From my tent to yours. Well done mate. Great fun. I’m still up on Arran. Have had a blast (literally) just like you! Bivvy and Expedition antenna and IC705. Brilliant! Thanks for making this video Nathan.

Cheers Tom. Not to over egg any puddings, but you really did inspire me to get back in to this outdoors lark. I'm lightweight for the moment, but I may grow some and manage a lap of Arran with 20kg on my back eventually. Maybe. Very much looking forward to your debrief video. p.s. I do hope you got a pic of Pladda Island as promised :D

If you use a USB cable to the 705, you get two com ports, one can be used for GPS, the other is the cat control. Using one of the many gps clock apps you can sync the windows clock (or whatever device) to the gps clock on the 705. You can always then unplug the cable and go back to using the brilliant 705 wifi data connection with the icom remote app.

I found this out after the event. Yes, good tip. The /p laptop has a GPS time sync program on it now.

Thanks for sharing your experiences Nathan. It is possible to output the Icom705 satellite time/date data over a usb cable to automatically update the pc clock without the InterNet. I do it on both Windows and Linux. Search Google or TH-cam for BktTimesync if using Linux use gpsd. The TH-cam videos by LY2H or VK3FS will walk you through the Windows + Icom 705 setup. 73 Glen G0SBN

Ah, that's perfect. Thank you. Exactly what I wanted! I'm sure I read that the IC705 doesn't output NMEA, but I was clearly wrong. I've just tested it. This will save so much hassle when out in the field doing digi. :)

Looks like you had fun, made some good contacts and learnt some useful stuff. Well done. I am going camping week after next. In my VW T5 on a site in the New Forest 🙂

A T5 in the new forest sounds perfect. I really want to sneak a wild camp down there. T5: More comfort and, I presume, heating? Just keep those SWMPS turned off, and enjoy the view of the stars! The first night I stayed up for hours and hours just looking at the sky. It's surprising how many satellites you can spot when you've nothing else to do.

Top Vid Nathan. Just for info. Use JTSync for Digi modes when you dont have any external clock sync reference 🙂

Cheers Jimbo. I did actually find exactly the program I was speculating in the vid. It's called GPSTime and takes NMEA from the IC705 and sets the windows clock. I like the idea behind that JTSync though, I'll download that one.

I wondered what the reflection was with the Sheep. Thought it was a stream but realised it was your car at the end. SSB v Digital. Less kit for SSB, rig, power, antenna, paper for notes.

Hello mate, just seen this video - Epic! You're much braver than me for /P operations, I have converted a Van for this sort of stuff however fair play to you. Hope to catch you on the air one evening when I'm out in the wilds, I do tend to make videos but as of yet not had the confidence to upload them to TH-cam.
    Cheers and 73

Hi Rob. Thank you. Get those vids uploaded, I'd love to watch some van portable stuff :) I'll be doing a bit more /p when the tourist season calms down a bit. It would be great to catch you on the air - especially in the cooler months when you can tell me how warm the blown air diesel heating system in the van is while I'm in a tent thinking it'd be nice to be in a van :D

    Tie me Kangaroo down, sport.
Pretty windy out there! Any concerns about lightning?

Not on that day, though many years ago I was camping near the top of Sca Fell, and in the middle of the night there was a flash of light upon the tent. I jumped up to unzip the entrance and see who was out there with a headtorch, but before I got to the zip, the crack of thunder came. That was an unpleasant game of waiting for the next hour.

@@nathanw851 Wow - too exciting. During that unpleasant waiting game, did you try to determine if the lightning storm was getting closer or moving farther away by comparing light/sound delay time? (Lol, that's just for some panic distraction/entertainment.) Thunder is scary enough, but electricity can warm your heart, especially if that zipper is metal; just rising up and touching it just provided another DC resistive or inductive path right through your body and then to ground... (Become a half-baked Ham by standing on one foot?) Maybe it's best to just curl into a small ball and pray to remain capacitive and very low on the Smith Chart. Take care of you and yours on all of life's adventures!
