    I learned this with my first editor the hard way - by paying more money to her for the additional step that was much needed. I believe you explained with clarity, what people like me needed to know earlier! Thank you, Julie!

      In art school, they told us to “kill our darlings.” It meant essentially the same thing. Sometimes the things that we are most enamored with are the things that are also distracting, and keeping us from doing our best job.

    I really enjoyed the discussion on the different types of editing in your book. Since I watched your videos before reading, I literally heard your voice as I read it. And yes, I posted a review 👍

      @@BookLaunchers you are very welcome. I have been using your self-publishing book as a guide for my first real non-fiction book (approx 40% first draft done). I’ve been concentrating on the reader, the hook, the title/subtitle, chapter titles, first chapter, and first line of each chapter to have a hook. Thanks again for a great book.

    Great example of why we need a proofreader.

    I have nothing but respect for BL’s editors. Be they development editors or content editors… and now that I’ve sent off the manuscript, I’m looking forward to working with copy editors and proofreaders! I was told that it might be difficult or frustrating… that it might be emotionally draining or require compromise. I found that every bit of advice was phenomenally helpful, and showed me how I could bring my book to a much higher level than I would have ever expected.

    Something I always look for whether I’m copy editing or proofreading is consistency in word order. Sometimes I’ll find dangling modifiers that are amusing to read, but won’t pass in a final review. My aim is to make sure that the book is the best version it can be, and help the author’s dreams come true! It’s such fulfilling work!

    I realize that I am both a copy editor and a proofreader. Which is great for the client I think ; he wouldn’t have to hire two different people, just me 🙂

    • @BookLaunchers
      @BookLaunchers  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Honestly I still recommend someone hire both - the reality is that you have biases and there are things you won't spot that someone else will. We've worked on hundreds of books and I promise even the best of the best miss things ... so a second set of eyes is always better. If someone is on a budget though - it's nice to have an all in one option.

    Eliminate double spaces between sentences? What does she mean?

    • @BookLaunchers
      @BookLaunchers  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hitting the space bar twice after a period. That used to be the standard. Now you just hit it once.

    • @epi_sto_letes
      @epi_sto_letes 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@BookLaunchers That's what I thought. I still intentionally hit the space bar twice after a period. I think this new standard of a single space is a mistake. We have a single space after a comma and a semicolon, which gives a sense of a continued idea or thought. A double-space emphasizes that a one thought is done and a new one begins.
      I suppose next we'll be running one paragraph into the next without a new line separation. The first-line indentation to mark a new paragraph is already considered dépassé or even quaint.
      I'm speculating that this new standard was introduced by publishers as it could reduced that amount of paper needed for any given publication.

    Julie, I think your videos are great, but you have to sink thousands of dollars into a book to get all those different edits. Then most books sell less than 250 copies in their life time.! Makes no sense at all.

    • @BookLaunchers
      @BookLaunchers  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes - editing is the most expensive part of the process for most authors. That said, authors that invest in the success of their book, position it for the reader, and continuously market it can get a return on their investment. Most of our authors sell 250 or more copies in launch month alone so they do a lot better than that stat.

    • @mikecook_author
      @mikecook_author 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Sally Alter, you are correct, a ROI is not guaranteed. Paying money to get help with making your book better is definitely a gamble. Never spend money you don’t have. But betting on yourself has better odds than the Powerball!
