I have to admit that while I adore Jane Austen, I was a bit sceptical about trying a "regency romance". I was expecting something silly and frothy, and maybe a bit too romantic for my taste. Well, The Nonesuch certainly was a romance, but more in the tradition of Jane Austen. It's staggering to think of all the research that Georgette Heyer must have done. And the language! I made note of countless words and phrases that were new to me. I love a book that broadens my vocabulary. This one was such a joy to read! The perfect choice for February. Much appreciation to you both for continuing to widen my reading!

Dear Miranda and Donna, what an engaging and delightful discussion of The Nonesuch! I agree with so many of your points and wish too, that she was televised more, as I think adaptations, done right, would really be wonderful! I don't comment a huge amount on YT, but, I would also really love to take the opportunity to thank you for your work - as Anne would say, you are a true kindred. I have picked up so many book recommendations from you, even as a reader of almost 50! I just finished Reunion, which I was so struck and moved by and The Last English Garden, which I also loved. To you, Donna, as a mother myself, you epitomise all the warmth, wit and comfort of motherhood I aspire to! Heartfelt thanks to you both ❤

We must take care to not spread ourselves too thin. Our health and well being is not worth it. Besides you need to enjoy the beautiful upcoming spring and not work, work, work. Hello, Miranda and Donna! I was overjoyed to learn that your April CBC choice is Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen. I was presented with this as a prize for English at the tender age of twelve, yet, I have never read it! Its choice by you as a CBC read has made me dig out my one and only 'award', which is actually a very beautiful hardback version, with quality, deckle-edged paper that has not yellowed or stained in any way over the last - hehem - 48 years. Thank you for also choosing my favourite book, Wind in the Willows, as March's read (like you, I have several different publications of this wonderful tome). In fact, thank you for existing, and doing such a wonderful job each week in cheering me up and making life that little more bright !

I love the Nonesuch, Ancilla is one of my all-time favourite heroines. It was wonderful to listen to you. My impression is that Georgette Heyer books are often handed from mother to daughter. I took A Civil Contract from my mother's bookshelves, and when she saw I loved it, she gave me Arabella for Christmas. Since then, I haven't stopped reading her books.
About Tiffany: I'm an educator and tend to see characters through the lense of childhood and its imprint it leaves. Actually, as funny as Tiffany is written, her story is sad. She acts up and relies on her beauty, which we love to hate. However, as an orphan, she has suffered loss, and she's unwanted everywhere. Her money and her beauty open doors for Tiffany. Heyer doesn't empathize with her at all, but I confess that I do. I see that Ancilla not only manages her well but cares about her. She could have taken sweet revenge in the end and humiliated Tiffany, but she didn't.

I wasn’t able to read the selection for this month yet but I have intentions of reading it at some point soon. Your returning to a weekly video is certainly understandable. Your videos are such a treat, and I can only imagine the amount of time and effort you put into them. And of course, it’s always wonderful to see Donna too. I always enjoy these videos and the comments from other club members and the different insights. With the language examples given, I’m even more excited to finally get to this book.

Hello Miranda and Donna, well that was a surprise - where did February go? I was so delighted and surprised to find it was time for the Comfort Book Club discussion and thoroughly enjoyed everyone talking about this gentle and comedic novel. I hope you are soon back on track, Miranda, after such a stressful week. Any time spent in your company is a wonderful treat and it is important to me, personally, to know that you bringing us such great content is done so in a way that doesn't impinge on your wellbeing or might burn out your amazing creativity. Envious Casca was my first Georgette Heyer and I was a little skeptical of the Regency romance ones. I was pleasantly surprised in reading The Nonesuch. Though you haven’t steered me wrong on books yet. I loved all of the humor in the book as well as the unexpected things that happened. I’m looking forward to reading more of both her mysteries and her romance books. I trusted you enough in your recommendations, that I have actually built up a pretty good collection of used Heyer books as I have come across them. So now I can look forward to many more pleasant reading hours. Though D. E. Stevenson and Molly Clavering remain my favorites, I can see Heyer becoming a new favorite. I’m looking forward to The Wind in the Willows also.

Hello Miranda and Donna. I loved this book and your discussion. Contrary to many readers I was actually annoyed by the accumulation of slang in some parts of the book but I got used to it. My frustration came from the fact that being a translator I “need to” know the meaning of everything and English is not my mother tongue. This however led me to an excellent website about Regency romance and life. Many thanks again for your excellent choices. ❤

Ms. Mills, I am glad that you are making your self care a priority.
While it was enjoyable watching more vlogs, I appreciate your need to cut back.
I don’t think that the preparation, filming and editing that is required is fully grasped by the outsider. And, of course, you have other obligations and interests.
And you must have time to relax, read and to enjoy your life.
You continue to give generously of yourself and it is much appreciated.
I, for one, heartily endorse your decision. It is one thing to give generously to others.
It is quite another thing if it causes you to sacrifice your sanity and perhaps even your health.
Take care and I look forward to your next visit.

