I was at The Post in Ferndale in 2002 with Lou... I walked thru the kitchen to the bar where Federov was standing... He looked at me and said do you want to hold the cup? Handed me the Stanley Cup which was full of beer, vodka, and god knows what else. I held it up while standing on the bar and dumped it over everyone who was there. Federov gave me a hug (I’ve never met him before) and I handed him back the cup. Coolest fucking night ever!! Love Federov ever since
As a Detroit native, I grew up watching this guy dominate in the 90's and early 2000's. All my friends had his number 91 jersey. I remember in the old 90's Sega/Nintendo NHL games we were always trying to get the puck to Fedorov because he was so insanely overpowered compared to the other players, and rightfully so lol.
Red Wings fan here. Fedorov was great! I loved them all Yzerman, Fedorov, Lidstrom, Holmstrom, Shanahan, Draper, McCarty and all those guys. The best and strongest team ever. No one will ever forget those red hot Red Wings years and all those great players they had. A true super star team!
Mike Ilitch was a stand up man. I read a story after he passed that he paid Rosa Parks rent for more than a decade and kept it quiet. She was poor down and out at the time, was robbed and assaulted and he stepped up to make sure she had a home. Amazing guy. A friend of his told the story after he passed away. And very cool here when Fedorov said 'and to my Captain, Steve Yzerman'... respect. Those are my thoughts, thank you.
I was 10 when Bobby Orr and the B's won the cup, I was a hockey player until 30 years old, hockey's been a huge part of my life, Fedorov was in my eyes, one of the best two way players ever, amazing skating ability, my own son at 10 years old asked for a Fedorov jersey, even though we're Boston area guys, special player, I still miss him flying around the rink.
You know he's amazing when even Gretzky said he was in awe of him. Man Sergei could skate like the wind and stick handle in a phone booth and had a rocket for a shot. One of the most complete players of all time

Man that Russian 5 was the most spectacular line of all time. Scotty Bowman let them do what they wanted to do and utilize there talent. Fetisov who was sad and bitter about the 1980 Olympics when they lost to team USA said his most memorable moment in all of sports is when he hoisted up the Stanley cup for the first time ever and couldn’t believe it happened that relieved the pain of Lake Placid and realized how thankful he was playing a game that he loved for a living making more money than he could ever dream of living in a country where he never felt more free and only hearing it from the fans when they didn’t play up to their level.
This man was the most gifted and talented players I’ve ever seen. He was a great skater, and complete hockey player. As a wings fan, I was saddened to see him leave as a free agent in 2003. I get it’s a business, but Sergei should’ve finished his career as a red wings player.
It was his move to make. A friend of mine holds a grudge that he didn't stay, too.. and I don't know why. He put many many years in Detroit. And look at him here - he says he's a Redwing at heart as he's being inducted into the hall of fame. He didn't have to say that. And there's nothing that says you're a great & loyal player ONLY if you play your whole career in one jersey... as much as I would have loved for him to finish in Detroit. I have nothing but love and respect for 91.
19 and 91 were a terror to play against back in the day. When your team has one of the greatest captains in history and one of the greatest talents ever, you're in good hands. We all know how good that Detroit team was now but this guy was the fire that fueled that team and Yzerman was the stoic symbol of greatness. Crazy stuff to think about now.

I don't think his number will be retired. A retired number is not for the greatest player to wear a Red Wing uniform, but the greatest Red Wings. The holdout in 2003 when he and his agent leveraged $28M for 40 games or so. In 2008 he was offered $50M for 5 years then $40M for 4 years, $30M for 3 years...He wound up signing for $8M for 5 years with Anaheim...very selfish. When his investment advisor squandered $50M of his money, I believe it was karma for his greed....a truly great player however.....
