@@tonmisty I am lucky because I am a college and university lecturer, they insist on employing supposed minorities (Disabled people are not a minority but we are included in them) However, I know what it's like for my children, one is autistic and one has severely poor mental health due to childhood trauma from her other parent (her words). Neither of them find it easy or even just a bit hard to get work. They will throw you out of the job, this then looks worse on the disabled persons cv because they are painted as being the person at fault when it's the company and their lack of understanding and support which is the issue and inflexibility on their part. I was absent for a while waiting for a cardiac investigation but my employer pressured me to go back so I did. I had my heart attack three weeks later. I had to wait a few days for surgery then was told to take plenty of recovery time but my sick pay ran out ( due to the long wait before the MI) and I was forced to claim ESA as I dropped to half pay. They refused me saying I was fit for work while my cardiac consultant said I wasn’t. I had to go back. I was unwell frequently due to medication issues and not being fully recovered so they sacked me for high absenteeism. They tried to push me out earlier by saying I was poor at my job even though I had been doing it without any issues for over ten years. I found a new job but during Covid I got cancer. I couldn’t go through that again so my husband told me to quit and he worked extra hours. While undergoing treatment I have studied for a BA and graduate next June. At times manually intensive. But around 2015 I started to have issues with arthritis. Then circa 2019 lost my job on the grounds of capability due to arthritis in my toes, ankles, knees, hands(fingers of both hands) and more recently lumbar spondylitis(likely due in part to fracturing my L1 Vertebrae) . My mobility is limited as my ankles and knees give way. I can’t sit for to long as my knees lock. I can’t stand either for to long either due to pain in my knee and if I walk I can and have fallen. I have dropped mugs of tea/coffee, bottles and pans of boiled veg. Turning the kitchen into a battlefield. I’m currently awaiting to see a rheumatology consultant and an orthopaedic consultant over my feet which in all likelihood will require 2 separate operations. I’d like to see suits like Starmer work for a month in a manual job to see the reality of what manual work entails. NB arthritis is not the only condition I face….

One of the things that gets consistently overlooked in these discussions is how the great majority of those out of work have been paying taxes and national insurance for years, often decades. They have paid in far more than they've ever received and then get demonised for claiming benefits. It's disgraceful. It would be like paying into an insurance policy for decades and being demonised if you have to make a claim.

Why is it that the only value an individual has is as an economic unit of production? Is it not possible that one can "contribute to society" in other ways, apart from being an employee? And if someone cannot be an employee, does that mean they are irrelevant, that they don't matter, that they are disposable? Another question - if so many people cannot work because they are ill, why not tackle the causes of illness?

i developed a servere arthritic disability 20 yrs ago and worked through it.. to the point where now I am in extreme agony and can barely move & was let go from my job on grounds of ill health. for the last couple of years I have been my mums carer. she passed away 2 months ago, and now, despite me giving "fit notes" for my disability-which spell out "i cannot work", I have been given a work coach from universal credit whos job it is to get me back to work.
Its very depressing. Makes me feel like a mug working 40 years, only to be shat on when i cant work no more.
I dont know what they plan to do with me, since i am out of breath on the phone and constantly screaming in pain. The sick thing for me is that I didnt get pips either because i can heat food in the microwave. i can dress myself- even if it takes me 2 hours.

Society is so depressing and restrictive that it is hardly surprising that people are suffering from anxiety to varying degrees. Add to that that there doesnt seem to be any 'reward' for being a good member of society and you do ask yourself what is the point.

10 years in government and nothing that Labour is currently saying they're going to do is anything that the Tories did. You can't keep calling people you don't agree with as right-wing, conservative or tory. The Labour party is leftwing socialism, demanding the workforce gets back to work no matter what is leftwing socialism bordering on communism. Nothing about it is Tory.
