What a stocky little grilse! Beaching a fish like that can scrape the fish’s eyes and injure it. It’s not recommended for any fish you want to release. better to keep him in the water. When I’m by myself and get the fish close I land the fish the way bass tournament anglers land their bigger fish. I hand-over-hand down the rod towards the tip, careful to keep the tip pointed at the fish so I don’t break my rod. Then hand-line the fish in so you can tail it. Once you do it a few times it’s really pretty easy. Plus it’s a lot of fun! It adds a whole new dimension to the fight! With those Spey rods that’s about the only way other than beaching the fish that I can see that you could do it. Anyway man, all the best!
