Have the SB2 for the lower backpressure and works very well on a DD Block II. It's still a little over-gassed but I don't really get much back in my face even when shooting indoors. DD Block II FSP with 3 prong, TA31 Acog, PLHv2 w/ modbutton and SF DS00 tailcap. Gotta love Block II
I just found your channel and I really appreciate the information being shared as well as the laid back way of communicating it. There's so much forced "humor" and antics in gun videos these days and as a younger guy I really value this style of presentation. Thanks for the knowledge.
I appreciate you sharing the thought process on the redundancy of using the 1x on an LPVO when using an offset dot for 100m and in. I always thought, “why not use a 2-10x when you already have an offset dot?” And your explanation is something so simple I overlooked it. Great video!
Fantastic enjoyed this one Jeff. It's been 20+ years since I was in green, 12 years British Army, enjoyed every minute. I agree the SA80 was 11 pounds, sight and loaded at 30 inch long it took its toll on the younger lads. Respect to all you guys.
Fellow left handed ar user here. My preference for bolt release is the magpul bad lever. After inserting mag, the right hand can palm strike to the end of the bad lever, allowing you to mimic the standard manual of arms. The nice side bonus is that it makes it easier for the left hand to lock the bolt to rear as well.
Great info Jeff, always good to get more of your perspective. Looking forward to you making a video on the history of the m9 in SF whenever you get the time!
i got into the fancy stuff. i own LmT, radian, daniel defense, bcm, adm. pretty much all of it. with all the gucci stuff i got rid of some uppers and decided to build a block 1….the block 1s and 2s just work and they always will. overtime ive learned that simple is always better.
He dude thanks, for your service, and being an awesome Dad! I look up to that a lot as a Bravo. I had transition issues as civi, and Dad, and I learn so much from your genuine content to be better. Not just on firearms, but seeing your history as family man! Much love my man. Not all heroes wear capes brother.
Fellow southpaw here. I have an old smith and Wesson m&p sport ii which I have applied the stukas touch to (albeit not exactly due to parts availability or budget). I got to run this carbine yesterday and wow! It’s almost like the big green machine knows a thing or two about rifles!
The cloning community is..... Weird lol. They will fuck you in the ass if you don't have the right markings, hell they'll rip you a new asshole if the pins don't look right
I saw a guy recently review the VCOG talking about how its not a good optic because its heavier than most LPVOs and other little nit picks like that. Its funny seeing a lot of channels who dont have military or LEO experience make reviews on optics like these and say they are bad. At the end of the review he commented "well one good thing about these is that they are the toughest LPVO that you can get but I dont think that makes the difference". Your setup is a lot like mine on my combat rotation and it never failed unlike my ELCAN. TBH i have no idea why the Army as a whole hasn't adopted it.
I just got a M-lok upper for my XCR-L set up. I own 2 quad rail uppers. I have to admit I prefer the quad rails. However, I'm not hiking ridge to ridge w/60lbs+ of gear and equipment on my back either. Great vid...
I inadvertently made this rifle recently lol little changes I prefer a vertical grip and my optic is from PA and the mount is Bobro Eng. lower is radian so I don’t have a magwell. The other lower it used to have had an HRF Concepts one. Also I don’t have the offset dot. The protective wings is a nice touch
Just recently discovered your videos through a comment you made on reddit awhile back, great stuff. 21:14 answered my question before I could ask it, I was curious if your accounts were named after the divebomber. Great choice, one of the coolest planes of WW2.
@@ModernTacticalShooting Me too, there were so many technological advancements during that war, it's insane. They have a really cool museum at Fort Lewis (or at least they used to) that has some WW2 stuff. Not much aviation related exhibits though.
A. I feel like there should be an MLOK bomb rack for a Stuka rifle, and B. I enjoyed the explanation of careful mag changes versus quick ones. That stuff is important.
We used Dual Optics back in 2006. My unit got issued ACOG's with J-Point red dots(IIRC, we were the first in the Army to get this Unit Wide). The ACOG's were non-fiber optic and they used the Crosshair reticle instead of the Chevron. This was the predecessor to the ACOG+RMR setup the USMC would later go on to adopt. The Concept was great at the time, Sadly though, the J-Point was all that was available at the time and is a seriously garbage sight. No adjustments, had to remove to replace the battery, was Always On, battery life of about 2 days. In the end we all just adapted to using the ACOG only, even for close quarters. Takes practice, but it eventually just becomes natural. We left the J-Points on but that was because we weren't allowed to remove them. "Made us look cool" apparently, lol.
Have you kept up with MRDSs and if so, what would you use in place of the J Point? I lived through all of this as well from irons to Aimpoints, ACOG NSN, Eotechs, to LPVOs.
@@LRRPFco52 TBH, I've only kept up a little. It sounds like pretty much all of them will eventually have issues when place on a pistol. The vast majority sound like they do fine on a rifle. I, personally, have a bias against Vortex Red Dots as I've consistently had them fail for me on both rifles and pistols(So far, I've had good luck with the Strike Eagle I've been playing with for the past couple years now, but it is a sample size of One). But, that's me. Aimpoint makes good stuff, I just don't like the idea of having to send it to Sweden if/when it fails(even puppies get born dead sometimes). Trijicon seems to be consistently improving their stuff from lessons learned. Personally, My main thing with modern MRDS's is access to the battery and known reliability. Almost none come without adjustability anymore. An enclosed emitter is a plus and it looks like the market is slowly swaying that way too. I've been playing a little with the Holosun 507, but I got that on a whim to try out and on sale. So, I'd say: Ease of battery access. Ease of warranty repairability. Reliability. Sight Adjustment. Enclosed emitter. NOTE: this may change the more I play with MRDS's. I will say this, it is like a Cheat Code for shooting pistols. The reason the J-Point was used all those years ago is because the RMR didn't exist. The USMC RCO setup they would later adopt was a massive improvement all the way around on what we tested. Our setup was a Army Experiment. See what happens when you give EVERYONE an ACOG and a MRDS. Concept was pulled from competition shooting at the time, IIRC.
@@jik294 Great points. I'm the same way about battery access on MRDSs. Love the durability of the RMR, but having to remove it to replace the power source is no Bueno, though I understand the engineering trade-off for compactness. Mainly because I live in the Mountain West region now, I've only been using a lot of MPVOs and LPVOs on ARs, plus I rarely shoot 5.56 anymore after getting into 6.5 Grendel. 12" Grendel is awesome compared even with 20-24" .224" bores. Effects on-target are night/day, but still an easy sight picture to self-spot.
Acog with Dr or point the orgianl dual optic saw my 1st one in late 2005. MRDS garbage seen too many break with teams guys. The one I used, lens coating came off was permanently blurry, and switched back to DR sight
Loved the video. Would you consider doing a video about your hearing protection while deployed versus the modern consumer ear pro like the walkers that you featured?
honestly wonder if the ris3 wouldve done just as well or better in combat. seems like the durability is there. nice weight savings, mid length gas. im going to get a ris3 soon and stick a fixed frontsight on it with a flip up rear and beat the piss out of it: see what it can do
@20:12 and that's not even taking into account the weight of the ammo itself in the magazine- let alone in the spare magazines dispered across the plate carrier.
20:03 you just know that the weight issue is going to lead to SIG! (the American imitation version of Schweizerische Industrie Gesellschaft 😉) to propose a titanium upper or some other insanity so they can charge the US Government $20,000 per rifle rather than just ~$4,000 for the base 6.8mm gun.
Thank for the video and breakdown Jeff! One thing that wasn’t addressed much that I was curious about was the use of the surefire suppressor. Did you feel that the additional length of the suppressor was unwieldy or not worth the added weight penalty? Especially if in use with vehicles or moving on patrols? Another thing I wanted to add was maybe you can do a video on the history of the SPR within SF.
Do you think you can make a video about the SIG Rattler in the future? It seems like the pipeline towards the evolution of the UMP-45 and MP5, in it's use case.

