- How to break 90 when playing golf - You don’t have to play great or even good golf to break 90.
Every shot from Luke's round (12 handicap) of golf at Quinta Do Lago Laranjal golf course. This was filmed in during our Portugal golf trip and was a very tough test of golf

Luke makes an excellent point about the actual difficulty of breaking 90 (on most courses). I am a 52 year old who lives with a limitation in that my right leg is injured and is about half as strong as it should be. I have an artificial knee in that leg and a titanium rod in my left femur. I love to play golf but I can barely drive the ball 200 yards and yet, I routinely shoot between 85 and 90. If you keep the ball in play and develop your skills around the green (chipping and putting), there is no reason in the world why anyone shouldn't be able to achieve that score. I like to think of it this way, 5 x 9 is 45 and 5 x 18 is 90. So I play every hole as if it were a par 5 and I try to just avoid going over 5 and get as many scores under 5 as possible. Obviously, I didn't invent that system but it has worked well for me! Great vid Luke, keep up the great work!!
One more thing...Luke....Luke buddy....PLEASE for the love of God get out of that habit of one handing short putts!!!! Players like you and I cannot afford to take anything for granted!!! LOL. That should've been your New Year's resolution!
Easier said than done, a lot of people don't have the time to practice unfortunately and can only get out once or twice a month with work/family commitments.
If we could all play 3 or 4 times a week and dedicate a bit of time to the game I'd see your point.
Agree with you Canuck... on both points! 😂 I'll get that putting sorted 👍
This is my favourite course and I'm playing it soon in May. Great video!
It’s awesome! Thanks 🙌
Such a good looking course! Love your mindset as well even when things don't go your way!
Course was unreal Jonny!
Look forward to your content and enjoyed the video.
You drove it well. Just a few loose shots and no luck on the greens but still pretty good.
Thanks for sharing your golf experience.
Thanks for watching Kedbuka!
As a fellow content creator... your lead in is amazing!
Thanks Mike, appreciate it 👍
Nice drivers and some good irons- 2 out of 4 cylinders and very fun to watch 👍👍
Thanks Anders!
Love this concept and I also can't think of a better editor on Golf TH-cam
Appreciate that Mike 👍
Thanks it’s real evidence of how all is not ever lost and there is always a good round never far away.
100% Jonathan 👍
That course reminds me of Tanglewood Park Championship course in Clemmons, NC. It hosted the 1974 PGA Championship won by Lee Trevino
It's a beauty Sassy
I think the big diff between your game and a lot of 25+ HCP players is that you didn't have any chunks in that whole round. I throw away at least 6 shots per 18 holes by going 15 yards ahead of me. Great playing and your point at the end stands! We can get there!
Very true. My grass cutters were still rolling a good distance and staying in play which helped for sure
That's a tough course with a lot of slope. Getting to know the greens would help. On those fast greens you have to be below the hole. You probably know all this already. Thank you, very entertaining.
Thanks dude!
This was an enjoyable video!
Those greens looked so fast. If you're ever unsure on which way a green slopes, try aimpoint, straddle the line and feel the which way the green slopes with your feet. There seemed to be a few putts that went a different way to how you saw it.
Keep up the good work tho, you're progressing well
Cheers Craig. I have tried aim point once of twice and I genuinely don't seem to have any feel in my feet for slope haha
Looks like an average round for me there pal , that course looks stunning tho 👌 well played anyway mate always a pleasure to watch relatable golf 👍🏻 keep the content coming lads 🏴💪🏻⛳️
It was JT, putting let me down big time. Course was unreal though! 👊 Hope you're well dude!
Love your vids, can’t bring myself to watch, have injured my wrist and can’t play 😢
Oh Ryan. I feel for you mate. Wishing you a speedy recovery!
Some good some bad but that golf mate that's why we keep playing
Precisely mate! 😅
@UpDownGolf if you ever fancy a trip south to Leicester I'll pay for your day
I could be wrong but I think you had to play that water ball from where you hit it? Went in the water and didn’t cross the land on the other side.
You're right. We were conscious of holding up play behind us with the cameras etc
Good score your filming and not doubt rushed as well on those putts. Slight improvement on the short game should shave off 5+ shots.
Yeah some putting green sessions needed for sure James 👍
Your driver was solid today. Literally only one club working in the bag and it can take you to sub 90 as long as you keep it in play off the tee.
