    great webinar today guys really enjoyed it. I have never used / seen the atom chef tools plugins before, very impressive workflow for adding a large crowd to the scene. Very clever use of the rig rail as well I have never used that for anything other than a camera so that was a nice trick that gave me a few ideas.

There are a lot of popping around the cuts, sometimes it's the last frame (shot of the flock of birds e.g) and sometimes it's the first couple of frames (flag is flat for 2 frames at the start at 1:01:35 then pops into its animation). What is causing these issues and what's the fix?

    Just a small correction, adding the divide node @3:43 doesn't allow you to control the speed of blinking: you need the divide before the sine for it to work. Just as a heads up for someone following the tutorial and wanting to make it blink faster or slower.

    9:00 A bit confused here.
    EventTick should run on every tick already, why set a timer to run it every second? Is the part after beginPlay redundant ?
    Or did you just disabled the default ticking?

  • @vacui_dev
    @vacui_dev 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    8:53 if the timer is being set to loop at a cadence of 1 second, how are the tire rotations being updated every frame? Clearly it works (12:33) but I'd like to understand the usage of the timer function a bit more. Is something in unreal extrapolating intermediate rotation values from the values being assigned every second (and is this going to cause the tire to appear to skid in place for a half second when the truck stops), or is the eventTick being called more often than 1 second (in which case, why are they assigning a value of 1 second to the timer node?)

  • @yrussq
    @yrussq 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    3:42 - Am i missing something? How does he want to control the speed by dividing sine on a constant? He is just lowering the "max amplitude" of the sine. You can control speed aka rate by multiplying input time on a number not by dividing sine on a number.

    I loved this webinar , so many things to learn. My main interest was to understand how to make cinematics for automotive nature projects. I found some really good pointers here to use and I will definitely do them. So after the webinar, I try to give a try to using rail actor with my car actor. Did all the nodes as explained in the tutorial BUT my issue is , I don't see the tyres moving either in cinematic or when I was preparing rail based path. My question is , when you are making the rail , the movement of the car , on hit play button, is it already set? Because in tutorial I did not see if that was done before you made the rail. Can you kindly explain what I am missing here? Thank you

    • @MatthewDoyleArtist
      @MatthewDoyleArtist 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      HI Ahsan. This was technically not meant to be a step by step tutorial; however, you are correct that the tires do not spin when playing the cinematic in editor. They only spin when you play in editor or "simulate" as they are driven by blueprints. There is nothing going on in the cinematic other than setting the rail to go from the beginning to the end. Everything is controlled by the blueprint. The tires should properly spin in PIE. Let me know if you have any trouble.

    • @AICineVerseStudios
      @AICineVerseStudios 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MatthewDoyleArtist Actually, It did work exactly the way you explained after I run the sequencer from level blueprint, perfect.
      However, I got stuck into another issue. In your tutorial you made relative rotation for 2 tires but the other two were not done, I think. Anyhow, the other two tires if I plug them into same node of relative rotation with tire 1 and 2, the tire 3 and 4 are rotated on y axis and shows tires inside out. What would be right way to make them not flip on the axis?

    • @MatthewDoyleArtist
      @MatthewDoyleArtist 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AICineVerseStudios You are correct. They will be rotated 180 degrees. So, create another Relative Rotation node that is connected to tires 3 & 4, and leave the Y rotation at 0. Connect the first RelativeRotation to the second one (execution flow), and wire the -1 multiplier to the Z rotation too. That will do it. Like this: ibb.co/0ZKjfb6

  • @WildOxStudios
    @WildOxStudios 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I'm a little confused??.....Why are we setting a timer to fire tick every second when tick fires every frame? @8:46 .... Also your saying that your setting the world loc every second when in reality your only setting on begin play and telling the event tick function to run on the timer not the set..... the update during tick is actually updating based on the tick settings of the actor ... the timer is logically not doing anything here. This entire logic chain could be done on tick alone without the timer needed unless you have actor tick disabled on the actor class settings and in that case i'd say make a custom event call from the timer function instead of using tick.

    • @metrocalkstudio3855
      @metrocalkstudio3855 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello, you are alright event tick will always fire execution every frame and the function will not work properly, I can say it doesn't even work . but for who doesn't know "event tick may harm the CPU, imagine you have a 70 truck running on your game, this is a story game based so the best way is to save CPU and GPU for the player events and behaviours"

    • @MatthewDoyleArtist
      @MatthewDoyleArtist 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi. This does work. However, you are correct that Event Tick is probably not the best event to use to be honest. I probably should instead have created a new custom Event. My mistake, but the principals are still sound and the code does work. Also, FYI, this webinar was for Arch Vis Enterprise not games.

    • @theflow3513

      @@MatthewDoyleArtist Problem is, it's simply wrong explained in the video when you build the Timer. It will be very confusing for people. For me it was :-)

    • @WildOxStudios
      @WildOxStudios 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Flow the logic will work but only because tick is updating the logic chain regardless of the timer calling the function. You could simply set the variables on begin play and link up the tick logic without the timer and get the same result.

If that is the case you are really not giving it independent commands if that makes sense .

    • @brenjamen9590
      @brenjamen9590 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tick is ok, just shouldn't be used in too many things. What makes ticks bad is when there is a lot of hard calculations involved with them. If you think about it like that, it makes ticks make a lot more sense. Ticks functions aren't always bad, but the amount of work per tick is what has the possibility to make them bad.
      In this case though, yeah. I'd argue not the best use of ticks, however his intention isn't to use this for a game, more for a nice example of bringing life to a scene. It won't be bogging the project down in the short term, and gives a good quick end result to his goal of animating the tires.
      But don't be afraid to use them in certain instances! They have potential to be extremely useful, and in most modern games there are going to be a few running at almost all times. What's the saying... Quality! Not quantity.
      Sorry for the rant, just my two cents!

    Even an Epic employee tried to alt drag to duplicate an item inside the BP editor, and couldn't hahah
    That should a clear flag to implement that feature, it breaks the flow when the engine doesn't behave as expected

      ;) I'm not an employee actually, but I agree it would be nice to have that feature.

      @@MatthewDoyleArtist I believe the actor movement tools need an overhaul in general, the snapping is a nightmare to work with for example

    This was very well put together however it gets a bit murky when the instructors accent is so heavy he doesn’t pronounce his words as clear. Just makes it a bit more challenging to follow along and requires rewinding quite a bit to understand words he uses.

      I thought he spoke extremely well! Just put your subtitles/closed captions on. I'm always impressed by those that speak so well, when English is probably not their native language.

    Super excited at first.
    But a lot of steps aren't exlpained , that's ruin everything. You didn't say that we need first to create a new emitter before search for an empty one and also you skip all the animation part.

    Instead of getting distance traveled and getting world location why not just set a rotation speed for the tire? Why base it off the location and distance traveled? Seems like a lot of unnecessary work, when you could just tell the tire to always rotate at a specific speed especially if its a background car

    • @MatthewDoyleArtist
      @MatthewDoyleArtist 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sure you could do that. But this way makes sure the tires are rotating at the correct speed based upon the distance traveled. What happens if you speed the vehicle up or slow it down? The tires (if set to a single speed) will not look correct. They will rotate too slow or too fast. This was done on a "hero" car which you can clearly see the tires rotating in the shot.

    I followed the tutorial step by step didn't work for me, I HATE BLUEPRINTS YOU HAVE TO JUMP THROUGH HOOPS TO MAKE A WHEEL SPIN CERTAIN THINGS SHOULD BE 1 CLICK AND DONE IN 2021 LIKE ROTATING A WHEEL.
