Star Wars: A New Hope - Revisiting The Film That Started It All

  • What can be said about Star Wars: A New Hope that hasn’t been said before? How many different times can it be stated how George Lucas’ film changed pop culture, the movie business, most of our lives, the whole works? It’s hard to think of a movie - and the franchise it spawned - that’s been picked over, analyzed, dissected more than Star Wars. And yet here we are!
So why go over such familiar territory again? Maybe it’s because the Star Wars films - and we’re talking about the original trilogy here - capture our imagination in ways no other movies can. Better movies have been made, yes, but how many of them transport us so vividly into another universe, one that’s so foreign and yet so familiar? Star Wars puts a smile on the faces of those who love it, and that’s probably why we keep revisiting it over and over again. Like a great song you can listen to on repeat, there’s just no getting tired of the things that bring joy to your heart.
This episode of Revisited is written by Eric Walkuski, edited by John Nguyen, and narrated by Shawn Knippelberg.

I absolutely love the original trilogy. When STAR WARS first arrived in theaters, I was 6 years old. I was old enough to be awed at the spectacle that is STAR WARS and young enough to want everything STAR WARS. Most of my friendships, over the years, have revolved around our mutual love for the galaxy far, far away. I am proud to call myself a "First Generation Fan. "

I was twenty-five years old when Star Wars came out. My friends and I saw it seven times. I even have the first VHS tapes of the original trilogy, and I enjoy playing them from time to time as a nostalgic antidote to the last and final extended editions. It's true, all of it. You can go home again, and Star Wars is home.

Not only is A New Hope my favorite Star Wars film, it's my all time favorite movie. There's nothing I can say that hasn't been said again and again and again about the film, from the characters, the effects, the music, or that feeling you get every time you rewatch it. No matter how many times I've seen it I still find it as thrilling as ever and I could never grow tired of it. I do enjoy some of the other films in the franchise, but A New Hope will always be the odds on favorite in my eyes

Yep same here. Its superb. Empire is fantastic. But nothing comes close to the original for the impact it had. All you can say to younger people now is, you had to be there to understand. To a younger person its always been around. But to us, there was nothing like it ....there was no big budget effects films in the sci fi fantasy genre before Star Wars. In 2023 effects movies are released all the time. Its become common place. That only came about because Star Wars proved it could be done, done well and make money and a lot of it......

I've posted this elsewhere, but having been a young teenager in 1977, it is hard to stress how influential it was. When my brothers and I first saw the opening scene, it felt as if our brains were expanding. But what I also recall is seeing the first TV commercial, which was set to Vivaldi's winter, and was just the movie name moving towards the camera interspersed with short clips. Hard to imagine, but without context it all came across as much darker, more violent, and almost sureal. As if it were, literally, about ongoing wars. I thought Chewbacca was resigning himself to die, and that there was some kind of strange existential dependency between the two robots. Also, wow, did that name "Star Wars" seem awkward to say.

I saw the original Star Wars back on 2005 on national television in Argentina. It was the special edition, at the time I didn't know it wasn't the original version, but I still was hooked on the story. I think my favorite part of the movie is actually when Luke and Obi Wan went to the cantina to find Han Solo, all the weird creatures and the fact that the music wasn't composed of weird sounds but instead was a jazz theme, I didn't expect that. Another scene that really impressed me as a pre-teen was when Luke and the others were trapped in the trash compactor, C-3P0's reaction when he thought he couldn't save then felt so natural

