This audio engineer approves. A thousand times yes, so much truth here, both about the importance of subjective preference for the experience, and the difference between that and accuracy of the reproduction of the sounds.
That's one thing I figured out a few years ago. They may advertise fantastic response but then they sound like they're in a fish tank across the room. Stuff such has $100 Sony's and beats which were blown way out of proportion. I own several sets of high-end headphones and so far the best are my Bose qc15 and Sennhieser hd650.
Best bang for buck headphones i've owned are Sennhieser hd595 picked them up years ago for around 90 quid and they are still going strong and sound amazing, i would go for the 600's i think when these give out. I use a pair of IE60's which considering they are in ear and block out noise also with a pair of Comply Memory Foam tips they soundstage they produce is fucking phenomenal and spacious, they have been thrown in my pocket with my phone for about 3+ years, sweat soaked back and to to the gym ect and sound as good as the day i got them, so impressed with them, Sony don't make them any longer. Just been testing out Sonys second gen Bose Quiet Comfort 35 II competitor the 1000MX2 and i am pretty impressed so far with the sound quality, yet to take them out in a noise environment and or see if they can Noise Cancel the ear cancer played at the gym lol.
Two things are missing, and I think worth mentioning: 1) Frequency and temporal response are always interconnected. A flat frequency response means a short and precise temporal response (so-called impulse response). Likewise, an unbalanced frequency response with many peaks and dips means a more sluggish temporal response. 2) For on-ear headphones, the anatomy of the listener's pinna will affect the actual spectrum you get at the eardrum. And this influence is quite big and very individual.
+RedstoneSlime Yep, Linus effed up a bit I think with the positioning choice of the greenscreen. I think I saw lately a few videos ago on LTT that the greenscreen is basically just sitting in the big warehouse instead of a room, where you could put in carpet and other sound dampening materials. As long as the Greenscreen is right in the middle of the warehouse this echo will be there no matter what.
Reference headphones are a name given to high - end "monitor/studio headphones." As far as I seen companies for the most part have not wrongly used this term. Although beware headphones that say monitor headphones or studio grade/studio headphones. Also if you are going to get ATH-M50X, scrap it and get ATH-M40x instead or get another pair of headphones from a different company.
As someone who listen to wide range of genre in music,I prefer the balanced and then use amp/dac with bass boost so I could just turn on the bass boostso when needed,it sounds good enough for me compared to bass headphone without dac amp
I know what you mean. My Audio Technica ATH-M50x have the full range, they are very clear, perfect for travel headphones. Now my preferred headphones, the Razer Kraken Pro, also have the full range, are extremely clear, but they have a powerful bass that no other headphones can even try to compete with. The M50xs are great because they are clear and have somewhat bass. But when it comes to the Razer Kraken, it's really able to just deliver the extremely low sounds loud and clear, without losing any of the sound quality.
I fit into the V shape preference, I like the lows and highs better, than the midranges. Not only that, but i can tune down if i wish, for a more natural sound if wanted. I use ear buds more than headphones, but i'm sure this'll hep with phones as well. When i look at my buds, i look for two things, Frequency response and sensitivity. The wider the freq. range, the better the quality of the drivers. I know we can only hear, from 20-20K. But the wider the range, the more of what you can hear, you can hear. hope that didn't confuse you. sensitivity is the other one, i look at. The higher the DB of the signal, also tells the quality of said driver. Anything over 103 DB's to me is solid. When i look at buds, i look for around 10-30K (or above) and at least 103 DB's. In my opinion, this is where the good sounding buds are no matter the price
Flat frequency response is best as it doesn't tire you when listening to them for hours on end also good quality headphones or any high end equipment will always state their frequency response with a + - db rating without it it's meaningless
Is it possible have something similar to colorblindness but with audio instead of visual? I absolutely suck when it comes to learning music. I flunked every course I took in school and always had serious problems on the subject. A teacher once was trying to get me to sing low (?bass?). I tried singing lower and lower each time. The issue I always had is that she was satisfied with the sound I finally produced even though I couldn't tell it from any other of the low sounds I produced before that. I can tell that notes are different. For the world though I can't ever distinguish which note is which. Don't even get me started on Rhythm. I still don't know how to hear it. People have walked me through dancing to the Rhythm multiple times. I never could tell for sure which part of the music was the Rhythm they were dancing to.

