  • One of my earliest memories as a "gunner" is longing to own a Weatherby rifle. I think a lot of you share my love of Weatherby rifles and I hope you enjoy this look at these excellent firearms. On the table I have different Weatherbys including a Mark 5 and a Vanguard. I also have on display, and discuss, some interesting cartridges. I ask you...is there a bad Weatherby? Share your opinion with me down below and don't forget to follow the links for more USOG. Remember to subscribe and thanks for watching. Keep safe out there.

I like this one .. The town i grew up in had a Weatherby dealer out of the 6 stores in business and once a month back in the late 1950's and into the 1960's i would stop at the Weatherby dealer about once a month to look over the collection .. The Weatherby rifles to me were top notch in quality and workmanship and i told myself one day i'm going to buy one ..I remember at the time my Dad thought one of those was way too much money when you could buy model 70 for $124.00 or a Remington 700 for around the same ..So as time passed and i saved my money and i bought a Weatherby in .224 as i wanted a ctg close to the 22/250 in performance and the .224 is just that .. What a sweet quality rifle that would shoot very accurate .. You are correct the Weatherby rifles Mark V were made in Germany by J. P. Sauer & Sons who also built the fine Colt Sauer bolt rifles that were of excellent quality too .. I'm very happy with my Weatherby rifle to me there was nothing like a Weatherby ..I hunted with hunters who used the Weatherby 300 magnum for mostly elk , i never seen a bull walk away from that cartridge it would reach out there and deliver the results .. In fact it was 9 years ago i met a fellow at the range who had a Weatherby 30/378 now i was impressed with that ctg, of course he asked if i wanted to fire it , oh yes i would like to try it .. He had 1" thick steel plates hung up @400 yards his scope had marks for 200,300,400 and he told me which mark to use , oh my i'll tell you what those 190 grain bullets just paper punched those steel plates , that was fun..His favorite load was 119 grains of a certain powder ... off the bench it really wasn't near as bad as i thought the recoil would be .. You did a very good job , well done .. thanks

Ahh a fellow Weatherby connesseur! (sp?) My eyes lit up when I read the title of the video. I too have longed for a Weatherby since my early adolescense years (I'm 51 now). I remember having in my desk in 6th grade a gun magazine with an article on the .340 Weatherby cartridge saying it could be the most versatile cartridge ever (the tops of the desks we had flipped up so you could keep books, papers, etc. in them). The article went on to say it is powerful enough on its own to take any of the largest, most dangerous beasts on earth, along with being downloaded to hunt deer and smaller fauna. I have wanted a Weatherby Mark V Deluxe in .340 Weatherby Magnum ever since. One could argue that the Mk V Deluxe is among the most beautiful rifles ever made. Simply gorgeous. At around $2500, a fair price as well for such a fine rifle. One day I WILL own one....one day....... Btw, AWESOME VIDEO!! And what tremor?? Youre fine brother. No one's bothered by it...whatever it is. I can't tell anything's wrong?

Thank you for your kindness and sharing the Weatherby life story. I'm certain you'll have a Weatherby soon - all good things to those who wait. Lately I handled 2 that would be Grade 7 if they were Turkish walnut - all for what amounts to a very modest price considering... Anyway, I'm with you and look forward to which cal. you choose. Mike, I would definitely say that your channel is one of the best. Far from “ragged edge”. Regarding Weatherby rifles, back in the late 1970’s as a teen, we had a family friend who was an avid hunter and in particular, bear hunter. He had a large collection of Weatherby rifles and stuffed Grizzlies. He invited my folks and I to dinner and showed me his collection of Weatherby rifles. I don’t recall how many he had, but there were a lot and at the time, I think I was more interested in his daughter than his fine collection. He told us many bear hunting stories in Alaska and in one story, he and his pilot of a small single engine float plane ended up in Soviet airspace where they landed and bagged a bear on some island. Then quickly loaded the bear on the plane and got back to the US. He always said that Weatherby was the rifle to have for hunting. He has long since past on, not sure whatever happened to his collection. As always, I enjoyed your video. Cheers.

