  • Anomie - there are two usages of this term
    1. a societal condition in which there is too little social regulation (meaning there are poorly defined or enforced social norms, uncertain social values, inconsistent and uncertain rewards; life is generally unpredictable; condition that is often associated with dramatic social change such as economic distress, political turmoil, or war; this first usage is how Durkheim introduced the term: anomie = too little social regulation)
    2. a personal condition or state of being that results from too little social regulation in society (a feeling of hopelessness, aimlessness, and despair; a general sense that "nothing matters," or "nothing matters")
Also - anomie is described by Emile Durkheim as a characteristic condition of modern social arrangements, a symptom of modernity, if you will; one of Durkheim's most famous works demonstrates the relationship between societal conditions and suicide caused by anomie (anomic suicide)

society is skyrocketing into this condition with suicides rising. First we had agricultural then industy--now we have transitioned that we have nothing and most everyone has been replaced and is not needed and a tiny percentage have everything locked up. Those working now--are working like goddam hell just to get by knowing each job shuts down and throws everyone out every couple of years. The situation is not good.

Can someone please help me to explain how/why this theory relates to the abundance of of opioid abuse??

It's a breakdown, when those who once thrived say fuck it.
They see the derailing of the train and it is unobtainable to them to get back on the track. So it's like...fuck it, it's too late in their eyes and feel they are at the point of no return, jumping into the abyss so to speak.
True of career criminals, addictions, and many suicides.
Teaching the concept of Anomie could be a light at the end of a tunnel.

Situating the cause of anomie as a lack of social REGULATION is not what the theory is about, not what it's founders imagined, and a very dangerous way of mis-explaining this concept.