sir, i just want to ask. i recently bought a high gain guitar amplifier but when i plug my marshall major headphones. there is very little sound comming out from it and was not very clear. i checked the impedance of the headphones it is 32 ohm. does this mean i need a higher impedance headphone? please give me an expert advice.

Which headphone should I get? I am looking for a studio headphone that doesnt give me headache for working long time, I want to be able to hear all frequencies.
so why are some of headphones having extremely big frequency response? i mean what is the real difference between headphones with smaller frequency response and the ones with huge frequency response?
i am planing to build a new pc, and im planing on having custom liquid cooling, 2 x gtx 980ti sli, 32gb ddr4 ram, i7 6700k, 2 hdd and 1 ssd, what amount of power supply would do the job?
Evilhouse I ran a 650 watt with an old GTX 580 and an i7-2600k, which pulls 100 more watts than my current build (R9 390 with an i7-4790k), and I was getting beeping noises on occasion that (according to my research) was indicative of reaching the power limit. Even with my current build (using the same 650 watt PSU), ever since I installed a second monitor, I can no longer charge my phone via a USB cable into the computer, the cable and phone need to be connected to a wall adapter to charge. In graphics cards alone you will need to pull around 250 more watts than me, which puts you up to 900 vs my 650, and remember that my 650 is apparently at its' limits (I should stress that I have not empirically verified this). On top of that, I can only assume that the custom water cooling will result in overclocking, which means more power draw. Not to mention that you want some overhead for any and all things that you will plug into the system. For future reference by the way, RAM and mass storage (HDD and SSD) use negligible amounts of power.
TheMohawkNinja thanks, ima go for the 1000 watt, any suggestions on which one i should go for, i have one of the ratings used is the bronze, silver, gold and platinum and i think it has to do with efficacy im sorry if i sound like a noob, power and electricity have always been my week point
Evilhouse Always check the user reviewed ratings of the product. I just have a Corsair one which works fine, and has for years. Rosewell makes some good ones from what I hear as well. Go do some research on NewEgg.com. All that stuff is pretty well user-reviewed. The 80+ ratings you see are efficiency. While they will all shove up to 1000 Watts into your system, bronze rated will pull more out from the wall than silver, which pulls more than gold, which pulls more than platinum, which pulls more than titanium. Also, you may want to go for an 1100 Watt, because I'm having second thoughts as to whether or not I have a 650 Watt or a 750 Watt. It shouldn't add all that more price, and I don't know how many peripherals you are going to use anyways (Looks like the pump for your cooling loop will be 20-25 Watts on top of your other system specs as well).
Those jabs at the beats headphones, lol. You get a like just because of that, but great explanation as well. I wish you'd went into mic frequency response graphs but those are a but more complicated so w/e
Back in the day of the myriad of electronics mags, like Popular Electronics. I.e. the 1960'-early 1970's in my world. Custom and expectations when reviewing speaker systems (forget about headphones, the fidelity just wasn't feasible at a price below professional salaries) dictated that the default response curve was flat. If it wasn't you were told. Believe it or not, most of the speaker systems that did not have full response were lacking in the bass response.. Now that didn't mean you couldn't get it. what it meant was you had to use bass and treble and if you were really lucky, midrange controls. In the mid to late 70's, units came out with "radio button" controls that engaged various filters for "loudness" so that if you were playing at a low volume, the bass and/or treble would be augmented to keep the perceived sound the same as at ordinary volumes. I did not see my first graphic equalizer until the late 1970's Actually, the 20,000 cps upper limit is not quite true. in our youth we do decect sounds up to a much higher frequency. In 1973, when I had a hearing test at age 28, I was told I was losing some if my upper frequency hearing and when I expressed a bit of concern the audiologist told me not to worry, it was in the 48,000 hz area. Druning the 80's and 90's some security systems did a number on my head and I could hear a very high-pitched whine. This left most persons unaffected
People may have expected a flat response, but they certainly did not get it. I have listened to a lot of old speakers, and most of them had a huge emphasis on the lower mid range, with poor bass and high frequency response. This is probably why rock music, which focuses a lot on the midrange, was so popular.
