Your first weld is just a touch hot. But better hot than cold as long as you aren't blowing holes. Yes i was a professional welder and vocational school educated.
I saw somebody disconnect the positive first wearing a ring, and their finger was the substitute for your example of a wrench. He now has a permanent scar in place of a wedding ring. Remove the negative first.
I remember I took the positive off before the negative once. The ratchet I was using touched the brake line right under the master cylinder. It created a spark and caught the brake line on fire for a few seconds 🔥
Good job Kenny, don't be so hard on yourself regarding your welding. It holds, it's quiet, and it works at the end of the day. That's what matters. So keep on wrenching and do what you do. Blessings to you and Mrs. Wrenching! 😅 👌🏼👍🏼
When sawing off exhaust with a Sawzall consider dulling that sharp point on the blade so if the exhaust pipe pinches the blade you don't poke a hole in whatever is above the pipe.
Hi Kenny I found a good way to locate noises got a piece of garden hose about four to five foot long one end in your ear and place the other end near your location of the noise to pin point the leak works well thanks for the video keep up the good work
Good afternoon Mr Kenny, hope you're having a great weekend, looks like you're catching up on personal work lol, you haven't had time to do 😅 Hope Mrs Kenny is doing well.thani you for the video
As someone who had a catalytic stolen and is also a booger welder, i used a 3" to 3" pipe coupler when welding the two straight halves together. Was such a good fit i almost didn't weld it, i did just to secure it but just some spot welds and zero leaks, looked clean 👌
Fortunately I don't have a Chrysler product with that issue, but I sure am glad for the long life exhaust systems they're putting on vehicles these days. I got where I could put an entire exhaust system on an 83 escort in about a half hour. Glad those days are gone. Keep the good stuff coming Kenny.
I had a Mk1 VW Polo where it was a one piece system. When I collected the new one from the parts place getting it home was fun. It was too long to get in the car. So I did the sensible thing, I left the silencer sticking out the back of the boot and tied the tailgate down. I got some seriously odd looks off people as I drove it past people.
I did roughly the same thing. Only I torched out the bolts on the flange. There wasn't much if any room up in there. Then trying to get the bolts and nuts back together is quite another story...
You did a real nice job Kenny, I'm not much of a welder either, my dad, God rest him, was an ace. I think you were just a little bit hot, that thin pipe is a pain. I try to go from side to side, in half or whole circles if possible. If it doesn't leak, that is all that matters. I'm surprised you didn't locate that crack and try to sling some on that, but if you are happy, I'm happy. Have a good one.
I have been told disconnecting positive first can cause voltage spikes and can cause damage to sensitive electronics. This applies in the electronics world as well working on radio systems, computers etc.
I guarantee you they can't tell you the why, only that they heard it somewhere. The battery doesn't know which side is disconnected so neither does the car. What I have seen shops do is leave it connected but use a capacitive shunt across the battery for welding. It has two giant clips like a charger with the device between them . This was at a muffler shop.
@@InsideOfMyOwnMind Yes, I bought mine from MAC tools back in the early 90's, probably close to when they first came out. It's called the "Battery anti zap" I have used it whenever welding on vehicles or equipment but do I know if it really works? No, not really, lol.
About the battery when welding, I have heard this also but, I have seen others welding without disconnecting and they use the 'welding ground lead as close as possible to the weld to prevent the current traveling through out the vehicle' as the reason. I won't take that chance when it's so easy to disconnect in first place.
We have an LKQ neer us in Burlington. It's on the far east of Greensboro. I'm 15miles from it. I live 1 mile from CC pizza in Burlington. I could have gotten a manifold.😅
It looks like you are mig welding but I don't see the gas bottle . I use flux core wire when there's rust involved. If it slags you drag. I use a miller and their parameters are a good starting setup.
The early Toyota Landcruiser ie Gasoline models, the starter connection was directly above a glass fuel bowl, cause a spark and drop the wrench, better have a fire extinguisher handy, disconnect the battery Negative first!!! Ted from down under
Brother Kenny, I got excited the moment you pulled out the sawzall! Have you ever tried using "heat wrap"? I'm pretty sure that Mrs. Wrenching (Meg) will be happy to ride in the van again. You told me once that you have never changed a PCV valve on a 3.8 V6. Maybe when you change the brakes, you can try the PCV valve. By the way, my previous Chrysler Town and Country needed new front calipers and brake hoses. The pistons would rust on the calipers and the inside of the brake hoses would deteriorate to the point of shrinking inside. Poor brake fluid quality since it is so hydroscopic might be to blame. Oh there are so many things to do as maintenance on a vehicle!!
Eastwood Co. sells the exhaust welding clamps with holes in them like you described. I have a few of them and they're great for building custom exhaust systems. On the other hand, you could've also used a band clamp to attach the pipe at the back. They're available for both lap joints and butt joints and work well.
