Do you agree or disagree with this statement?: "You should only own a yacht privately if you plan to live on board full time.Otherwise rent one, co-own it, or set it up as an income producing business?"
interesting video. I am about to buy a 45m Motor Yacht which I will live on full time and will be first cruising the Med then all the Asian Islands to eventually end up in China (which many cruisers do not know has some of the best marina's and crystal clear waters) My project is to visit the remote Islands to help the people on these islands so I will have both volunteer and paying guests on board. What are your thoughts on this and where would be the best venues to advertise for the paying guests and crew?
Well, that depends entirely on how much cash you can sink into it without cringing, eh? On the other hand, if you can own a yacht, why would you want to live anywhere else? :)
I have a friend Trey who, like me, was a maritime engineer, and who therefore had enough time off to fully use his Moorings charter cat (a Leopard 43 if memory serves). At some point, Moorings wanted more boats in Belize and my friend was allowed to use the boat for 2 or three months while semi-circling the Caribbean from the BVI to Belize so that was additional time aboard without any fees other than voyage supplies. Obviously, his experience was vastly different than the average charter owner but, on the whole, Trey found the deal pretty positive. Maintenance other than cosmetic upkeep can be somewhat indifferent, especially given that the boats need only function on a limited range merry-go-round charter course meaning that owners taking over their boats after charter can expect to spend some time and money making the boats cruise-worthy. The cloud hanging over the entire issue is the continued viability of tropical charter operations in a world where Category 4 and 5 hurricanes are becoming an annual norm. At some point, insurance rates and availability must suffer.
Yes Mark, I don't doubt that it works. I founded and ran a bareboat charter company in Australia, Magnetic Island Rent-a-Yacht - we had happy owners and lots of happy charterers. It all comes down to expectations and how much you are prepared to put into it. Not dissimilar to life really :-) Cheers mate, appreciate the comment.
My boat is 23 ft so that I can sail easily single-handed, put on my wetsuit and easily clean the bottom, tilt the mast down as for accessing the light without climbing, or I can get under the lowest bridges on inland canals. An outboard engine takes no onboard space and is simple to maintain or replace without any cramped engine room. A sink, toilet, and deck shower to rinse off salt complete the ensemble. Being tied up in anything much more or as a business - makes me queasy enough to hang my head over the side. I own and care for my boat, and she takes best care of me free and clear.
Why is it impossible to get plain and simple pricing on any of this without getting on the phone with one of these companies ? We just want simple idea of cost range on 45’ cats in these programs.
I bought a Bene 411 5 year old from a charter company in Auckland (Moorings) for 210 ,000 sailed some 12,000 miles in 5 years sold it for 215,000 with not a dollar spent on her except for a new Battery bank & Bilge pump (Usual maintenance - engine servicing ,Antifoul etc. ) The boat was in great condition when bought , Moorings couldn't be more helpful & totally recommend this way of buying . 5 to 7 years would be my limit on buying from a charter company any older the sheer usage starts telling . Another great informative vid . Oh for most of the time i had her i charted in the Marlborough Sounds (Hard sailing) Skippered only.
Interesting video. I've always dismissed these charter ownership schemes n the past, but I might actually give it serious consideration now. I want to be living aboard in 5 to 6 years from now, so the timing could work nicely.
@@SailingLuckyfish good to see that boet. Lots of SA crew on the super yachts to. I will be on the water by the end of the year but going for a 45m motor yacht. To much PT on these sailing yachts and with the project I'm doing as my retirement I need space, more cabins and storage for the equipment we will carry for helping the remote island folks while we enjoy ourselves. I will ive on board as well so being an farm boy SPACE is needed :)
Is that tomorrow Aukland or Ulaanbaatar time? (should I wait up for midnight to tick over?) looking forward to project X. Thanks for another great video, this series was a little different from the usual LF videos but still enjoyable.
Since when are FP bulsa core boats? Total bollocks. Resin infused foam throughout both hulls. I'll reassess the 'knowledgeable' Guru if this is the level of technical ignorance.

Wonder how this Lagoon fest has changed since the 450 bulkhead nightmares?

Spring in NZ just had a week of equinoxial gales and rain. The outdoor furniture got rearranged.
"Rearranged" as in moved into the neighbours yard? 🤣hopefully no damage.
