med student studying pharmacology and drug chemistry; just correcting some stuff:
nitrous is a dissociative not a depressant and also is actually highly flammable.
the term whippits was coined as nitrous is used in whipped cream containers to dispense whipped cream
It lasts usually around 90 seconds but can have an afterhigh for up to around 3 minutes. Nitrous wont cause liver or kidney damage typically (maybe if you black out on it but even then idk); the main problem is it's a neurotoxin as it lowers your body's capacity of holding vitamin b12, which helps your neurons run smoothly (or just run at all; thus the paralysis). Technically you can be completely safe with even a ton of nitrous if it's all in one session and you take b12 vitamins around 14 days later to get your levels back to normal but using it in succession is where the problems start as you'll never be able to recover your b12 capacity. Regardless don't use it; stick to weed or smth, but if you’re going to do it then keep sessions separated by at least 6 weeks and take b13 vitamins weekly; even after you decide youre done for good you should keep taking them for a couple months to make sure you’re ok.

Anesthesia assistant here. Its called Whippets cause they used to get high out of old whipped cream cans.
Most pressurised cans use laugh gas.
That being said i wanted to talk about the damage it does.
It leads to lack of oxygen in the brain. No oxygen means that the nerves dont get “food” so they die. It is important to know that permanent nerve damage from lack of oxygen (hypoxia) starts after a minute more or less. After 2 minutes neurones die and those cant be repaired. Our biggest brain centers are those of communication/movement/cognition.
Those centres die first, thats why people end up like vegetables. Please dont do it, i have seen it in my line of work and no one deserves this. Talk to someone. Also Pyro, please dont show how easily accessible it is.
Even if you dont lose any ability your lose neurons and slow the potential of your brain leading to permanent mood swings, depression and/or slowed processing power…. And thats permanent!!!

@@Jus4ya glad you asked. Dentists use it and provide extra oxygen all the time, so there is no fear of neurons dying. It still works are a relaxing agent for the central nervous system. Plus they have the patient on a monitor, bare minimum is a pulse oximeter. If used normally by a health professional then the risks are around 0%. At least thats how we use it, if you are in the US it might be that dentists let you inhale once or twice for relaxation. Again its important to know that they know how much to give. If used for fun people tend to seek the high so they stay in hypo-oxygenated state for excessive amounts of time
people who vegetable themselves out, they re-breathe their exhalled nitrous into a balloon which quickly leads to oxygen depravation in 2 mins. When I used it in (medical) school, I would take one hit and hold it for maybe 45 seconds max (with 30 percent actual air) and rebreathe for a few mins after that. unfortunately most drug users aren't autistically cautious and/or knowledgeable.

I was in culinary school. We got together a few students and they pulled out the whip its. One boy took a hit, passed out, smashed his head on a table.
I was the only person who attended to this kid. While the rest of them passed it around. The kid woke up after 30 seconds or so and went back for another hit. They passed the whip its to me, and i just yelled "are you fucking kidding me?" And walked out. They treated me like a square for the rest of the semester. But after that night I knew that the fact that these guys didnt think I was cool. Was proof that i was cooler than them.

4. "It causes kidney damage". That is also not true.
5. "Nitrous oxide's duration is 5sec." This is false. It takes about 5 sec for it to hit but the effect lasts for a minute or 2. And yes, this causes people to keep inhaling in order to prolong the effect of it.
6. "It's extremely addictive". That's up for debate. It's not as addictive like opiates, benzodiazepines and alcohol where you become physically dependent on it but it does make you want more of it once you start inhaling it but once you stop using it, it's easy to just not take it. If people become addicted to it, it's more that person that has an addictive personality and is probably prone to get addicted to other stuff as well, like alcohol, gambling and such.
I think you kind of went a bit too over-dramatic on the use of nitrous oxide and the actual effects of it.

People need to talk about this. I did hundreds of whippits in college. Everyone said nerve damage came from oxygen deprivation, like if you put a bag over your head and fill it with n2o. Or if you took too many balloons in a row with no normal breath. None of us knew about this. I developed a severe leg twitch late in college I always assumed was anxiety. now, not so sure :/
@alexism9656 True (unless you're vegetarian of course) which is why n2o can be a relatively safe drug if you don't "spam" it (don't try n2o it is not worth it and B12 deficiency is not the only problem). The danger comes from using it too often as it makes any B12 intake pretty much useless

I remember seeing a show called Intervention that featured some lady that was addicted to huffing computer duster. It gave her irreversible brain damage. It makes me sad that our world is so dark that some people can’t even endure it without drugs.

I’m a drug worker in Salford/Manchester. Got young lads in their early 20s having legs amputated and others who can’t walk permanently from Nitrous. It is harmless in small doses but overdoing it, it can be the most physically harmful
this is something that should be highlighted, you can even do 100 separate 8g chargers in one sitting. just make sure to keep it to ONE TIME and wait at least a month for your b12 receptors to heal. intermittently it’s fine to use recreationally but it’s the constant use that is picking people off like flies.