This was my first Georgette Heyer novel and I was totally charmed. Ancilla Trent was added to the list of favorite literary characters I keep in my commonplace book. I smiled throughout the reading of this book just as I smiled (and nodded) while viewing this video. I have such an admiration for Heyer's use of language and her skill at writing dialogue and as I do when reading Austen, found myself wishing we spoke in such a thoughtful and witty manner in modern times. Thank you Miranda, Donna and The Comfort Book Club and hope you all have a wonderful weekends! Super excited about "Sense and Sensibility"!!!💕

Thoroughly enjoyed this month's Comfort Book Club read. My introduction to Georgette Heyer, and goodness what a 'ripping yarn' . The characters are so well described, love the conversation and the regency slang and I swear I could literally hear Mrs Underhill say 'rumgumption!' . After much searching to buy a copy of Wintercombe here in America, I gave up my search. Surprisingly, I found a rather old copy at my library. It is so good! I am halfway through. Hello Miranda and Donna, I hope you both are well despite your taxing week. Thank you once again for challenging me and my reading choices. This was my first Georgette Heyer novel. Even though I am a native English speaker (American English) the dialogue in this book was a fun challenge. It left me wondering why there isn’t a regency era dictionary. The characters were terribly charming and quirky, and I loved Georgette Heyer’s development of them. I found the book so engrossing that I wanted to know more about this time period and ended up purchasing The Time Traveler’s Guide to Regency Britain by Ian Mortimer. I highly recommend this book, it has helped me understand what was going on in the background of these regency novels and what led up to the regency period. Thank you again for another great read. Till next month, cheers!

Thank you Miranda and Donna, for introducing me to Georgette Heyer. I loved The Nonesuch, so funny and entertaining. I have found it hard to read in recent months, as I have been unable to concentrate and finish a single book for over six months now. I joined in with your book club in the hope that it might inspire me to return to reading, which I have enjoyed my whole life until recently. Thankfully it had the desired effect and I read it right through. In doing so, it has restored to me the pleasure of reading and I owe you a big thank you for that. I have already ordered a couple more Georgette Heyer novels to inspire me to continue and I will definitely be joining in with future book club choices. Thanks again.

Pausing at 10 minutes to write a comment... Hello, Miranda, Donna and the comfort book club. I had planned to send in a voice message too but got very tangled up in editing its length and shifting the priorities of what I wanted to say in the 45 seconds... Especially about such a wonderful novel it was hard to edit things away 😅 Anyway, I paused your video at the passage where you mention the regency vocabulary. Because I enjoyed very very much making a list of words I looked up while reading seeing as English isn't my first language. The list will go into my commonplace book. Thank you so much for introducing me to Georgette Heyer's work, it was my first novel by her.
Miranda, I really understand why you have decided to change your vlog schedule and I just wanted to say that I'm happy to watch your videos whenever you have time and energy to share them. I'm working my way through all your vlogs and enjoying everyone of them. They are wonderful. But to find this one about a Georgette Heyer book is so amazing. She always seems to a forgotten author (except to her fans of course). I don't know anyone personally who admires her novels. hello! When we enjoy something so much, as your vlogs, we too often forget the amount of planning and work it takes, it's not that someone follows your around and then makes a video of it! it's a lot to ask from a person who also has other work commitments. Although I will certainly miss the 2 video format, it's totally understandable, Miranda. We - well, I for sure- will cherish a Sunday video even more! Have to say, I absolutely devoured 'All sorts of lives' and am currently on a personal voyage with Katherine Mansfield, reading her journal, letters, biography and short stories. Hers was a fascinating life, however short it was. So, thank you for introducing her to me, I'd never payed any attention to KM before and knew nothing about her.

I totally support your decision the return to one video a week, you give so much of yourself and self care is vital. Thank you so much for choosing Georgette Heyer, I always loved her books and had re read then so many times that I finally decluttered my collection! However (and this is a mystery to me) the Nonesuch came as a surprise, how could I possibly have forgotten Sir Waldo……and that it was set in my part of Yorkshire too? Delighted to say that my collection is growing again, great discussion, lovely to see so many first time readers in the comments too.

My aunt bought me a couple of Georgette Heyer books as an early teenager. I attempted The Grand Sophy but found the language difficult at that time. This was therefore the first Georgette Heyer book I have read and I thoroughly enjoyed it! I have since found the copies my aunt bought me years ago (The Grand Sophy, Devils Cub and Arabella) and I am planning on reading them this year. Thank you Miranda for a wonderful recommendation.

I love Georgette Heyer & have most of her books which I regularly reread. I enjoy the books for the characters & plots but am also always so impressed

My mum gave me a Heyer (I think it was Friday’s Child), when I was poorly in bed and had run out of my own books. I’ve heard something similar from a few Heyer fans over the years. It was such a delightful surprise - how clever, skilled, witty and funny her writing was. Also how well drawn all of her characters are, even the bit parts. I’m not a bit surprised that Stephen Fry is a fan. Thank you for prompting me to read this one again.

Heyer's research is most obvious in her use of language and fashions but her description of Waterloo (an infamous army) was still be used as part of the official curriculum at Sandringham during her nephew's officer training.

For reading in Italian, I was young, but we don't have a regency language, so many of the expressions were translated with similar Italian sentences. The original version is of course more precise, and witty.