The best bass frequencies are around 150Hz, you should definitely boost! Took me a long time to gain this information! 130Hz - 170Hz equals Terrifying Bass you should start your eq curve around here. V-Curve-4-eva.
too bad slick said nothing about headphones with higher/lower than 20k-20 hz range, im no audiophile but it is proven that ppl can 'hear' more than 20khz/20hz thanks to ear bones and structure. it's also very subjective for every1 but proven that it is possible and common
Of course it is possible to hear outside those ranges but the point is almost all musical instruments and vocals stay within those ranges. Whatever is outside that range is likely to be artefacts of processing.
+rusty_frame true that but.. the fact remains that i have not seen a headphones pair that advertise 20-20khz. they always show different numbers ;) and that is something that slick could have explained to some ppl. from his explaination it seems like manufacturers always put 20-20k on headphone box
Pap9 yeah but i think what this video is trying to say is that it's not the frequency range that matters so much so as the frequency response curve. what i understand is the quoted range refers to the frequencies where the response is within a certain limit of variation. but this is subjectively defined by every manufacturer so it is no more than a marketing gimmick in most cases. the best way to choose a set of headphones is still to listen to them.
+rusty_frame agree but i wont agree on manufacturares using it just as a gimmick. yeah sometimes it happens but more often the 'advertising' is real/hearable and both the curve and response range can tell a lot, for example i dont get the hype from cheaper/mid-price senheiser phones imho they are ugly and secondly they range is ultra bad, i feel so deaf with them:) so it all ends up with personal feels
i prefer to buy flat headphones and then make custom eq's in vlc. i like hearing every single sound in a song, it just so happens i want the bass to rattle my brain and hear the slightest inhale of a an instrumentalist or hear the fingers slide across the fretboard... don't judge me
I would like to see a video about audio lag. Considering auditory reaction times are faster than visual reaction times by about 100ms seems like it would be as important (if not more so) than whether or not your monitor lags by only 1ms. Can you even find information on audio lag in reference to audio devices or headphones? Are the headphones/speakers as important as the audio device inside the computer? Do dedicated audio cards introduce more or less lag? Just curious, since the information does not seem to be readily available..
I'm extremely curious if someone can help explain to me. Why do channels ask on EVERY VIDEO to like or dislike and to subscribe? If I like the content or the video I never have to be reminded to like or subscribe.
You can always adjust equalizers before they reach the headphones, but if they're boosting the bass regardless you have no choice. Get mastering headphones or something, cheaper and better
+Adam Conner Well, gaming headset tend to have more emphasis on the bass and treble, because of explosions and gunshots, some gamers like myself tend to lean to a more balanced headphone, because of the clarity you get with reference headphones, but a reference headphone can sound a bit boring. Also a good thing to consider are open vs closed, an open headphone will usually produce less bass, but the sound sounds way more open than with a closed back style headphone, so what you get is an extremely pleasant experience while playing a shooter, because of the way the sound is designed to let bulets fly past your ears for example
try looking at the usage of the products, and counting those numbers up. i have the same kind of build with a 550 watt power supply so i think you will be okay. maybe also try asking it on the forums(linustechtips.com/main/). you can know it for sure over there.
I wish online stores would put more emphasis on technical data when looking for headphones. Most of the times you can choose from "Suitable for DJs" and "Suitable for Gaming" headphones, which of course don't mean ANYTHING at all.
That's what I love about headphones. Sure their are bad ones that are absolutely horrible, but in all reality their is no such thing as "bad" headphones. It all comes down to the person in terms of quality. I have Grado SR325 and some people do not like them or can't tell the difference from 10 dollar ear buds. But I can and thats all that matters. Always test them before you buy. Especially if they are expensive.
I honestly prefer headphones with a flat sound. You have kind of adjust to it at first, but once you do, you may notice details in the sound that you didn't before. I also find that a flat sound is better for gaming, simply because it's easier to hear gunshots and enemy footsteps.
I just realized that since 1/4 of these videos are always sponsorships, the amount of entertainment never equates to more than over 4 minutes of content max, if I consider this when looking at my feed, I'd probably watch your videos more often. _ -* the more you know
What? I'm an audio pro and this isn't true at all. This is probably more of a psycho acoustic thing as your mind adjusts to the frequency response curve of your new headphones.