Hey Jeff, I’m curious about your thoughts on arm fatigue from different positions. Did you find yourself bracing off of cover or going prone in the fire fights that you participated in (not counting the ones you were providing leadership/comms) or shooting a majority of the time unsupported? Does rifle weight with optics, lights, and lasers really add up when in combat and engaging at distance, or is it negligible because you are firing supported?
When I see any video by Mr. Gurwitch I give it a "Like" regardless if I actually watch it then and there or not. Automatic "Likes" for a high speed low drag large caliber professional like Mr. Gurwitch.
The carbine being a PDW is something civillians arent going to be able to understand very well. We acquire carbines to be our primary weapons, we dont have access to larger weapons like MK19s and M240s. Its sort of the only thing i have against so many civvies rocking Mock18s, so much sacrifice to effectiveness for dubious benefit.
Counter point, as a civilian in a city, I’m much more likely to need a rifle for a sub-300 meter shot. I’m more likely to find myself wanting something handier inside of a vehicle or a building, and I’d be far more likely to break contact if I was engaged in a long range fight anyway. This is all kind of in the realm of fantasy, though.
Hi Jeff. Thanks so much for the no nonsense info, based on long experience! I’ve built my old colt 6920 into a SOPMOD 2 frankenbuild. Went with a “Troy Delta” rail. Not quite sure how I feel about it. It’s a little flexi, but seems to work. Have you seen or used one? Any opinion it? Thanks again for the great content!
Wow. That’s a variety of different builds for sure. If I was more into cloning, that would be the death of my savings account. Thanks again for the great content.
Great video, Jeff. As the means come about I find myself unintentionally building something similar to the stuka setup, and you’ve sold me on adding a red dot to my rifle. My next purchase however is a lvpo, would it be better to get one that is first focal plane or second focal plane?
Thanks! If you don't use backup irons, why keep front sight post then? Were the low profile gas blocks not available or good/reliable enough back then?
Did you ever use any sort of lens covers on your VCOG while in country? I’m debating on keeping them on my NX8. I like the protection, but they’re clunky and slow down getting the rifle into action.
Can you give your experience on the differences of a suppressor on the MK18 and no suppressor on the 14.5? It seems the benefits of a suppressor would be helpful but is it worth the extra length and weight on the 14.5?
@dfed0530 it is worth it, numerous times I shot at threats and they had no idea where I was. Yes gun not quiet, but suppresor cuts out all muzzle blast.
I have a set of laRue Tactical LT 152 RIS II Scope mounts I bought back in 08’ and never used. I had no idea about them at the time. Their 1.2” In height, and I’m guessing had something to do with the RIS ll rail, (FSB?) but still don’t really know the story. Were these ever used in theater? I look at the Block ll as a must own system now..
I know you talked abut upgrading the optic but I would really be interested in hearing about a complete overhall and what you would change about everything else on the rifle. Is the m4 barrel sub moa? I like my 1:8 fluted 5R rifled stainless steel barrel. On a good day I have gotten .5 moa. Would you change the barrel specs, flashlight, keep the fsp, etc?
Those Norgon-style ambi mag releases are neat and tidy but you need long fingers to stand a chance of using it, and because the leverage sucks the force to actuate it requires your freakishly long digits to also be swole AF 🤨

