I love his paintings and illustrations eventhough I did not know the name of the painter. Btw, I am not American. I love the way he was picturing people. It's kind of funny and serious look at the same time.

I’ve been a fan as long as I can remember, and I’m almost 69 yrs old. Saw this film in 1976 in Norwalk, CT playing at a retrospective of Boy’s Scout magazine covers. To this day, I’ll see another Norman Rockwell painting I’d never seen before. He was so prolific. Lucky me, as a kid I lived across the street from the art editor for the Saturday Evening Post, and stopped by often to chat, hear stories about Norman Rockwell, and see originals from many golden age illustrators including Norman Rockwell. After formal education and art school, and working as an illustrator in the NYC area for 45 years, I’m oil painting en plein air these days. It seems a popular thing to do. What an inspiration Norman Rockwell was to so many generations of artists and illustrators. He alone possibly kept ‘the American Spirit’ alive through turbulent and daunting times. God Bless America.🇺🇸🎨❤️

This video inspired me to take a visit to Stockbridge last Saturday and examine Norman Rockwell’s life. I first visited the Norman Rockwell Museum and saw many of his original paintings. I also looked at his studio on the property. I then went to Stockbridge cemetery to look at his grave and put a small stick on top of his headstone. If that wasn’t enough, I took a trip into downtown Stockbridge to examine the scenes from this video. Coincidentally, the first people I asked about Rockwell were two women who somewhat knew Rockwell when they were young. The two women were born in 1957 and 1959. They recall seeing Norman Rockwell riding his bike just as it was depicted in the video. The woman born in 1959 was a waitress at the Red Lion Inn and stated that Norman and his wife, Molly, would eat dinner there nearly every night. She recalled that Norman acted just like everyone else in the neighborhood and never asked for special treatment. He was just your every day guy. Norman and Molly had their own special table at the restaurant, and the woman was nearly brought to tears when she recalled that Molly continued to eat at that same table following Norman’s passing. The two ladies pointed me towards Norman’s old house, which was just around the corner. The house is privately owned, but no car was there so I decided to trespass and walk around the property. I even looked through the windows to see what it was like. When looking through the side window, I saw a door open and one of the rooms had Saturday Evening Post covers covering the wall. Obviously the current owner is a a big fan. Norman’s street is much busier today than in this video. The trees that were across the street are now gone and replaced with local business. The house looks nearly the same, except the shudders around the windows are gone. All in all, I had a great in depth trip exploring Stockbridge, visiting the museum, visiting Norman’s grave, trespassing on his old property, and talking to people who somewhat knew him.

Unless you see his paintings in person, you can't know how innovative his methods were. He drew with pencil on an oil painting, he glued a fake Santa Claus beard to a canvas, and put a safety pin through a canvas. He mixed sand with his paint to produce a stucco wall. When his show came to Chicago, the Art Institute didn't have room for it, so we saw it at the Historical Society. Hang a light bulb in front of a blank canvas and they'll find a place for it.

Norman Rockwell was a person of his time, but forward thinking too. He cared about the young and wanted them to have their dreams, even when times were hard. He left us too soon.

Spectacular genius...capturing an America nelpved and long gone. Imagine if there was video around during the Renaissance...here's Michelangelo carving the David...there Leonardo painting the Last Supper...hi Leo....but we do have Norman...on film...wonderful

It’s sad that this has so few watches and likes. The 21st Century needs a lot more Norman Rockwell.

In a media saturated world…magazine covers, and film are outdated now,
the digital age though still makes easy access for such a video as this of historic guys
like Rockwell who most folks have never seen this film…
Different time, and artistic style, but still appreciated. Thanks.
If Rockwell was still alive, odds are,he would be painting digitally his subjects in hilarious
scenes of Americans constantly on phones and social media. I don’t think he would have a good opinion on what the”hippie” movement did to the US, nor woke politics and the despair of 2023. Frankly some of his pantings may get cancelled in social media today for being not diverse enough…lol.

Really fascinating look at Rockwell in his own words. 1972 was the year after The Saturday Evening Post was revived after a short hiatus from 1969-1971. It's continued ever since, and I have a subscription. It's bimonthly, so 6 issues per year, and is still a great publication. Rockwell would be proud!

@Jas Dong The song is in a waltz style and is called "Faces". It was written specifically for this documentary. I'd say it's unlikely a recording exists outside the film. Kander also did the music score.

today Rockwell has become incredibly famous, but nobody knows that he is Rockwell, since his works have been used to train artificial intelligence models.