I'm also a audio pro. Drivers are mechanical and therefore like most mechanical items do have a break in time. In my experience audio will sound somewhat "brighter" on broken in headphones. In addition yes over time you will adapt to headphones if you use them frequently or for extended periods of time. but this is different as I can take a new off the shelf pair of headphones and compared to the ones that are broken in. there is almost always a difference.
This is pretty much a vague rip on Beats headphones which are infamous among professionals as heads phones with relatively poor sound for there price point. Usually double the price of what they are actually worth when just considering the price. They are basically just a fashion statement.
I wished you made more on frequency response not only on headphones but also a bit mor in general (like circuits or even mechanical systems) and explain why 20Khz headphones probably don't actually do the trick. like going a bit into how audio waves are actually built. but good video :)
Bro a headphone has 5hz - 23000hz where as another headphone has 18hz - 23000 hz. If both headphones are bass focused and use same type of spares and all. Then which will be enrich in BASS?
maybe if you cud make examples of difrent headphones that are good at the difrents rangess like saying this ones are good for base this ones are godd mide range and treble ones
Listening to music with headphones with a flat signature shows you how good an audio engineer really is
I definitely prefer flat headphones and then EQ/balance on my own equipment.

TheMohawkNinja thanks, ima go for the 1000 watt, any suggestions on which one i should go for, i have one of the ratings used is the bronze, silver, gold and platinum and i think it has to do with efficacy
im sorry if i sound like a noob, power and electricity have always been my week point
2:55 to skip the boring intro. You're welcome.
+Uniblue Media You Should!
😂
Can you make a video about infiniband?
instructions per clock going into detail what actually improves it per generation of architecture being as technical as possible
I did not see my first graphic equalizer until the late 1970's
Actually, the 20,000 cps upper limit is not quite true. in our youth we do decect sounds up to a much higher frequency.
Bought some HD8 DJ's because of Linus' video, no regrets!
Same. They are the best pair of headphones i have ever owned. Amazing bass response.
+Monkey Feces oh yea, needed a DAC to get full potential from them but was worth it. Added a modmic and great for gaming :D
So what happened to + or - 3db in the freq range spec?
I go for flat equipment cause the bloody files should be mixed to emphasize the ranges that need emphasizing.
Looking at you, dr dre
Who is dr dre
+Nick_The_Potato the owner of the channel, Dr Dre tech tips
+Nick_The_Potato I seem to have forgoten
The mew ones are actually alright
+Ms. Chanandler Bong they just sound CATastrophic.
too bad slick said nothing about headphones with higher/lower than 20k-20 hz range, im no audiophile but it is proven that ppl can 'hear' more than 20khz/20hz thanks to ear bones and structure. it's also very subjective for every1 but proven that it is possible and common
Of course it is possible to hear outside those ranges but the point is almost all musical instruments and vocals stay within those ranges. Whatever is outside that range is likely to be artefacts of processing.
+rusty_frame true that
but..
the fact remains that i have not seen a headphones pair that advertise 20-20khz. they always show different numbers ;) and that is something that slick could have explained to some ppl. from his explaination it seems like manufacturers always put 20-20k on headphone box
+rusty_frame agree but i wont agree on manufacturares using it just as a gimmick. yeah sometimes it happens but more often the 'advertising' is real/hearable and both the curve and response range can tell a lot, for example i dont get the hype from cheaper/mid-price senheiser phones
imho they are ugly
and secondly they range is ultra bad, i feel so deaf with them:)
so it all ends up with personal feels
Remember when Linus used to make this videos?
+Julio De La Torre You Should.
So what do you think about the Sony MDR7506 pro?
please explain android usb configurations... mtp...ptp....midi....audio source please i need your explanation how this work
any videos been made about transistors and/or the new finfets? would be interesting to have that explained haha
I bought Astro a40 TR. It has 20 - 24.000 is it good then or??
Where do you guys get your stock images?