The flex joint helps stabilize the engine on the motor mounts. You get a firm shift with a new flex pipe. If you find a motor mount is shot, replace it, or the flex pipe gets hit with extra stress.
I've had to do this repair 3 times on my caravan with almost 400k on it. Those replacement flex pipes don't last as long as the original one but it sure beats replacing the converter. I think next time I'm going to try using a different flex pipe farther down in the exhaust to make it easier to change.
I never unhook the battery to weld and never had trouble, but then i dont own any of these new crappie cars and your weld isnt that bad a touch hot but it dont have a bunch wire sticking out and 50,000 starts
If you are welding on a vehicle.. always disconnect and short together battery cables.. voltage spikes from welding can kill processors... radio included... had a friend told to disconnect the battery on a friends car.. he didn't... did his welding .. no start.. dead computer..
I’ve heard some modern vehicles you don’t want to direct short the cables together because it can damage the computer somehow. I think I heard that on a Scotty Kilmer video. Don’t know if it’s true.
You could have put a hose clamp around the pipe to keep it in position and attach the flex pipe to the other pipe and in the cat and tack it, and it would be a perfect fit
Couple sayings I learned a long time ago, grinders and paint, make a welder what he aint! And if your not a good welder,be a good grinder. People are to stuck un weld profile and appearence, most pretty welds are not the best, they lack penetration, not that they arent strong, just not as strong!
You have a Die Hard battery do you know they die harder keep up the hard work making videos and have a blessed day today you should have replaced the manifold when you had it apart 😂😂
Q: I have a 2011 2.0L dodge caliber. When I start it up, it sounds like a truck, and it's all exhaust, After 2 min it hums like a kitten. I'm assuming it's a exhaust gasket. Do I need to worry about it? or just deal with it? It doesn't really bother me. Thank you in advance for considering my question!
Damn that overhead weld looks like crap!! lol! I always put on leathers so I’m not thinking about my burning flesh as I weld. Makes it go a little smoother. Zap zap, let r’ cool, zap zap some more.
Is Kenny experimenting on his video duration? He went from ten minutes to almost two hours and back to one hour? I need to know how much popcorn to make!
Kenny, I would of preferred to buy a cheap Ebay exhaust which comes in sections for easy installation. Granted first weld your Cat flex pipe first. Time is money and that extra time you're spending cutting/Welding that rusted exhaust is not cost effective nor wise.
Disconnecting the battery does nothing to protect onboard electronics from stray voltage supplied by your welder . Remember that the ground wires running into all the modules are still connected to the car's frame , so they each become a potential path to ground for stray voltage. It doesn't hurt to disconnect at the battery , but the MOST important thing you can do is to insure that your WELD GROUND is attached firmly and as close as possible to where you plan to weld. then DON'T get careless with your stinger when moving around between welds . Try not to strike any unintended arcs . The closer the better , because even if ALL the wires are disconnected , the current coming from the welder can and will melt wires that accidentally become "live" .
Put your tool and lawn and garden equipment lithium batteries in the refrigerator after using them for 10 minutes. Then take them out and plug them into the charger. The turn around is quicker and battery life is longer. Hot batteries don't recharge quickly and can kill their lifespan.
The first Weld looks like it’s too hot. Amps too high, but I was a nuclear weld inspector not a welder, but they wouldn’t pass lol but hey, as long as it keeps the gasses sealed and doesn’t crack on you than you’ll be fine. It’s nothing critical, structural or anything. The second weld looked ALMOST like it wasn’t hot enough and not much penetration, but hard to tell from the angle and what you showed on the butt weld. God bless~
You unhook the neg first and reconnect pos first is to keep from spiking the ECM. That is what Chrysler school alway's told us. I have never unhooked pos when changing ALT .
Just love to watch american cars, which most is petrol cars. Is not the case in eu. Most of the cars are diesel ones in here. And modern diesels comes with egr, dpf, AdBlue systems. What makes car sophisticated and hard/pricey to fix. On other hand there is great mpg while have great torque and hp
It would have been easier to place one mark on the old part and one on the cat before cutting it off, and then align the new part with the old. At least thats what I would have done! Oh well, as long as the finished part works as it should
Welding is good enough some really nice looking weld are junk and yours well hold was a mechanic for years before I lied my way into weld welding 30 years ago lol
Kenny, worked for years in industry both as a steamfitter/pipefitter and an Industrial Instrument Mechanic (industrial controls). When welding on equipment with sensitive electronics you disconnect power like you did here. The other thing to do is to connect your welder’s ground clamp as close to your weld as you can. Did you tighten your motor mount
it was loose the last time i saw it on video
Yeah, Kenny no beer until motor mount is done!

