In those days, I was living in a neat multicultural neighbourhood of numerous nationalities and nearly everybody was into this event. Especially the Italians of the neighbourhood were the ones who created a great atmosphere. They went nuts each time Italy won. Us kids would be playing at the pitches in front of the neighbourhoods different apartment buildings while a game was on. Parents at the balconies would shout to us when someone scored. It was a magical atmosphere. A couple of months after this tournament i was already so nostalgic and was missing those magic weeks during the summer and wished to see the whole world cup again so i wrote a letter (as a 9 year old kid) to the Eurosport broadcast company and asked them if they could show all the Highlights again 😄 (this was before the Internet obviously) They even were kind enough to write me a letter back and informed me that they couldn't do it due to copyright restrictions. What a time that was.

Actually there was a sense . Back then the football was a way more competitive and unpredictable. Most of the teams were full of stars and either good players so the difference in the every match depended on recent form and luck . Because everyone in every team was so thirsty for victories. Nowadays like most aspects of life money decides who will win and the players not motivated . High salaries of the players made them lazy over most of tournaments like world and euro cup .
