I wasnt looking for a video on how to make a walking stick, but this was the only video I could find that so well explains how to work with heated horns! Thanks a lot for this, I'll try to apply this in making horn sheets and forks/spoons etc.
You boil the water 100 C , then drop your Horn in tte hot water , after 5 to 10 mi nits later you get out and press the horn . Now you got flat the horn plate and throe normal water .
Way late to the party, but are the horns filled with another material? All of the horns I can find available for purchase are hollow and can’t be mounted with a central screw post or even shaped in this manner. Are there fillers you can recommend?
Hi all horns have a certain amount of hollow. With the Indian water Buffalo horn they have a lot of solid on old horns. What you buy is the solid tip, the hollow has been removed. What you have is either a young horn or from another animal, so look for Water Buffalo horn. I have had a look to see who have imported into the U S and found Atlantic coral Enterprise they might help. Countries are funny about importing animal by products . Good luck Dave
Started to turn my hand at stick making last year, I've been learning by my mistakes, Your videos are excellent and give so many helpful hints, looking forward to more videos.
Great stuff Dave, nice meeting you last Sunday and giving me advise. I mentioned I had all the hazel seasoning in preparation for making walking sticks. Will lookout for you again, take care and look forward to more videos.
@@woodlandsticks1365 thanks. Does it matter if the horn is older or does it need to be fresh? I've ground up the horn I have and there is still one crack near where the heel turns from stick to where the hand will grip the handle. And if I may ask, what are the dimensions of the thickest end? I ask so I don't leave it too thick. Currently mine is 38mm x 45mm and the section at the heel is 45mm Thanks again. 👍👍

Dave. I have enjoyed the video, very clear and easy to follow. I now have a buffalo horn and the bending device is being made. Any idea on the release date for the next video on shaping and mounting. Thanks again Tim
very useful information,i am a fellow stick maker and want to make a jig to actually bend the horn so i can make a buffalo horn market stick. After i have made the stick I will show you the finished product. Thankyou very much. ps could you show all of us how to bend the crook,if you could that would be great thanks.

woodlandsticks thank you very much and I will most definitely keep in touch because you may help me learn more. So thanks and I can't wait for the next video.
Hello Dave, do you have any suggestions on good places to buy some horn, me and my Grandad are keen stick makers but since lockdown we can find any horn. Have you any ideas?
knowing how much of a "two and eight" (state) I get myself in when I'm glueing up and clamping my woodwork, I think I'll steer clear of buffalo horn 😂, I only have two arms.
I boiled a Buffalo horn for 4 hours and it barely bent at all. Seeing you boil something for 45 minutes and then you can ban I'm dead what's in that pot.
The important thing is to keep it hot after the boil. Have clamps and former ready. Clamp quickly to the former, then heat with a hot air gun where you want the first bend to be. The first bend is the hardest.
Hi Carl Sorry to say it but deer and elk horn are not horn they are antlers ,Antlers are bone so no they will not bend. Thank you for your comments Dave
Very different. You can indeed bend antler, however (and bone, elephant ivory, etc.). Soak in horse piss for a month beforehand (or alternately, distilled vinegar).
@@woodlandsticks1365 yes I meant you can hear which counties in the UK Influenced the Aussie dialect, I'm up in Cumbria so your similarities are strong to my ears
I live in Illinois USA and have a variety of trees to make sticks from but the majority are pine. Is pine a good wood to use for these projects? If not there is plenty of other wood but most has grown too large. I'm having bad luck finding the right stick. Any tips?
Hi Here in the UK we are spoilt for sticks. I have seen sticks made from Christmas trees and they looked good I think most young growth of wood is usable for stick making so you will have to experiment.Good luck Dave
Left horn is grounded on a pyramid bolders the right one is grounded on bodmin moor aka bent double horns and both the horn points are hidden in single clouds
Usted pudo hacer este video en un par de minutos de duración.... A propósito : cuánto más aire caliente le dé al cuerno, más se seca y más difícil de doblar. Atentamente, e.ll.
For materials that will stretch under heat (eg steel), you are correct. Some materials split instead of stretching so in that case the interior of the bend (“smaller radius”) must be heated instead to facilitate compression (eg aluminum, ...buffalo horn).
Hi Dyfan Buffalo horn is in short supply as the main importer has retired. I have no horns left as I have retired. My suggestion is to join Shepherds crooks and live stock on facebook and ask if anyone has one spare. Dave
Dave your such a good stick maker ,you make it look easy.. thanks for passing these skills on to everyone who shares a interest ..what a great man

Very different. You can indeed bend antler, however (and bone, elephant ivory, etc.). Soak in horse piss for a month beforehand (or alternately, distilled vinegar).
Are these water buffalo horns or American buffalo horns? Great videos, Thanks.
Indian Water Buffalo horns the horns have a lot of solid on the tips
A guess as to what length? Thanks again for the information Dave.@@woodlandsticks1365
The solid on Buffalo horn can be upto 20". 12" is enough for a walking stick handle 16" for a crook handle
So good 😍👍
Do you have a source to buy the horns?
All Buffalo horn is imported into UK from India
Great video, on a side note you can really hear the origins of the Australian accent
Sorry it is Norfolk, Suffolk, with a dash of Essex UK.

Always apply heat to side with the longest radius!