Pornhub
How do we identify what kind of signature that particular headphone have?
i prefer to buy flat headphones and then make custom eq's in vlc. i like hearing every single sound in a song, it just so happens i want the bass to rattle my brain and hear the slightest inhale of a an instrumentalist or hear the fingers slide across the fretboard... don't judge me
I have a sennheiser 203 on ear , and im happy with it .
is there a website you can find headphones based on the frequency
EMITS SOUND! :D
The most awesome instant laugh of my life ! XD
I am looking for headphones or speakers that play 40hz low frequency sine wave.
My headphones lean more on the trebble side, but I want something a bit more well rounded. Anyone knows a pair that's under 100 USD?
+Jorion Edwards Maybe Audio Technica M40x or AKG K240
I'm extremely curious if someone can help explain to me. Why do channels ask on EVERY VIDEO to like or dislike and to subscribe? If I like the content or the video I never have to be reminded to like or subscribe.
Because some people have ridiculously short attention spans.
You can always adjust equalizers before they reach the headphones, but if they're boosting the bass regardless you have no choice. Get mastering headphones or something, cheaper and better
Off topic, but Diamond Eyes!
how does range effect gaming headphones?
+Adam Conner Well, gaming headset tend to have more emphasis on the bass and treble, because of explosions and gunshots, some gamers like myself tend to lean to a more balanced headphone, because of the clarity you get with reference headphones, but a reference headphone can sound a bit boring. Also a good thing to consider are open vs closed, an open headphone will usually produce less bass, but the sound sounds way more open than with a closed back style headphone, so what you get is an extremely pleasant experience while playing a shooter, because of the way the sound is designed to let bulets fly past your ears for example
Is 550 watt psu enouge for This build: pcpartpicker.com/list/qwcn6X
try looking at the usage of the products, and counting those numbers up. i have the same kind of build with a 550 watt power supply so i think you will be okay. maybe also try asking it on the forums(linustechtips.com/main/). you can know it for sure over there.
Ok ty
Fixed it. pcpartpicker.com/list/cLw28K
I already Got the build i just need a new power suply
Yeah it's enough
_ -* the more you know
thank you for useful video!
1:07 bottom left!!!!! MY INSTRUMENT!!!!!! EUPHONIUMS FTW!!! BAND GEEKS UNITE
lots of implied shade being thrown at Beats in this. I like it.
+MMQuck I love it. Those fuckers deserve it
nageorgiou2 WORST HEADPHONES EVER! Cheap, fell apart, bad bad bad sound quality.
Don't forget that these headphones time to "burn in" if you buy them brand new. They won't sound their best until you use them for a little while.
No, that's bull. Total bull.
I'm an audio pro as well and everything that is being written above is wrong. Trust me.
Thats only a myth.
What about impedance? please cover that one..
Got the UE 900, one of the best universal in-Ears on the market
get a pair of modular headphones. You can choose the speaker units range to your preference, and still look stylish
What about the driver type ?
Tell em Luke! SQUARESPACE: BUILD IT BEAUTIFUL.

why are these Afap videos unlistentoable
Luke "I kind of need a job.. but whatever" Fine i wont hate the video then just because i want you to keep your job
got an Audio Technica/Beats by Dr. Dre/V-MODA headphones listens to music downloaded from youtube-mp3. org :/
for the v shape bit I was like "SCOOP THEM MIDS" in my mind xD
This is pretty much a vague rip on Beats headphones which are infamous among professionals as heads phones with relatively poor sound for there price point. Usually double the price of what they are actually worth when just considering the price. They are basically just a fashion statement.
Linus, where did you go dude? :(
Could you tone down the compressor? it gives the audio a stressed quality. I don't particulatly like it, personally.
Well this is headphones, how do Loudspeakers and how rooms shape and size and effect the sound
I wished you made more on frequency response not only on headphones but also a bit mor in general (like circuits or even mechanical systems) and explain why 20Khz headphones probably don't actually do the trick. like going a bit into how audio waves are actually built. but good video :)
Love it how every time Luke starts talking these two gigantic arteries pop up on his neck like they're going to explode :D
Bro a headphone has 5hz - 23000hz where as another headphone has 18hz - 23000 hz. If both headphones are bass focused and use same type of spares and all. Then which will be enrich in BASS?
upload more videos regarding headphones.
Very well needed
maybe if you cud make examples of difrent headphones that are good at the difrents rangess
like saying this ones are good for base
this ones are godd mide range
and treble ones
