  • ABANDONED 1968 Plymouth Satellite taken from the scrap pile & made into a daily driver race car just in time for the Roadkill Duct Tape Drags in Tucson, AZ.
    In this episode I venture to Tucson, AZ and "attempt" to drag race The Ratty Satty. We ran into a host of transmission, fuel delivery, and electrical issues that made our passes pretty challenging. Only one thing to do & that is make it better!

    Never run a Torqueflite without the throttle linkage. They don't have vacuum modulators, so the trans thinks you are idling. This gives low line pressure, and you will burn the clutches out of it. Your acceleration problem is fuel related. You are running the carb dry. Jet extenders in the rear bowl, and a big volume fuel pump should help.

    Glad you had fun with T bones. I am a 727 guy . Very easy to go threw that transmission and reseal it and new clutches & steels. Also go with a higher stall at a fraction of the cost. Save the big money for your other 2 builds.

    Mega thumbs up with Dragging with T-Bone. If the car falls flat in third "every time", not first, not second, but third, it doesn't sound like a carb issue. You can never go wrong getting a better carb but I think the issue is in the trans.
    Even though you don't want to keep the trans, I get it, but the 727 guys out there will confirm or shoot down this suggestion: Band adjustment. Don't think it would hurt to run through the process and see what you get.

    • @itsnotadodgerog2050
      @itsnotadodgerog2050 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Been thinking again about falling flat in third; what is your fuel line size? If its 5/16", it will need 3/8".

  • @MoParRus340
    @MoParRus340 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    That falling on its face has nothing to do with kick down linkage. And, disconnecting the kick down linkage will hinder your shift. The harder you push the kickdown linkage the firmer the shift. So disconnecting it will tend to make shifts lazy. You definitely want the kickdown hooked up. It sounds to me like you’re running out of gas at the third gear shift. Manual shift at about 5500.

  • @70383man
    @70383man ปีที่แล้ว

    Check the fuel pump pushrod for wear and check your fuel pressure from 0-100 mph, I’m sure you’re running out of gas.
    Never run a Mopar trans without a kick down as that’s what applies the line pressure for the load applied, kick downs are very easy to adjust with a service manual.

  • @brianandglendaharkin9457

    Get her sorted . At least you had some runs . Good way to start getting her sorted . All the best with it Brian Tasmania 👍🏻🇦🇺💯⛽️it’s sucking air it will never run correctly with that fuel ⛽️ tank issue . That 727 will eat your manual for breakfast if you fix it right . Your fuel ⛽️ is the start of your problem .

  • @sarjag97
    @sarjag97 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I suggest you check the length of the fuel pump push rod. They do wear down. The bogging may be from the fuel pump not being able to keep the carb bowl full under full throttle.

    What overdrive trans do you have in that car? I would assume it's a 727 which doesn't have overdrive.... running a 727 with out the TV linkage is really really bad for them btw.. it's not a kickdown it actually adds line pressure with throttle, without it the trans stays in low line pressure and will smoke the clutches right out.. Upside is they are super easy to rebuild..
    P.S. it sounded like you were running out of fuel btw.. (i haven't finished the video, i'm sure you figured it out already)

    Listening to the video it sounds like it’s starving for fuel. Is the steel fuel line new or old? I think I saw in a previous video you replace the filter, hoses and sending unit, right? Sorry you had so many issues Dave. When you were on the shoulder in the staging lanes I thought you just ran out of gas. Anyway, had a blast even though I was feeling a little bit off for the weekend. It was a pleasure meeting you. We’ll see you again at MATS.

      Okay, that might be your problem. Here’s a Charger story for you. My 70 would run and drive fine for awhile after I got it running but then after awhile if I jumped on it, it would starve for fuel, just like your Satellite. It left me on the side of the road a few times. If I waited a little bit it would start up like nothing was wrong. Trying to figure it out my Dad told me to pull the soft fuel lines and put compressed air to the steel line. Sure as shit, it would pressurize and not blow through the other end. I ran a new line next to the old one and the problem went away. Good luck fixing it Dave. BTW, I asked Jeremy to give you my number.