Summed up perfectly mate
As far as my game is concerned, if you can see that the ball is going into the hole and it hits the flagstaff, then it is sunk. Luke, you made 90 !
Aha I'll take that Richard 👊
Nice to see that you’re also human 😂. Impressive to still break 90 mate
Kind of 😂
Fentz not playing, not recording. Smoking cigs in the golf cart and driving 😂
Standard 😂
Enjoyed the video. Looks like a very nice course. If any of those putts would have been better you could have shot an easy 85. Good try though
I think you're right Kelly 👍
Still a good round.
Why didn’t Fents play?
Thanks Jeff. He was injured. He really wanted to though
He's got a severe case of the monster fades 😂@@UpDownGolf
Wait you weren’t doing a blindfolded while putting challenge Luke? Jk great video mate.
🙈
Play it as 'level fives' and take the pressure off yourself 👍
What is level fives Kent?
@@UpDownGolf Oh sorry Luke, I should've explained...
You give yourself a target of five shots per hole. Then just play the course a hole at a time.
If you have a Par on a Par3 it gives you two extra strokes on a Par5 and one on a Par4 to keep to YOUR par or target. If you have a four on a Par3 it still gives you an extra stroke on one of the other holes. If you bogey a Par4 it's no issue as it's only a Par in your head.
It's just a different way of looking at the course and removes pressure, making it easier to achieve your goal 👍👍👍
Yeah i like that. I'll remember that for next time 👍
I can see your point Luke, 91 with a significant number of shots unnecessarily or unfortunately left on the course.
Plenty left out there for sure
"Not that hard" - 4yrs later, still trying :D
Edit: now I've watched the video, other things that help you "break 90": 250 yard drives, driver accuracy, great tee shots on par3s, hardly 3 putting and no duffed chips. Other than that, easy 👍
Hey Vnam, I didn't mean any disrespect to players trying to break 90. I was more trying to point out that the level of golf needed to do it is very attainable.
I had five 3 putts and a 4 putt in this round. A good few of my 2 putts were from inside 10 feet in total. Numerous thin chips around the green. Numerous duffed approach shots. The only thing I had working well for me was the driver
@@UpDownGolf No disrespect received! I just think you sold yourself short, your standard of play in that round was actually very good imo , especially the distance you can get on your drive and irons (relative to most amateurs).
Take that damn flag out it just cost you a birdie….the only time the flag might benefit you is when you hit it much to hard and it just happens to go across the hole, how often does that happen? Just take the flag out 👍🏼👍🏼
I do take it out most of the time T. It was so far away I just never thought to tbh
I'd say - move up a set of tees ....
Why?
You do not seem to be consistently lone enough off the tee to warrant playing a 6400 yd course. If you lowered that to around 6000 - 6200 you'd likely hit more greens in regulation. Nothing personal. I'm roughly in the same boat.
Great round, Luke! You're right, just a shot here and there and you're looking at an all timer! I guess I'll be the nitpicky asshole in the comments this time: 17:23 It's against the rules to jump on the green to try to make your ball fall in, and it also creates footprints in the green, which can cause people behind you to miss putts. OK I'm done being the nitpicky asshole, sorry! Great vid, keep em comin! YOU JAMMIE SOD!!
😂 tastefully done Pickle
did your playing partners not realizing they're in the presence of legends?
They did not 😂
Breaking 90 isnt hard if you play enough golf and know and can manage your game. Getting down to low mid and single figures is more about limiting mistakes and damage on the card more than anything.
Yeah agreed Migs 👍
It's been proven that, in over 95% of putts, taking the flag out is better than leaving it in. Hole 6 is a perfect example, really cannot understand why people keep putting with the flag in... Even for TH-camrs, ask yourself how many times you've seen a 'flag in' rescuing the putt vs. how many times you've seen it bounce out...
I do usually take it out these days Steinar but I just never thought too on that one given how far away it was. Cost me for sure
@@UpDownGolf I don't know how many strokes 'I didn't think.. ' has cost me over the years 😂 Glad I'm not alone 🙈😁
@@steinarhovi3321 Definitely not alone!
Dont tell us how you did in the title it spoils the video
👍
Great driving mate, but your putting is costing you an awful lot of shots.
It really is my weakness isn't it
Your putting stance is very narrow
Interesting, thanks