A long time ago in the summer of 1977, I was a 10 year old kid who, one day, walked into a movie theatre to see "some far-out space movie" that was rapidly becoming "the talk of the town" on the schoolyard playground... I walked in an innocent, naive little child, only interested in Duncan Yo-yos, Mad Libs, Marshall Brodien TV Magic Cards, & Evel Knievel toys... I walked out CHANGED FOREVER.
On that glorious day, I had seen the greatest movie that would EVER be made... STAR WARS... This groundbreaking film from creator George Lucas TOTALLY changed my life... It absolutely blew me away, filling my heart with joy, stimulating my imagination, and kick-starting my love for cinema...
That day was momentous for me, and I would never be the same again.. I will never forget it..
From the moment the 20th Century Fox fanfare and John Williams' theme blasted through the theatre speaker system, and "A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away" and that "Flash Gordon inspired" opening crawl came on the screen, and that gigantic Star Destroyer appeared, flying over my head, towering above me as I sat in my theatre seat... and kept going... and going...and going... and as the entire audience gasped with amazement... at that very moment, I was instantaneously mesmerized, transfixed, and transformed... and I was only 5 minutes into the movie... I still had 2 more hours to go!
As I sat In amazement, I was terrified by a helmeted figure in black, Darth Vader... In fact, the whole audience "booed" him as he made his entrance.. .We knew NOTHING about the story yet, but just KNEW that this guy deserved a collective "booing"!... It was like we were watching a SILENT MOVIE!... And as the movie continued, I was thrilled by the heroic exploits of the dashing smuggler Han Solo and the feisty Princess Leia, and emboldened by the brave, heroic, idealistic actions of the farm boy turned hero of the galaxy, Luke Skywalker! And by the film's spectacular climax of the rebel assault on the Death Star (the greatest ending ever committed to celluloid), my heart was pounding, and my spirit was soaring... And I will NEVER forget the standing ovation of applause that erupted as the credits rolled... Everyone in that audience didn't know it yet, but we had all just been first-hand witnesses to cinematic HISTORY!
This was NOT The Apple Dumpling Gang, Herbie Rides Again, Benji, The Bad News Bears, or any of the other 70's kiddie "dreck" that I was being subjected to at that time...
No, this was something VERY DIFFERENT...
Qf course, it wasn't ALL "dreck"... Even at that young age, I'd managed to see a small handful of very good and (for their time) very impressive big-screen spectacles in the theatre: like The Golden Voyage of Sinbad (1974), At the Earth's Core (1976), Logan's Run (1976), and King Kong (1976)...
But NOTHING could have prepared me (or the rest of the world) for the phenomenon that was STAR WARS, and the change it would bring... the film that would propel an unprepared 1970's audience far beyond their wildest film-going expectations, and revolutionize the motion picture industry FOREVER. Words can never fully describe what it was like to be alive in the summer of 1977 during the peak height of "Star Wars Mania"... except to say that it was pure MAGIC.
I will never forget the day that I went to see STAR WARS for the first time... May 25th, 1977... My father took my younger brother and me... I remember we went in my father's company truck (my brother and I rode in the bed of the truck), I remember that we stopped at Burger Chef first to have dinner, and I got one of the four SW promotional posters that they were selling there (I got the one with C-3PO and
R2-D2... the first time that I ever laid eyes on ANY characters from SW!)... I remember that the ticket line went on for what seemed like forever... I remember walking into the theatre lobby and seeing the SW lobby display... I remember my father bought us both a Hershey bar, and he got a bucket of popcorn with extra butter for us all to share... Why do I remember all this?... And when the movie was over, I remember the audience erupting into insane thunderous cheers and applause that I had never experienced before! Naturally, my brother loved the movie, too... but the amazing thing was that even my father (who probably just thought he was taking his children to see some "dumb kid's film") was crazy about it as well!... My mother didn't go that night, and she always regretted it... She told me much later in life that if she had known that it was to be such an important moment in my life, she would have loved to experience my VERY FIRST viewing of SW!... Of course, she did take my brother and I to see it many times after my first viewing... And she loved it too!
