An influence of Richard Garriott's friend with Finnish heritage, perhaps. She appears in the later games as one of the companions of the Avatar. Anyway, torilla tavataan!
So...before Iolo became the Stranger/Avatar's B.F.F., he was a thief who only wanted to steal our hero's stuff, huh? I guess that's where Iolo got his tendency to steal everything that wasn't nailed down-and some things that were nailed down-in Ultima VII.
One part and it already looks like this will be fun. The Phazor should be helpful if Kiko encounters another monster like the dragon turtle. I must say the vector graphix in the dungeons are actually kinda charming.
Yeah it seems so. Was wondering that myself when I have been watching Kikoskia's previous Ultima series. Maybe we'll find out more similar stuff during this journey.
Apparently, the bow and arrows are stronger than the greatsword while also dealing damage at range. Not that it matters anymore because it's time to pretend we're in Star Trek now.
Amusing that you can equip your skin, in order to remove all of your armour. I've always enjoyed watching you play games I never got to play myself, and hearing your occasional stories about your own childhood experiences with them, what you loved about them, your favourite characters, and all of those sorts of things. It will be interesting seeing you play some of the older Ultima series, both because of the love I developed for it later, and because I'm making the wild assumption that playing older games (this being before you were born, I think, if you and Helloween are about the same age) for the first time gives you a bit of the same kind of feelings and imagination I have about them, thinking about how my younger self would've felt and reacted, as well as my current self.
It seems to be currently a running theme in Kikos Let's Plays to have laser-shooting weapons in otherwise sort-of-medival themed fantasy settings. This is the third one in a row (with Tiny Barbarian and the early part of Daikatana GBC being the previous ones). Maybe he should play a Sci-Fi game in the near future. But then he might just end up having to run around with a great sword in that...
18:19 Only ever played the not so old Might and Magics back in the day that have blasters, this seems like end game equipment. Not bad after being just about 20 minutes in.
Thank you for the info about dropping coins in the pond; that isn't even in the Ultima Collection strategy guide. The rope and spike are good for climbing out of pits in dungeons if you fall through them.
If you can get random weapons by dropping 10 coins at a certain pond, why would you not keep doing that until you run out money and then sell unwanted weapons?
I've never really understood Ultima's combination of fantasy and sci-fi. In a series that has space travel and futuristic weapons and armor, most of the people in the game choose to live a medieval style of life? Wizardry had that same thing to a certain degree. Though in Ultima the story is basically that you play a character who leaps into the video game they're playing right? So I guess you could just throw up your hands and go "video game logic" and be done with it.
It also has to do with the fact that Richard Garriott wasn't sure what genre of RPG he wanted the Ultima series to be. As a result, the first three games in the series had a mix of "sword an sorcery" and "sci-fi" with the third leaning more toward sword and sorcery.
It was very common in the 80's for both to be combined in all kinds of fiction. Might and Magic also had a lot of sci fi within its fantasy setting along with many other games. As for the plot, you are not leaping into video games to save fictional worlds. The character that you're playing is someone who is quite literally heading to another world using strange magical gates to save it, in this case from Mondain.
@@Kikoskia At least Might and Magic kept saving the sci-fi part up to the end. You basically never knew until you've almost beaten the game already. Well, until you realized they all have that end game element.
WHEN LAST WE LEFT THE AVATAR, THE AVATAR WAS BORN!
You went from Warrior to Trekie in a heartbeat
"We're going to push 'K', for 'climb'."
....
Checks out.
I'd blame Mortal Kombat, but that wasn't out yet for quite a while...
Klimb
duh
I'll play this along, again. Never could bring myself to play the ancient Ultimas .... this will be so much more fun with you! :)
I hate enemies that steal yet somehow when you skewer them in their kidney and they die the stolen item has vanished
Classic, alongside chests and doors that keep eating generic "fits everything" keys...
"Li'l Karelia's Finnish Grocery" You know I wasn't expecting that there would be a Finland reference in this game, huh.

It's amazing how even back then in the first game, Iolo was a notorious thief!
Some things never change!
Iolo's kleptomania goes way back, huh?
Yeah it seems so.
Was wondering that myself when I have been watching Kikoskia's previous Ultima series.

Although that does raises some questions about his weapon & armour shop in Ultima 7.

Or Eternia.
Iolo begins as he means to go on, I see.
I'd love to the the rest of the trilogy on this channel!!!
Ahhh the memories of old rpgs I have such nostalgia for similarly old games such as The Magic Candle and Alternate Reality (The city)

I have great memories of Drunk Kiko playing the part of Iolo

A _laser_ greatsword.
Always enjoy your Let’s Play videos. Great commentary and plenty of fun! I haven’t played this game for a long time.
18:19 Only ever played the not so old Might and Magics back in the day that have blasters, this seems like end game equipment. Not bad after being just about 20 minutes in.
9:19 Iolo's not only a kleptomaniac but a stalker as well it seems.
The He-Man series had both magic and technology....so this is nothing new for me :D

Diamondfist1 So the game does have pits, much like Akalabeth does. I'll have to remember that.
Very much looking forward to getting stuck into this ;)
So Iolo is the one who taught the Avatar to steal and steal well.
"Stealing is OK as long as it's done well." ~Richard Garriott in the U8 quotes...
Iolo, you thief!
This episode was sponsored by The Saddest Skeleton ever
The commentator speaks in scales in every sentence.
The thief in that dungeon stole your dagger, btw.
I figure it out in time, worry not.
Man, that’s a cool Dwarf Fortress skin!
That's crazy that you can just get the most powerful weapon in the game at random.
Iolo suddenly becomes a useful friend in a later game? lol
Oh wow this game is amazing. Just not sure if the Apple II version was just not good or what but I see the light now. Amazing game.
All these years... and I had no idea you were supposed to drop money into ponds...
I've heard of people dropping their phones into ponds though. With Shazam installed! :D
remember kids K stands for ''Klimb''
you learn much from watching kiko
RIP sad skeleton.
Do not mourn for him, he will return many times. Each time, we will zap him with zappy pew pews.
If you can get random weapons by dropping 10 coins at a certain pond, why would you not keep doing that until you run out money and then sell unwanted weapons?
Oh neat. Finnish Groceries. I guess store names might be randomized too.
happy to see you doing this :3
Back in the days when Iolo and Gwenno weren't as cool as they became.
Kiko's Log, Stardate 20/03/2018...
All these talks about not angering guards is just giving me Oblivion flashbacks....
Pewpewpew pewpewpew!!!
Does the bow & arrows run out of arrows? Does the phazor run out of shots?
thethegreenmachine No and no. All ranged weapons have infinite ammunition. The only finite offensive ability are spells which must be purchased.
@Kikoskia
My goodness! That pond gave me a blaster.

How could you guys enjoy this game, I just don’t understand.
A fun game is still fun, whether it was released in the 80s or yesterday.
Too much talking man!