Great video, Jeff. As the means come about I find myself unintentionally building something similar to the stuka setup, and you’ve sold me on adding a red dot to my rifle.
My next purchase however is a lvpo, would it be better to get one that is first focal plane or second focal plane?
@unsmote1560 Well most would say 1st focal plane, Now that I own both 1st and second, I prefer second plane. Set size reticle just works for me.
@@ModernTacticalShooting Thanks, the input is noted and appreciated.
Did you do the commando mission out of Fenty?
Awesome rifle, ngl i just copied your mk18 and block 2 for my AR setups
@flopus7 Yes I was out of FOB Fenty but at that time 2014, I was not on the commando mission. I did commando mission 2015 Dahlke
@@ModernTacticalShooting I thought yall were the coolest people alive as a private. Extremely jealous everytime I heard the test fire pit
I’m sure that would grind my gears too if my rounds fell short of the target lol, love my Mk18, but it’s not my go-to for a good reason 👍🏻
Jeff, did you ever had issues with sand or debris getting into the open emitter offset red dot? If so, how did you mitigate it in the field?
@@tiiiimmmmmm Not dust but rain has been a problem.
@@ModernTacticalShooting thanks for the reply!
Great to see you again man! I was worried you disappeared from YT. What kind of BCG did you say that was again?
@@Mjdeben FERFRANS, I have a full video on FERFRANS rifles
@@ModernTacticalShooting thanks!
Jeff! you running anything night vision wise these days as a civilian now?
Nope, I'm cheap
Thanks!
If you don't use backup irons, why keep front sight post then? Were the low profile gas blocks not available or good/reliable enough back then?
@@a_shuchu_601 I was not issued a non front site post version until half way through my last tour did not feel like changing.
@@ModernTacticalShooting thanks for reply!
Horshoe dot or Cross hair 55 grain BDC? Just curious? You said it would sometimes cover the head of people at distance.

Did you ever use any sort of lens covers on your VCOG while in country? I’m debating on keeping them on my NX8. I like the protection, but they’re clunky and slow down getting the rifle into action.
@@w.w.9047 Never used lens covers
Hey Sarge? What sling do you have on your rifle? Two point or three point? Cheers 😎🎸🍺🍺

Could you have used your own privately purchased upper on a deployment? Or was that not allowed?

You had me at block lol
Larue was very popular, not issued but was purchased by some SF using team funds.
@@ModernTacticalShooting Cool, thanks. Looks like just the excuse I need to get myself into a Block II so those LT 152 mounts have a proper home..
Barrell 1.5 moa is about the best you get with 77gr.
Those Norgon-style ambi mag releases are neat and tidy but you need long fingers to stand a chance of using it, and because the leverage sucks the force to actuate it requires your freakishly long digits to also be swole AF 🤨