You will still probably get addicted to porn, game, etc but those at least won't lead to overdose and will do less harm in the short term and hopefully time will lead you to a better position where you no longer need escapism to cope

Nitrous oxide is not directly neurotoxic however it inactivates Vitamin B12 which can cause neural destruction if abused long term. That’s why doctors will be fine giving it to you for procedures but won’t allow you to take it daily.

You use the cans to load a whip cream dispenser. It turns the liquid into whip cream. Kids load it without the cream and then fill balloons with the laughing gas.
It's a fun high but lasts like a second and isn't worth the braindamage it causes.
I remember, back in the day, cooking stores had to put the canisters behind glass, because they were so prone to shoplifting.

This was super popular in my city. We called them "nangs" and most people would use balloons to trap the gas and inhale it repeatedly, which obviously leads to reinhaling a lot of carbon dioxide as well as whatever was inside the balloon. The longest I've ever had one last would be about 2 minutes and even then I'd started losing vision from lack of oxygen before I gave up on it. The best explanation I can give is that your entire body feels limp and loose, everything starts sounding like a VHS on 75% speed, and you get wildly turned on by anything and everything for about 20 seconds to a minute.
I stopped last year after ending my homeless era and I'm very grateful because I've been getting seizures without them. Don't do drugs kids, they mess you up a lot more than you think.

My grandpa was addicted to the same drug. He was a pediatrician and his firm had access to it. He was recreationally use it until he became a complete addict. One time, while he was high, he decided he needed to save his wife and kids (my grandma and dad). He ended up getting in a horrible accident where his legs were in constant pain for the rest of his life. When he was diagnosed with cancer (I’m not sure of what kind) it was already too late. He was so used to this pain from this accident that he couldn’t differentiate between leg pain and cancer pain. I never got the change to meet him. I’m named after him too.

If you freeze the can upside down, you can access all the gas without the cream. It's one of easiest way to get high using that stuff. A kid crashed his car while on nitrous oxide right in front of my bedroom. There was no screeching so he crashed at full speed and we could feel the house shake. If the street light pole wasn’t there, my fiancé and I would have been killed in our sleep from how gnarly the crash was. There was a passenger and the driver was laying on top of the engine when the ambulance got there. I don’t know if he survived. It kinda pisses me off that we could have been unlucky and that idiot could have killed me and my fiancé.

So Nitrous is such a "good" drug, ive actually heard stories of its abuse by medical personnel. My EMT class instructor said that WAY back when he was a medic down in Texas, they carried nitrous on their trucks to help knock people out if they were in severe pain or uncooperative or something. Well, it was frequent that they would go out to do checks on their trucks and find that the nitrous was really low. They ended up finding out that it was being abused by some of the medics because of its ability to get them high quickly, have a sustainable high, and then if they got a call or something, within a couple seconds they were back to normal. Safe to say that nitrous isnt used anymore by fire departments or EMS services.

Didn't do a lot of research for this one. It's called "whippits" because of the legit function of the stuff to make whipped cream. In normal settings, it's good for that and cold brew coffee because it makes smaller bubbles in liquid than the carbon dioxide of soda carbonation and gives a smoother texture to a drink. Plenty of people use them for their intended purposes. But the local shop that sells vapes, cigs, glass pipes, and CBD also sells whipped cream kits with nitrous cannisters, recreational use is common. I think it's also a popular sex drug, used similarly to poppers.

Nitrous is not a depressant. The medical information about this is way off. It is a dissociative, and a psychedelic. It actually can be very helpful for depression and alleviate anxiety attacks. It does not cause brain damage, as the popular cultural myth says. The problem with it is that it oxidizes the b12 in your blood, which is very important. Over time, with habitual use, it can cause serious neuropathy, and nervous system issues. Using it a few times is perfectly safe (as long as you’re sitting down). It is the depletion of the b12 because of habitual use that is the danger because it’s really hard to build back.
To be clear - he’s not using whippets like your buddies from high school, he’s using MEDICAL GRADE nitrous oxide. What’s the difference, same compound - different grade. Think street level heroin Vs pharmacy grade opiates.
What’s he is doing is definitely worst for you (long term) then street level whippets due to the way it’s administered. It’s not a quick head rush that last for 5 mins and then you need another hit. Medical grade nitrous is administered slowly, which makes the high last longer and when it wears off it’s way less harsh; which in my opinion is more dangerous bc if you’re not having withdrawals, you’ll never want to quit.

I've done car grade, food grade, and medical grade and can tell you the only real difference is the taste and the cost. Car grade being lowest quality and medical being highest due to there being less impurities in the medical grade, but that does not mess with the potency in any way.

