You can see how hyman Roth said how he admired “Arnold Rothstein” who fixed the 1919 World Series and was head of the Jewish mob. If that’s his hero, it tells what kind of person hyman Roth truly was and he should never be trusted.

@@philipampofo6435 because even among gangsters, there’s still a “code” and there has to be some level of trust to cooperate and do business. Especially in Vito’s time of the mob.
Roth admired a cheater, and manipulator like Arnold Rothstein, which told Vito that Roth was a snake who’d betray you, the second he could. Vito did some business, but he wouldn’t trust him for important things.

@@Chutneybhai but gangsters are 'inherently' bad people. Not sure you can talk about bad or good when you are involved in such activities as a career. Of course Hollywood has presented us with a sanitisied version of the 'honourable' gangster, a anti-hero of some sorts. This is why I love OUATIA, it blew that concept away and dug deeper and showed them for what they were.

It would be interesting to see Hyman Roth also as a recurring character in the young Vito Corleone story. An ally of the father (never trusted, although) and an enemy of the son.

  • @ilcanalediwilly

It was a fatal and huge mistake to cut this scene. It was the meeting point between the two plots of the film: the past (Vito) and the future (Micheal) through the figure of Roth. You could see what Roth tells Michael. A mistake considering Roth is seen when Vito and Clemenza leave the shop. Coppola should put it back.

I like the theory that the role of frank pentageli was supposed to be for clemenza, but they changed plans due to problems with clemenzas actor. Then Michael would have killed tessio, hyman roth and Clemenza, so all of the early friends of his father and his own brother.

The first person we see Vito with at the theatre is Genco. He knew who was who and his father and family must have stories about Sicily too. They name the olive oil business after him. Clemenza is the guy who introduces Vito to theft. Clemenza basically gets them in trouble for not paying Fanucci protection money. That’s 2 strikes for Fanucci against Vito and Clemenza wasn’t thinking about the opportunity that existed. Basically the same way Michael became Boss in Godfather 1 is the way Vito rises to power, he gave Fanucci an offer he couldn’t refuse.