    A fresh 727 will eat your 4-spd for lunch. Trust me. Not only that but you stand a good chance of starting to break stuff with the 4-spd. On the street a 4-spd is definitely more fun but on the strip the 727 is the stuff. Did you put a new gas tank and new fuel line in it? I have been watching all your videos but don’t remember.

  • @jaynedoe1959
    @jaynedoe1959 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    You`ve probably been told by now, but;
    You CANNOT DISCONNECT THE KICKDOWN LINKAGE!
    ...Unless you want to smoke your clutches, that is.
    Lokar makes a really nice, if expensive cable kickdown, but your stock one should work if adjusted correctly.
    4 speeds are fun, but not as consistent as an auto & 727 trans are very good.
    If yours is from a motorhome it likely has a low 1st gear (2.86?) & heavy clutch pack.
    However it probably also has a dog of a low stall torque convertor.
    You want one in the range of 2200, but could go a bit higher (not much)
    Your motor home 440 must have a cast crankshaft & isn`t reliable above 5500rpm.
    So, you need to do the math for 5500 at the end of your run to figure tire size & rear end gear.
    A solid motor mount or a tight chain on the drivers side motor mount, remove unneeded weight, move the battery to the passenger trunk over the tire, stock suspension in a good state, torsion bars on the loose side, 90/10 front shocks & sticky tires would help.
    That`s a good torque motor & you want to transfer the weight of that beast to the rear.
    11`s? I doubt it, but mid 12`s is possible.
    Don`t ride your kid in that death trap!
    Oh, update...I almost forgot. Forget all the exotic, imagined voodoo about vapor lock.
    Your engine was running out of fuel, plain & simple.
    You said it`s leaking fuel? DUH, there`s your problem, but maybe your carb float level could be looked at as well as your jet sizes & secondaries... vacuum, I`m assuming?
    (You can buy spring kits or vacuum pots to tailor their opening)
    I can`t recall what carb you`re running, but those adjustments are relative to your RPM/dependent on your stall speed, but you want that sucker dumping all the gas it can take without bogging & yes, shift manually using a tach, but run the auto trans & put a blanket on it.
    Water burnouts can be deadly, no chit!

    • @jaynedoe1959
      @jaynedoe1959 ปีที่แล้ว

      You`ll need some 906 heads & a forged crank. Then a higher stall convertor & you can run 4.86 gears to make 11`s.@@rustbucketrestos6511

    I had a 383 in my road runner, I had the motor rebuilt stock form, I put a brand new 750 Holley on it and it fell on it`s face, in all gears, huge hesitation no top end, my mailman who was rebuilding a Charger and is a gearhead came by, he said give me your old Carter 650, he rebuilt it, we bolted it on, he set the idle and kick down, it ran like a top, idle, top end everything was great, a 750 was just too much fuel for a stock 383, I offered him the 750 Holley in exchange for his help, he said no thanks, sell it, Most Mopars had Carters, he was a firm believer in no Holleys on a old Mopar engine. Your seems fuel related, is the bowl empty by the time you hit third, is it a worn cam lobe the fuel pump rides on, air in the line, or the fuel flying to the back of the tank and by the time you hit 3rd your sucking air, where`s Chris Birdsong when you need em, I know one thing, my man T-Bone won`t forget that experience, I bet when he`s older and doing his own wrenching, he`ll be like dad remember the duct tape drags and the Satelite only had 2 gears and then fell on it`s face, and your like yeah, who could forget, and have a great laugh, that`s what it`s all about brother, that makes gear heads.

    DID YOU SAY 110 OCTANE??? In a motor home 8.0:1 (if your lucky), engine??? W H Y ???????? It would have run better on 87 octane.. Also, by the sounds of it, you are running out of gas. Did you use a cheap fuel pump?? You were pushing the RPMs to around 5K and a typical MH engine runs around 3K - 3400 out the back door... It's either NOT picking up fuel or your pump is junk or your fuel consumption is INSANE!!! Also, make sure you are running the correct COIL for your set up.. It sure sounded like it was leaning out.. Also, a properly adjusted kickdown is essential.. NEVER run without the kickdown..... UNLESS you install a manual shift body..
