant, like H1, H2, or LC200N. Get one with a good serrated edge so you can cut through thick ropes. Don't wear your knife on your leg. If you need to drop your weight belt, it's likely to get caught on the knife strapped to your leg.
      Place any cutting tool in a place that you can easily reach with both hands. That is on either shoulder strap, or somewhere around your waist. Get different cutting tools for different jobs. Line cutters for cutting lines, webbing, bungees, wetsuits, etc. Serrated blades for cutting thick rope. Trauma shears for cutting through multi-layered garments or tough leather. When you're using your cutting tool, make sure you're only cutting what you're meant to be cutting. Keep your cutting edges away from hoses, bladders, and skin.

    Do you use a dive knife??

    • @bloodymarvelous4790
      @bloodymarvelous4790 ปีที่แล้ว

      Use? No. Carry? Definitely.
      I carry 4 cutting tools. Two Trilobite line cutters, one Spyderco Salt serrated folding knife, and one set of XShears, each one in a place I can easily reach with both hands.
