- Fishing for Cod at St´Pierre Bank in February 2004. This is big spawning Cod and it manifests that there is plenty of Cod at Grand Banks despite the claim that the cod stock has not recovered since the stock was "over fished" and the moratorium was set. Film was taken by an Icelandic captain who was a guest aboard a Canadian trawler.

As a Canadian, watching this, it makes me so proud and happy that we allow anyone (it seems) to help themselves to our fish.
Isn't that generous?. The waters are almost empty of fish but please help yourselves foreigners.

Cape Fortune? 5 ton for 20 min is not what I would call plenty of cod, back when cod stocks were good that should be a 30-40ton bag atleast, still got a ways to go yet but it is a sign.
Cod does not spawn on the bottom. They spawn in the uppermost 50 m and the egg float and hatch near the surface. This is not an Icelandic trawler. It is a Canadian trawler, but the video was taken by an Icelander on board. He was consulting on fluid ice machine. Icelandic grounds are loaded with cod.
Atleast theres one person commenting on this vide that has a clue about what there talking about.as a 23 year veteran of georges bank ground fishery.it makes me sick on how out of control these rod and reel guys are with there false accusations and ideas of how our fish stocks our collapsing

@FisherManStan88 amen brother..however. there is a labour shortage in western canada..east coast labour is needed in the billion dollar oil sands expansion out west..its never been in the best interest of government to allow small rural communities to survive in places like newfoundland...so no one with the power really cared about the fish stocks...the result people moving out west where they are needed most.almost as if it was planned.
when you see the oil sands it becomes clear.

Wouldn't be half as bad if cod stocks were low and we actually profited from it
please for the love of god ban all trawlers and only keep fishing with a rod legal
the only reason there are any cod in that net at all is because of the moratorium and regulations that were put in place. we could continue fishing if everyone would follow a few simple limitations. instead by the time we hit year 2050 the oceans will be so depleted, only full of green algae and invertebrates. we are wasting what is probably our best resource, seeing it makes my heart ache...

Stocks recovered some years ago, according to fishermen. Even trawlers fishing for green halibut and red fish have problems avoiding cod. Perhaps this is kept quiet for political reasons or, the "scientists" feel burned and think it is safer not to fish. They still think that cod was over fished, they cannot accept the fact that the cod starved to dead as a result of the sea climate getting worse, i.e. colder. trawlers reuined every fishery they were into . huge draggers fishing 24 - 7 , nothing could stand that . most countrys have banned them years ago ..... National Sea Products had the biggest fleet in canada .... now not one dragger , but they still have quota , and they get other trawlers to catch it for them . the fishery in canada is done ! ... only a select few are getting rich off it now. Sad end to one of the worlds biggest renewable resources .
