  • With a career of elite level mountain bike racing behind her, Lee continues to test herself by riding longer and further than she ever has before. Only these days, she knows herself and her motivations for doing so much better.
She tells the story of an epic multi-day, ultra-endurance mountain bike race through some of Scotland's most wild and remote terrain. The Highland Trail 550 Race provides an interesting narrative to explore the ways people behave differently under stressful conditions and ultimately asks the question "is there a different way to succeed?".
Lee Craigie is 38 years old and lives in the Highlands of Scotland. She competed for 10 years as an elite level mountain bike racer, representing GB in the World Championships and Scotland in the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
Lee is also a trained child and adolescent psychotherapist, who uses outdoor adventurous activities therapeutically to help socially excluded young people feel better about themselves.
In 2015, tired of the way the media and cycling industry portrays athletic women, Lee co-founded The Adventure Syndicate; a collective of women who do extraordinary things by bike and who aim to inspire, encourage and enable more women and girls to challenge themselves on what they think they might be capable of. Through The Adventure Syndicate, Lee now writes, delivers talks, makes films, runs training courses and, most importantly, continues to undertake her own ultra endurance self-supported bike adventures in an effort to remain curious, engaged and humble.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

The way she narrated such a long journey in a very smooth and entertaining way...no repetition, no pauses...so smooth and fun to listen to. She is indeed a great story teller and a woman to look up to. Bless your good soul. stay safe

I want you to know that I cried seeing your TEDtalk Ride like a Girl because it is so inspiring. Although I’m a 52 year old man it really hit me.
In my early youth I was more of a bookworm then a sporty boy and I hated gym classes and sports because I was never good at it. I was that slender boy that was always picked last when teams for gym at school were chosen because I threw balls or climbed robes ‘like a girl. So I started to hate everything sports related and sat quietly in the corner with a book.
Last year I ditched my car and bought a bike for commuting and groceries and the psysical exercise was hard but last year ended with almost 9.000 km on the odometer of my bike computer. Daily distances are growing but stormy and rainy days in the flatlands of Holland can still be hard but I’ll succeed.
What your Ted-talk told me is that I can loose the trauma of being ‘like a girl’ isn’t so bad; it is something to be proud of. I really hope that your talk is seen by non-manly bookish boys like the one I was and that the next time they are laughed at because they are ‘like a girl’ they picture you and laugh back or smile.

Lee is a natural story teller, a smart woman and a great cyclist who thinks a lot. I plan to share this with my non-cycling colleagues, for the collaborative perspective she offers.

I find I keep returning to Lee's TH-cam clips. Enthralling, captivating, engrossing, inspiring, uplifting, motivational. She reminds me why as a boy as soon as I got on my bike it was magical with that feeling of freedom and unlimited potential of adventure. That feeling is still as strong today 50 years later.

damm that was tedious. Imagine being on a bike ride through the Highlands, loving the scenery , nature and you catch up with her, and she wants to talk Religion, Politics, and Feminism, which I suspect she knows nothing about anything about all 3, damm she must even bore the Animals. Scotland has great cyclists, Hoy, Beaumont, Jenny Graham and they put this wet dishrag up.