Another fine video! I weld like u do. It holds, but not
pretty. Have a good weekend.

Great video Kenny ! Looks good to me on your welding job. !

😳 that must have been crazy! Thanks for watching & keep wrenching 🔧
Kenny’s chop shop with the Sawzall.
Kenny, did you remember to tighten the motor mount bolt?
Good Video.

Hey Kenny, you can film welding, lots of guys on here do no problem. For exhaust your welding is just fine, not a beauty contest.
Definitely a precision mechanic. Wow slasher!😊
Did you use flux core rod or gas when welding?
I've had to do this repair 3 times on my caravan with almost 400k on it. Those replacement flex pipes don't last as long as the original one but it sure beats replacing the converter. I think next time I'm going to try using a different flex pipe farther down in the exhaust to make it easier to change.
Lisle makes a really nice set of exhaust hangar pliers. It's a sturdier design than those. I've had them for years and they work excellently.
Yes, what about the motor mount?
Did you tighten up your motor mount?
I didn’t notice, did you tighten the motor mount
They make full band clamps to eliminate the need for welding.
I never unhook the battery to weld and never had trouble, but then i dont own any of these new crappie cars and your weld isnt that bad a touch hot but it dont have a bunch wire sticking out and 50,000 starts
Need to WD40 the spare tire cable hanger??
I saw the motor motor mount bolt did not get tightened down
Old add electrolyte batteries also produced explosive gasses, so it was for safety reasons #1 when I was taught .
Motor mount Bolt?
Kenny, your angle grinder.. is it Astro?? Thanks
Yes, it is! Good eye. Thanks for watching & keep wrenching

Hey Kenny how come there is no one else in the shop . do you work odd hours?
Personal vehicle- shop probably not open today.
Spark near hydrogen gas is one thing i heard. Maybe thats for jumper cables.
It looks like you got good penatration with the weild.

you would get better welds if you clean the rust and dirt off first.

7:43 Hey Har du et link til den skæreskive
You did okay
Sure is different from when I put dual exhaust on my 1959 Chevy.
Hell, Kenny, there’s guys that will pay good money to make their car sound like that! 😆
