  • This is a Service Call where I found a Bad Compressor by checking for continuity from the compressor terminals to the grounding circuit. The breaker was popping immediately when turned on. I explain where I started testing and where it took me along with how to diagnose the problem with a multimeter.

    Great Question! Continuity meaning the wires are touching the ground. If any of the wires that you are powering with voltage are touching the frame then the breaker will immediately pop do to high amperage from a direct short. You should however have resistance from one winding terminal to each of the other two winding terminals. Check out the video on checking a condenser fan for more on measuring resistance on 240v psc motors such as a compressor or condenser fan motor. Thank you for your Comments, they are appreciated!th-cam.com/video/DmFSQbowYIg/w-d-xo.html

    i believe one can check from the common to run winding and get a reading and then from common to start winding. add the readings and if that matches the reading between the start and run winding the compressor is good as long as no reading to ground in this instance. Great Video!

    I purchased your book as general contractor. We have gone through four HVAC techs that don't seem to be able to install a mini split heat pump properly. One unit has a bad compressor and my plumber will be replacing a compressor in a Midea split. He is suggested we do an R-11 flush in the system because of acid build up. My initial research is showing me that method is old and not longer suggested in new systems. Do you have any thoughts on this?

    Why is it bad when you check the continuity from the start winding to ground? I thought when there was continuity it meant it was good. Can you please explain more about that. Thanks.

    usually replacing a compressor is costly. That is when you look at the age of the unit itself and ask the customer if they want to replace the compressor only or the unit. If the compressor is bad on a new unit or does not operate, part may be under warranty.

    In my area in Easley sc I rarely ever see one anymore.

    • @acservicetechchannel
      @acservicetechchannel  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You rarely see any bad compressors? I see them bad for even the simple instances of where people install bad digital thermostats without 5 minutes delays and the compressor keeps getting called before it even reaches 5 minutes from when it shuts off to when it turns on. Other instances are bad oil return, acid build up, or fin degradation. You probably just have the luck of the draw not to see them. Thanks for the comment Phillip!

    What if I get 315 k ohms to ground but no continuity and the other two leads have 25 m ohms but again no continuity to the ground

    • @acservicetechchannel
      @acservicetechchannel  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Make sure you disconnect the wires of the compressor from everything else before testing and you should read 0.L Maybe also double check with another meter. If this is powered, does it just pop the breaker or fuse? If so, the compressor is shot, but make sure the compressor is disconnected first before testing, thanks

      AC Service Tech LLC yes the breaker was tripped when I arrived, capacitor was dead I replaced the cap and tested the bare terminals before turning it on. I was getting ohms on all three to ground and when testing across the terminals I was getting crazy high resistance and it wasn’t Adding up.. when trying to start the unit the fan was running and the compressor wasn’t but the breaker wasn’t tripping. I condemned the compressor although a continuity test never made a sound to ground. Just a little confusing because resistance to ground should trip it and resistance should show continuity. Any thoughts on this would help. thanks man huge fan of your channel..

      I never use continuity because it is not as specific as looking at the resistance. It will only beep once if it is up past a certain ohm reading, thanks

    Thnx for your many informational videos. Always enjoy them... My AC compressor will not start & it is not shorted to ground. I get a really low amp draw < 2 amps during test. Is that possibly sign of bad compressor? Trying to determine if the compressor can be revived :o(...

    • @acservicetechchannel
      @acservicetechchannel  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      If your resistance readings are good and windings are not shorted to ground, you could try adding an SPP6 -amzn.to/2BdyFX8- to see if that will give it the extra power it needs to start. Make sure it is getting a good voltage and has a good capacitor before that, thanks

      Capacitor was first i cked & no issue. It did cross my mind to ck resistance after the fact. However, I did try the 521 hard start kit but it still would not budge :o( appeared most likely a shot compressor. Input anyone?
