I think I heard this on the radio on Bartok's 100th birthday in 1981. This performance has ever been THE reference to me.

Best performance--of the many I've heard--of what I believe is the greatest piano concerto of the 20th century.

The sound is incredible expressive, like in no other recording heard until now. The whole, interpretation and recording sound is indeed the best, the most expresive, most present and most artikulated ever heared of this concerto. It is as if I really hear this concerto for the first time. Great musicians!!!

Einfach wunderbar!

Excellent. The interpretation, performance and sound balance is the best I've heard even with the TH-cam compression.
Bartok would be pleased I'm sure.
He said just before his death that it was a shame he had to go with so much more to say.
Ten people at what should have been a state funeral..

If you like it slower, try Schiff/Fischer.

Bartok usually favored faster tempos. I guess this one is about what he wanted. Most others may be too slow...

This is quite possibly the greatest rendition of this amazing concerto: the most organic, unified, together, however you wanna call it, they really hit it right on the head, and carry on. I believe this miraculous achievement was possible through the fact that it is conducted by a pianist who is also a great proponent of this great concerto, who clearly knows it inside out and the fact that the soloist and the conductor are indeed the lifelong great friends. And apparently Dezsi Ranki NEVER stopped practicing: he is a far superior virtuoso than I remembered. I’ll be honest with you: I’ve always really liked him for his incredibly good looks. 😅😅😅

It is fantastic. What a partnership. Check out Kocsis playing this in rehearsal with conductor Yuri Simonov, 1997. Incredible. (and Kocsis was quite handsome too 😊!).
