Town Hall: A look back at the Blizzard of '77

  • While the Blizzard of '77 hit on January 28 of that year, it was months in the making.
We'll start a look back at the Blizzard of '77 with Lake Erie. It often won't freeze until February. But that winter, it was frozen by December 14. That's because November and December were bitter cold.
Leading up to the storm, the temperature had not risen above freezing for 34 straight days. And from the time the lake froze until the blizzard, we got 93.5 of snow.
That led to a deep snow pack on top of the frozen lake.
Same story in the city. Buffalo had snow for 28 straight days leading up to the storm.
There was nowhere to put it. So you had tons of snow on the lake, a 37-inch snow depth piled in the city, and here comes the blizzard.
Howling winds and blowing snow that started exactly 45 years ago brought Western New York to a standstill for days and killed nearly two dozen people.

I was 15 growing up in NJ, a sophomore in high school still devastated about one of my favorite bands (Lynyrd Skynyrd) plane crash on October 20th. I helped my parents dig out so my father could get to work and then went sledding at the Riverton Country Club golf course off of Golf road. Good ol'days, no responsibilities, no bills except gas for my RM 125.

Oh yeah I remember this. I was a kid in a little town called North Boston New York. Couldn't see anything including my parents. It was a hell of a thing.

As a kid , it was awesome. We would always listen to the radio on school mornings when there was snow. Would get so excited if you heard all Buffalo schools are closed today. Unfortunately most of the time it was the religious schools that were closed

I recall the hearing the news talking about how RR's were pulling Coal Cars out of years of storage and heading to Buffalo to fill and move the cars much further south to dump the snow. See if you can find any info on this. I realize the Blizzard of 78 was bad, and again so many of us had to dig that one out, but the Blizzard of 77 lasted like 3-4 days with extreme winds. Every once in a while, Mother Nature pulls its sources from all directions into one giant storm. Seems to me we also had a blizzard around January 17, 1977. I could recall having to dig out deep snow less than two weeks apart in 77. And it was a cold, cold winter.

I know a good metal can heater hack: All you gotta do is stuff a metal can with toilet paper, douse the paper with alcohol, then light it.

500 years ago, people would've said that the Blizzard of '77 was God's Just Punisment against the Wicked & Sinful City of Buffalo. Was that true ? I'll let YOU be the judge of that. 😊

Look into recently declassified cia files, about how (during the cold war), the ussr tested/used Scalar weapons on the US (possibly, others too?). With one, trying to effect the weather. By using a Scalar weapon that dropped the tempurature to zero (in a specific location).
It'll wake you up, to a part of the 'cold war' you were probably unaware of (kept secret by disinfomation). These weapons can have various effects. One of them, is Time dilation. This isn't star trek, this is technology of the now. And many countries research it in secret ...
