This is definitely flawed. In real life you wouldn’t be trying to go off to the side and you wouldn’t be calling tower AFTER you crash. You would be focusing on getting yourself and everybody else off the plane.

It is the correct procedure, but people can panic and that can cause the pilots to turn to the sides. Plus, it may take some time to call tower, and before that a crash can happen. Also, he did open the emergency doors.