I became an instant fanatic... I saw the film 11 times in the movie theatre (which wasn't hard to do, as it stayed at our local theatre for an entire year!)... I sneaked my portable tape recorder into the theatre and audio-recorded the entire film so that I could listen to the adventure over and over in the comfort of my own bedroom (the ONLY way that I could relive it at home for 6 years until it finally came on TV!)... I dressed up in a make-shift Darth Vader costume for Halloween...I collected the action figures, the trading cards, the posters, the books, the model kits, and much more (and I STILL have all of that "stuff")... I listened to John Williams' Star Wars soundtrack album constantly, becoming a fan of symphonic and film score music... I watched "The Making of Star Wars" TV special, becoming fascinated by the way movies were made, even making a few myself with my Super-8 camera...
I watched the Academy Awards for the very first time to see my favorite movie sweep the Oscars
with 10 nominations and 7 wins... I even watched the now "infamous" Holiday Special (and I loved it... Lumpy... Itchy... Harvey Korman... Bea Arthur... Wookiee-ookiees... "Hey, I was 11 when it aired!").
An amusing aside: I will NEVER forget when my parents took me to the record store to get the STAR WARS soundtrack by John Williams... We were driving home, and I was in the back seat of the car, looking at the LP... "Something is WRONG here", I said to myself... Well, it turned out that my parents had accidentally purchased the MECO DISCO VERSION! ... What did they know, after all?
Obviously, we had to turn around and go back to the store!
Another amusing aside: A few years later, when STAR WARS made its TV debut on HBO in 1983, I had to ask my high school audio/video teacher to take the school VCR machine home with him to record STAR WARS for me (it's hard to believe, but there ACTUALLY was a time when that was what I had to go through to get a movie... Not too many people HAD home VCR's yet!)... And when I finally DID secure that magical video tape, my friend and I watched parts of it EVERY DAY in the school library audio/video room during our lunch hour for the ENTIRE year of 1983 (In fact, sometimes we even got to watch the ENTIRE movie in a day, as our P.E. class was right before our lunch period, and we actually BRIBED our P.E. coach with peanut butter cookies from the cafeteria so that she would let us skip class... TWO FULL HOURS to watch STAR WARS!).
And after 46 years, I continue to love STAR WARS: A NEW HOPE more and more... It has aged like fine wine... It is my #1 favorite movie of all time, followed by my 2nd favorite movie of all time: The Empire Strikes Back, and my 3rd favorite movie of all time: Return of the Jedi...These 3 movies are flawless and perfect, collectively making up not only the greatest cinematic trilogy ever made... but the three greatest films of ANY kind ever made... and the greatest cinematic story ever told... PERIOD.
PS: As a first generation STAR WARS fan, I proudly declare that... Yes... I LOVE the Prequel Trilogy films as well... absolutely... and totally stand behind them... they are amazing films, oozing with imagination and creativity... I like them just as much as the Original Trilogy... It's nice to see the positive re-evaluation of them in recent years, as they are getting much more love and respect now, after years of unwarranted hate... I consider myself lucky... because I've ALWAYS loved them...
I also LOVE the Special Editions of the Original Trilogy as well!
What a remarkable gift from Lucas those are!
They have only ENHANCED my love of the films that I grew up with as a child...
And "yes", I even like the Sequel Trilogy!
However, it all comes back to the very first 1977 film... This one is so pure and innocent... Its story is totally self-contained, without one needing to see any other Star Wars film to understand it... As summed up perfectly in the film's teaser trailer narration: "It's the story of a boy, a girl, and a universe... of rebellion and romance... of heroes, and villains, and aliens from a 1,000 worlds"... That says it alL...
It is the perfect story... the perfect film... a phenomenon... a bona fide classic.. a MASTERPIECE..
Thank you so much, George Lucas, for taking me to your galaxy far, far away... Words can never express the utter joy and happiness that your six STAR WARS films have given me.., and continue to give me to this very day... And in particular, thank you so much for that life-altering experience that you gave me when I walked into that movie theatre at 10 years old in the summer of 1977 to see "that
far-out space movie", aka: THE GREATEST MOVIE EVER MADE! ...It's odd to think a that a mere movie could have that kind of power to change one's life in such a profoundly positive way...
But I'm proof that one can.
And just think, things could have gone VERY DIFFERENTLY and HORRIBLY WRONG that glorious day if I had instead gone to see some "awful piece of dreck" that was also playing at that same time...
like Tentacles ("Yikes!")... or Viva Knievel ("Ouch!")... or Pete's Dragon ("Uhg!").