Quality video, please don’t sell yourself short. The only thing lacking in your video was omission of the .257 weatherby magnum, it was Roy’s favorite (and is my favorite) cartridge. Not only is it one of the most iconic and best selling weatherby cartridges but it is only now over seventy years later that is is being edged out by the ballistics of newer 6.5s like the prc. The .257 is the bigger badder grandpa of all the .25 cal and 6.5 mm round it’s still an exceptional hunting cartridge and really deserves a place in any conversation about weatherby.

I’ve owned 4 Mark V’s, still own 3 Vanguards and have owned more Vanguards than I can remember off the too of my head. The Mark V’s have never been anything but reliable and accurate as are the Vanguards. But given the choice I will take a Vanguard. The two lug system is more than strong enough as history has proven and provides far more primary extraction and seating power in the cams than a multi lug system. The more lugs you have the more camming power you lose. When Weatherby went from the classic polished bolt with straight flutes on the Mark V to the oh so trendy spiral flutes and black bolt that was the final nail for me with the Mark V. It, to me, lost its distinctiveness. Just my opinion. Interestingly that Howa makes the Vanguard and also used to make the Mark V. It is a great book too. Read mine a couple times now. Really liked the old school ammo boxes far better than the new style.

@@handle--729 My Winchester XPR in 300wsm shoots MOA also. I've shot it out to 500 yards. My handloads with hornady 178eldx bullets shoot well. It's not bad for a rifle I found on sale for $275.

Are you saying that the vanguard is better than the mark V I only look for accuracy when I buy a rifle because I often compete in matches.

One of my earliest longings too! I can totally relate, "when I was young and had no money and no guns". I think I still have my 1971 Weatherby catalog with the original drool marks!

Back in the sixties I would read the Outdoor Life magazines in my elementary school library. They always had Weatherby adds in them. Fast forward forty five years and I see a Mark V Deluxe at a pawn shop in gorgeous condition with the Signature scope. That .300 Wthby. Magnum kicks like a mule and is completely useless on our Florida deer, but I'll never sell it.

I see you threw in my beloved, beaten old $100 Mauser. 🙂
Have to say Ive never run across Wetherbys. They're rare around here, or no one ever sells them.
And no need to apologize for the tremor! I, like many others, was worried you had Parkinson's, but I doubt anyone is actually bothered by it.
Oh yeah, and you got about 2000 views in about an hour according to what I see, so I guess your videos are better than you think.

I am a long range bench rest shooter, all of my guns have been built by a gunsmith for whatever round that interests at the time. I had a rifle built for a 300 weatherby and I have won more matches with it than anything else. Weatherby was ahead of all the others with his case design and the extra powder that it can hold due to the fact the the shoulders are much steeper. I don't know much about the quality of the rifles but they look good and I have never heard a bad report about one. From what I can see, it comes down to the quality of the barrel. If the barrel is good then you can bet the action will be good, I have never heard of a good barrel on a bad action. Anyway I might buy one for hunting, I don't think I could go wrong.

: ) It was Lawrence Ordnance - I remembered from viewers on the channel. What a great shop and great people! I'm going to get over the great waters again somehow. If you go there and if they have not changed things much - note the "gun fragrance" in that shop - it should be bottled - something like Rangoon Oil and arsenal but with a twist. I mentioned it to another customer at the time and he said in that wonderful Australian way "I do mate; but we're both nuts." 😂 Take care.

Oh, man, a great rifle and including looks too. That Martini Cadet, an attractive looking gun, receiver especially. But that lever, whew, too long looking but must be important for proper operation of the action. You present a lot of really interesting info along with the stories to go along with it all. Great stuff, thanks a lot.

Really enjoy your videos, worked for a gunsmith as a youth, been hooked on collecting ever since. I have an old 1903A3 all original...cleaning it I had the butt pkaye off, found a peice of paper folded up neatly and placed on the stock was a person's name and address....looked up the person he had passed away several years prior to me purchasing the weapon. Best regards Shoe in SW Oregon.
