    1988... I Graduated from high school. Saw two or three hardcore shows a week, hooked up some of the best herb Northern California has to offer constantly. Went on so many road trips just to skate other cities. Met so many cool people. Skated every day for hours. That was the life. I feel sorry for kids these days. Skateboarding is now "packaged for safe consumption" at every mall. And the internet.... It is incredible(I wouldn't be able to watch these vids, or find so much old/rare/obscure music), and at the same time has destroyed so many things that were unique, special, even sacred. The world will never be the same. I miss it.

    Man, when H-Street came out with 'Shackle' and 'Hocus Pocus' it was at the pinnacle of my own skating life, and these two videos just blew everything else away at the time. The most hardcore skate company at the time by far. I learned so many street tricks within a short period of time watching these on VHS. Tony Magnussun and Mike Ternasky had just blown Powell & Peralta into the dust forever.

    I seen Hokus Pokus before ever seeing Shackle.
    I was ride or die team H-street. Grew up in a small town. Hensley/Natas were my childhood skate hero’s.
    Last trick I learned was the 360 flip back in 91.
    I quit soon after..girlfriend/work/life….but I always remembered the feeling of my wheels passing over cracks in the sidewalk and the air on my face.
    If it wasn’t for my bad back, I’d skate again just for that feeling.
    Oh well, at least I have those childhood memories.

    That was a really fun era in skateboarding punk rock skate rock etc. we were skating in Converse cons Adidas hightops etc. for the heel padding and ankle support since Vans had none, boards were wide but functional lots of great wheels OJs, Hosoi Rockets, Independent trucks and lots of good drainage ditches, banks homemade mini & vertical ramps etc Savannah Slamma contest, and everyone had a great attitude and got along... Punk shows in warehouses and underground clubs were the best music scene ever Bad Brains Fugazi Circle jerks 7 seconds, the Cult, Joy Division. Even the southeast Georgia Florida Alabama etc. still had decent skate Parks lots of ramps and ditches underground spots. Rest in peace Jeff Grosso and Jay Adam’s, 100% Skateboarders For Life, Calvin from WPB/Atlanta!

    • @MukesBoy
      @MukesBoy 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      everyone that could afford one was riding the Hensley King Size out my way too. Us ghetto kids took what we could get. One of the best dudes to come out of Southern Indiana had a veriflex with a rail on every part of the fucking thing you could imagine except the tail and a big red robot graphic. A fucking nose rail Yo. Those boards were designed by people who didn't skate man. 6 months later dude was busting switch impossibles. I never could get them to wrap around my left foot,but I could get them to wrap on my right foot so I just stick with doing the switch,fakey and nollie. Only H street I ever had was a Sal Barbier. That board was my Wonderboy I swear. It must have been the perfect dimensions for me at 5ft 6 and 135. Remember those Hard Times boards by blockhead? That was the only brand new board I ever owned.

    Man what memories. I'm pretty thankful I and many others were a part of this amazing time in skateboarding. Between streets on fire and both h street vids, are some of the most influential ever. What really describes skating best was the aggressiveness and bonding with other friends. Being happy a friend landed an amazing rail or kick flip tail slide. Not angry or jealous. There of course are a ton, but the part that explains my point the best in shackle is at 24:16. Just a boss move saving a friend's board from rolling away after a wipeout. Pure class. A lesson that should be applied today, and everyone's life. Metaphorically speaking. Pure class.

    Talk about memories!!! That summer I went off (88') 8th grade I learned to drop in and skate ramp, street skating everyday, all day, all night and in my sleep. The music was fast and always there in tape decks and funky speakers. My girlfriend liked to take her bikini top off (my first tits!) and skated to her pool all summer. A pair of vans half cabs on my feet, man it don't get much better than that!!!

      Nate Brenneman packed my 80's in one comment. I'm a little older, so my first tits were pretty much scaring mountains. Actually, I cant remember if they really were or if the dope was just kicking in hard. Anyway, what a decade. Wonder of the 2K kids could say that, too...

    I used to watch this with the morning J before hitting the streets to emulate the moves when I was 14. The credits show the band names but I've only ever found a few in real life. Sup with Mag not releasing a soundtrack that'd sell for sure. There's a few tunes I'd love to have in their OG version. Wonderful Broken Thing seem to be the only ones that have digital stuff to sell.
    Hensley just shreds so hard. It's still amazing, I own the VHS box set that I was gonna pass on to the next generation cause I don't have a VHS player...but the era of no comply...easiest and most subtle trick no one ever bothered learning.

    as I remember it there was three main groups in the 88 skate scene, the ramp only powell fans and the h-street hardcore street only skaters! you would only follow which ever teams image you preffered, I was a h-street loving street skater we had no vert ramps or pools near us! finally you had the crusty dread locked backyard pool lot and drainage ditch skaters, they would only use the following products alva, dogtown and zorlac! even so everybody seemed be having a blast what ever catagorey they fell into.....;)

    • @mr_ozzio5095

Walker skateboards, Chuck Dinkins. Ha ha. I had a subscription to Thrasher magazine from 1984 until I got divorced in 2011. I have a masters degree in useless skate trivia. i don't even want to think about how long ago it was when i first saw this. i haven't watched Tony Mag flying around in years and the Jeff Pettit / Ray Simmonds sequence is still crazy. this video blew everything else out of the water in the late 80s. just as much as the visuals and aggro DIY production make this stand out, i'm realizing how much i missed the soundtrack. anyone know how all this brazilian post-punk stuff made it in? was MT or TM listening to this stuff then? the instrumental prog guitar rock that shows up in some of the ramp sequences and the brief Hensley dusk sequence are awesome... oh man and then... • @reidellis1988
      @reidellis1988 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +guiseppe M. Exactly I started using shoo goo in the mid-80's. I put it on the side of my front foot shoe(left foot cause I am regular) the first day I had them and let that shit dry for at least 24 hours. Kids at school would always ask what it was. Didn't matter they thought I was weird anyway. Being a punk rock skateboarder kid in Utah in 1985 did not make you popular. That is for sure. Fortunately for me, I had a big half pipe in my backyard and a bunch of California transplants for friends. We actually had a really good scene, all things considered.

    • @giuseppe_M
      @giuseppe_M 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +rebusd What frustrates me the most was that this vid premiered roughly at the same time as "Public Domain", but Transworld basically self-censored its review, and while going in depth on Stacy's creation, focused on irrelevancies as far as MTernasky's clearly superior documentation of the same time period was concerned (references to friggin' _popcorn_ fights? GTFOH!). The industry pressure was so transparent, it was like Rocco was being handed a lamb for the slaughter within the year. I'll shut up now... :)

      46 and right there with you. It doesn't seem like almost 30 years ago. As long as I can cruise the streets, boardslide or grind a bench, and Ollie over shit, I'm happy! Skateboarding and punk rock are engrained in me. It's who I am. The memories are priceless. Roll Forever, and SKATE AND DESTROY!

    I'm not quite for sure but I think it's by Tony Mag and some of his crew on their 4 track or something like that. They seem to be having too much fun making that jam specifically for this part of the video. I think? : )
