  • we spent the weekend in the Utrecht region, which is an area full of medieval castles. we stayed the night in castle Sterkenburg, where you can sleep in the tower room. we also went to visit other castles nearby, such as De Haar, Amerongen and Duurstede castles. and even ended up visiting a dutch windmill, as it was the national day of the windmills in the netherlands.

this trip was part of a weekend getaway that Joery had planned for me (as a surprise). and, as you can see, it was really unexpected, I really had no idea of what was going on! specially since Joery had told me that we were not sleeping out. I really thought that the canoe trip and the picnic were already the surprise itself.
We slept in the Castle of Sterkenburg (Kasteel Sterkenburg, Driebergen) which is a Bed and Breakfast. So, we stayed in the Tower bedroom. The castle is located just next to Utrecht, - we could actually see Utrecht from the tower. one thing I really liked about this hotel is that it still keeps its medieval looks, so you really feel like a queen sleeping there.
it was really special and a really calming atmosphere with a lot of birds around, i was speechless... i really enjoyed it, the nice weather helped as well. to think this was just next to Utrecht is just mindblowing!!
the next day we went to see a WINDMILL. what is more Dutch than a windmill? we got lucky since it was the Dutch Day of the Windmills, so we could get inside and see all the mechanisms. We also got a chance to see the castle of Wijk bij Duurstede.