But I know I did because when "Empire" came out, I knew the characters and the story, and I know I couldn't have seen "A New Hope" by then without having had seen it at a theater. You had to be there in 1977 to fully understand why. The grim dark depressing films of pre Star Wars, things like Roller Ball and Soylent Green for example were what was being made.... And then Star Wars happened. It blew everything away. It was everywhere and no one had seen or expected the scale of success and love it achieved over night. People were going to see it every day, time and time again. No one could get enough of it. The 70s were a grim time here in England and worse for America with the Vietnam war. Star Wars was a lift, an escape from grim reality and pure entertainment that swept you away. Its nothing less than the most important and ground breaking film event of the 20th Century. Its never been equalled in influence, and sheer impact on the public.

I just can't describe the experience, Star Wars just open the gates to a new world, the kid that came out of the theater that afternoon was a different one that the one that came in, the filmed changed my life forever, that can only be accomplished with great art. I am 54 year old now, have become a bit of a cynic and my love for cinema has drifted to more "complex" and artsy fartsy stuff, but still Star Wars still brings a smile to my face and the pure and pristine excitement of youth and the joy of being part of something pretty special. Saturday, We waited 4 hours in the car sitting on the road in the San Fernando Valley only not to see it. He tried Sunday night, only to find out the Van Nuys drive in sold out during the day. I had to go to school and face my friends and other, who I had bragged to that I was going to see it over the weekend. I was teased and called a lair. Other kids who did see it told the whole story from beginning to end during lunch. I was CRUSHED.
On Friday, 3-June-1977 my father picked me up (on his non-visit weekend) from school at 330pm from Hubbard Elm in Sylmar CA. We drove to the Americana Movie Theater on Van Nuys Boulevard, Panorama City, CA. and saw Star Wars on my birthday. Then we went to Farrell's Ice Cream Parlor on Canoga Ave in Woodland Hills for the Birthday party dinner my mother had planned with my cousins, grandparents, and friends.
I Will be 53 this year, I have to say I have NOT had a better Birthday Day since I was 7!

The Movie that made me the nerd i am today, loved the magic as a kid, got beaten up by class mates for simply loving this and have the action figures en we speak end 70's early 80's when nerd culture was not what it is today. New Hope and Empire Strikes Back (wich i saw in the theater on release) are always my favorite Star Wars movies that i can watch over and over again. Also saw the og trilogy 'remasters' in the theaters when it came out in the 90's.

I was 10 years old in 1977 when I first saw Star Wars in a movie theater on its first release. Perhaps the perfect age. Like pretty much everyone else, I was blown away by it. I still am to this day. I begged my mom to by me the official booklet that was for sale in the foyer. I wish I'd kept it because it would be worth a fortune today!

I was five years old when I first saw the original Star Wars on VHS, and I loved it. Its been almost four decades since then, and A New Hope remains one of my favorite films, ever. George Lucas took plenty of personal and professional risks when he made this movie, but it all paid off extremely well, and fans like me are very grateful.

You overlooked the amazing contributions of Ben Burt, Sound Designer. He invented, arguably, the most iconic sounds in film history: Darth Vader's breathing, blaster fire, R2-D2s boops and beeps, and the most iconic of all, the snap-hiss of the lightsaber.

