Johann Valentin Meder (1649, Walsungen - 1719, Riga); German singer (tenor), composer and organist. In Leipzig he was probably a student of Sebastian Knüpfer. From 1671 he was a musician in various professional positions that took him via Gotha, Kassel, Bremen, Hamburg, Copenhagen, Lübeck (here he met Dietrich Buxtehude) and Reval to Riga. Meder considered vocal music to be the basis of his art. He left behind numerous sacred compositions, concerts, four operas and some instrumental music. Many of his works are lost.