Because the goal of nitrous is to completely sedate the patient. Ye isn’t being completely sedated, the rouge dentist is taking him right to the edge of sedation. Not quite correct. Nitrous Gas from a dentist and from a whip cream charger differ in 3 main ways.
Firstly, the gas coming straight from a canister, can be cold and cause damage from frostbite. (Rapidly expanding gas is freezing cold)
Dentists will always use a solution of Nitrous Oxide mixed with at least 30% air, ensuring the patient always has oxygen. This means that the patient won’t experience hypoxia, however in a recreational setting, they can pass out because their brains aren’t getting enough oxygen, possibly leading to brain cell damage.
Lastly, gas from cream chargers, may have microscopic pieces of aluminum or other metals, and also industrial, although food grade, lubricants. Which is why a heavily used Nitrous Oxide canister will have a yellowish grease in it. Though these things are safe to eat (say in whipped cream) they definitely are not to inhale
i was having dental surgery (2nd operation) and they gave me laughing gas. at one point, i think i had a little too much because my vision blurred slightly before my entire field of vision zoomed out into a small box that was floating and waving around a black background, along with the surgeon and the other two womens voices starting to repeat multiple times. not like an echo, but like a recording. so one would say "can you hand me that? thank you" and then i would hear: "Can you hand me that? Thank you. Can you hand me that? Thank you." etc. it was about a 10 second moment that replayed itself, I assume just before the gas took hold too much. they asked if I was alright (probably because my eyes were closing or something I assume) and when I only made soft murmurs they stopped everything and took the gas mask away, gently fanning me. the room zoomed back in and I had actually gotten the impression that I had traveled back in time to the 1st operation (which was several days if not a week or two ago). i was also crying a little (not like whining just tears). it took me a minute to recover, I cant quite remember if they finished right then or if I had to keep going but they were very sweet and did a great job so whatever ig

Nitrous oxide is a dissociative anesthetic with similar effects to ketamine although much more short lived. Infrequent recreational use in moderation is not especially dangerous but chronic use can lead to extreme vitamin B12 deficiency because it stops your body from being able to absorb B12 properly, vitamin B12 is vital to maintaining the myelin sheath which protects nerves (like the rubber sleeve around a cable). This is why chronic abuse of nitrous oxide can lead to such extensive nerve damage and even paralysis. This nerve damage can take a long long time to recover from and depending how extensive the damage is, you may never fully recover.

I once took nitrous gas during surgery. I accidentally inhaled way too much when they told me to breath normally. I normally take deep breaths so I didnt get what they really wanted me to do. And they were actually right. After around 2-4minutes, you start giggling uncontrollably, but after that, it becomes making you feel your fingers and maybe thr whole body vibrate whole they are very numb. For me, it was a horrible experience. It was painful and I completely did not like it. I also ended up vomiting 10minutes into surgery (the surgery took 15min). It made me feel really high, but not in a satisfying way, more of a painful way. As if your parents woke you up at 4 am to drag you at that time to go do some work with them, but worse. I also couldnt eat for the whole day because I neither had any appetite nor was I able to digest properly. 100% not recommended. Literally a deadly poison for the male psyche, just like alcohol. Hope you dont experience the same thing I did

pro-tip dont do auto grade NOS, it has some sulfer thing mixed with the gas that makes it way more toxic then normal nos. Dont do nitrous (it rules) but if you do stick to food grade, take long breaks between use and supplement the heck outta b12!
That's chemistry, chemicals work differently depending on the context, yes it is used as a fuel in cars, and so is alcohol.
That doesn't necessarily mean it's dangerous though, that's a chemical reaction that happens.

Only because it’s not legal (in my country now it is), doesn’t mean you should put all the blame on Marijuana as THE gateway drug. Sorry for just picking that out, but I hate this narrative. Alcohol is way worse in my opinion. It’s very hypocritical, not from you especially, but we have like so many narrow-minded politicians, who, now that Marijuana is legal in Germany, act like it’s the end of the world, but in the same sentence say: „O‘zapft is!“ and celebrate things like the Oktoberfest, only because it’s „tradition“ (looking at you Markus Söder). To some extent you are correct, and definitely no one should be advocating someone to drink or smoke as an alternative to weed. Alchohol and cigarettes are harmful to you, and each individual needs to decide what is or is not worth that harm.
But at the same time, numerous studies have shown that marijuana has a negative impact on brain development in young people (particularly memory), and greatly increases the chance of people with the genetic markers for schizophrenia developing the condition. It won't *kill* you (though smoking as opposed to edibles/vaping it can cause lung cancer just like all forms of inhaled smoking) but it can make certain mental and psychological conditions worse to the point that quality of life is greatly reduced.
Weed *should* be legal, of course. Weed's status as an illegal drug was much more harmful to society than any side effects from the drug. But I just don't like a lot of the rhetoric around it being that it has 0 negative effects. I saw a few friends in college in California just after recreational weed was legalized smoke themselves into oblivion while reacting extremely negatively if I suggested they take break or reduce their intake.

Fairly sure alcohol is the gateway. I went from alcohol to experimenting with other 'things'. Good thing that for me, this 'experimenting' was short-lived and I only tried marijuana and some other thing I didn't even know what it was. To this day, I stick to alcohol and if I'm at a party and MJ is being passed around... don't mind if I do. However, I know many people who didn't quit experimenting and are now simply users of various stay-away stuff, if you know what I mean?