      @Simon-xc5oy ปีที่แล้ว +2

Heh...I loved the Rescuers...it was the first cartoon film I ever saw and the first Disney film I ever saw at the Cinema. Its incredible to think it was around at the same time. My cinema had posters and a behind the scenes book for sale in the foyer that advertised Star Wars. We got the book as it looked really interesting. The Sandcrawler and Jawas were there in the front and it looked real, and not like it was a model or effects, my father was impressed by it. And a couple of weeks later when it came out was the first one to suggest we went to see it. I was six years old, coming up seven and I had no idea what I was going to see, or how it would change my life, view of the world and awaken a love of film and sci fi that I still have today.....

    • @leespiderpod
      @leespiderpod ปีที่แล้ว

@@Simon-xc5oy I agree, The Rescuers is a great movie and I enjoyed watching it but I do remember the place was full of adults chain smoking, lol. I did get to see Empire & Return of the Jedi later on.
We are a similar age so having those films around us at an early age couldn't of been timed better for 70s & 80s kids. Great times!

    So where are the engines?

    • @barbiquearea

The Death Star is the size of a small moon. I'm pretty sure the engines are placed all over the back. We just can't see them due to the scale of the whole structure. Its like how you can't see the pyramids from outer space, despite them being huge.

The editor for this movie doesn’t get talked about nearly enough. Lucas shot so much film and it was very without direction at times as he tried to get far too detailed about the world at large at times and by doing so got lost in the weeds a lot, his wife sifted through so many hours of film and spliced together the final product in one of the most masterful strokes of editorial manipulation in cinema history. She truly was the unsung hero of the series and did the first 3 movies but if I remember correctly had passed away before the prequels or maybe just didn’t want to do them, idk but I don’t think she did anything but the original trilogy and she was just as big a part of what that movie became and it not being as big a joke as John Travolta’s sic fi movie by really sifting through a lot of practically junk to find the movie in there

Star Wars managed to avoid the pitfalls of the sci-fi/fantasy films before it. Filming on location, highly detailed models and paintings were critical to giving it that feeling of reality. But key to Star Wars was making believable characters central to the movie, the triangle of Han, Leia and Luke was so strong that any effects that weren't particularly great you tended to just ignore. The cinematography and the musical score are, of course, brilliant. Star Wars has aged though, and as much as George Lucas tried to update it several times, it is a movie of its time. Not that that really matters, it just makes it more nostalgic and takes us back to when we were young. I do prefer the 1977 despecialized.

yeah, whenever I see the original 1977 SW, I am still sad (and a bit angry) that they made the sequel trilogy into such a bad reboot of the original. The originals had so many good aspects that my perception and enjoyment changed over the years. As a kid, I liked the heroes, lightsabers, and space ships. As an adult, I truly enjoy the story and the characters. That's what made the originals such great movies.

"A New Hope"? I saw "Star Wars" (1977) in the same ex-Cinerama theater that had screened "2001: A Space Odyssey" (1968) and would show "Alien" (1979). The Prequel Trilogy "was for kids," but "Weird Al" Yankovic summed it up in under 5 minutes with "The Saga Begins." Then Rat City got it's pawns on it, and Sith Queen KK of Lucasfilm turned the golden goose into roadkill in half the time it took to establish the series. From Light to Dark like Darth Vader's Dark Side Choke.

Although my memory of it is limited to probably the first ten minutes of the film because of my young age of about 2yrs. old, therefore I'm sure I fell asleep, I do remember being at the drive-in with my parents to see "Star Wars" the year it came out.
One of the greatest legacies to come from "A New Hope" besides the sequels and beyond, is ILM (Industrial Light & Magic). ILM redefined special effects in general as well as specifically, i.e., without ILM there is no surreal water effect in "The Abyss," so then there's no groundbreaking effects for "T2: Judgement Day" or believable CGI dinosaurs for "Jurassic Park." As well, there would be no Pixar, the pioneer for completely computer animated films, so no "Toy Story," or "Frozen," and no outside competition from the likes of "Shrek."
Try to deny the importance of "Star Wars' " place in film history to any true believer and they'll say, "Yeup, Marvel's found film success owes a lot to "A New Hope."
