Since I am finishing my medical studies soon the thing completely blew my mind. The moment I saw the magnets being close to each other i thought to myself - "hey, that's how the chondroid tissue in our joints work!". The large molecules called proteoglycans contain many branches of mucopolysaccharides (the "-"). This polarizes water molecules that slide inbetween the layers of our joints (*) so that they don't actually touch each other and are able to withstand the constant stress (friction).
This may solve the problem orthopedics has to constantly face, namely the fact that todays prosthetic implants are atcually quite short-lasting. The estimated time of life of prosthetic implant is 15-20 years before it becomes rubbed off. Every orthopaedist (at least here, in Poland) had that dilema once - what to do with a patient who needs to undergo a hip or knee replacement, but is relatively young (40-50 y.o.) and his or hers estimated time of life is actually longer than the life of a prosthetic implant?
Do you have some more information about the actual "maxel" size? What "resolutions" are archieavable? What is the closest archieavable spring distance?
(*) To illustrate. Let's say the water molecule looks like that: (--+) and the joint is like: -- ]. The static charge in our joint is like: -- ] (+--)(--+) [ -- . Hope my little scheme put more light to my previous words.

Ok, so I'm trying to make sense of this one. These guys are taking the neodymium discs prior to their being magnetized, and somehow their machine must be able to focus an incredibly narrow magnetic field onto the surface to achieve magnetization of only the selected 'maxel' area? The precision alone is incredible. I would love to see the internals of the field generator. I wonder if they are not careful in the patterns they choose if the magnets can be given massive internal stresses that make them want to break themselves apart. Another thing: I had always assumed that the polarity of a magnet really doesn't play much of a role in how strongly it attracts ferromagnetic materials, but I now see I've been looking at it narrow mindedly as with these magnets the polarity can manipulate the intensity of the field itself over a given distance. Shoot, you show magnets at 5:00 that have had their fields manipulated for a tight reach, I wonder if the opposite is possible? A pattern of magnetization that causes multiple fields to converge at a specific point in space that is above the magnet's surface, like the focal point of a parabola? I would just love to play around with a few of these magnets and see how diamagnetic materials react to the tight reaching fields. My curiosity has been piqued. Thanks for the brain candy Destin

I think a standard single field would be the longest range orientation, since the opposite appears to be true, and it makes sense, but I'm no magnetic wizard.
+pheredeath Yes, probably the longest field is accomplished by simple polarity, but length is not what I'm most curious about. I wonder if a magnet can be made where the highest intensity of it's field is located at a point above it's surface. Objects attracted to such a magnet would be held some distance away, suspended in the air where the fields converge.

It is a specialized product that is used / will be used in specialized applications. Don't expect it in everyday life though - where would you really need it? Door locks and handles? Yeah, not that there is a real impeding need for polymagnets. Most probably you won\'t be seeing polymagnets as they will be inside machines and applications where you hardly ever look.
Actually, this kind of magnets are used in planar loudspeakers, I think like since 80th?
Have you ever heard of a tape recorder or magnetic memory? It exists for almost a century.

I'd say that it is of some value for us humans to distinguish what probably has existed independent of us (if there is even such a "thing" ) from things we arranged in a way we can use them as technology, like e.g. the technology on the basis of which we are communicating. This technology is among other inventions based on the invention to store information with magnets.

+Jaume Riera A UK uni did a contactless magnetic gearbox for wind turbines. It meant that string gusts of wind wouldn't break the gearbox the way it would a conventional gearbox. There's more info online if you Google for it :)

I remember as a small boy in the early 60's when a telephone repairman came around to do some work on a nearby utility pole. I watched enthralled as the lineman went about his work. He must've been a father, because he saw me watching and probably understood the interest as I questioned him about the gaffs he used to climb the pole, the harness belt and his tools. Long story short, he took the time to talk with this little boy and as a parting gift, he gave me two "u" shaped magnets. I was hooked! In that moment that man advance my hunger for knowledge, and created a love for magnets that still lives in this now old grandpa's mind. Keep doing what you're doing Destin. It will pay exponential dividends that you cannot imagine. Thanks!

Traditional magnets would make that a bad idea, just cause they wouldn't last long enough to be worth it.
Electromagnets are a good possibility though.

Well yes, but you need said friction to produce a force that opposes air resistance.
They could do like a key and a doorlock that only opens with the exact magnet pattern

I don't think people understand how big this can actually be. The applications for more precise magnetical control is huge. Science, medical, energy. You name it.
Could you make magnetic lock and keys? Where You create a magnet with a random design and then create another magnet to perfectly complement it, and the only thing that can unlock the door is something that perfectly attracts?

This is a thing like it exists. My dad had padlocks with these magnet keys and you'd slap on this magnet and the lock would pop open. I never really understood it but i'm sure it's at least somewhat related

if you had strong enough magnets you could in theory use the springs to replace conventional car suspensions
It also means you could make joints and things attached to other things, but separated sort of floating, like something you'd see in science fiction.
I don't think this would work. Suspension consists of a spring and damper assembly. Permanent magnets can only replicate the behaviour of the spring, not the damper as far as I am aware. Furthermore, why bother? Springs are probably lighter and cheaper than the magnets.
GM already has something similar to that in there high performance vehicles
putting high resistance coils around the magnets would lead to the desired dampening effect.
I bet that would make a smooooth ride too. Literally hovering.

Not really, all you would need is a magnetic viewing film on the lock to see the pattern and make the complementary key
Very good idea. Putting secrecy issues aside, it makes very convinient type of key.
It can be "read" by hall sensor array in case secrecy is needed,
but i bet another mechanical system would be much more usefull - imagine something like new type of electric box key.
Pros are that it can make keyhole hermetically sealed AND still mechanical system. No dust, no moisture, no rust...
@@ramimerza644 well that's only if it's purely mechanical. If you instead have a scanner detect whatever pattern there is, and then compare that to a data preset kept securely then a magnetic viewing film wouldn't show anything.

There aren't any encryption cyphers that obfuscate themselves either.

One of the most mind- bending facts about magnets is that the magnetic field is not attached to the magnet. Meaning that rotating the magnet around its symmetry axis does not rotate the field.
This can be demonstrated by separating two closely spaced disk magnets with a piece of paper, or cardboard, or glass, then rotating one of them. If the field is pinned to the magnet, the other one should also rotate. But it doesn't.
I did my own experiment to verify this. You could show this with much better visualizations than I could, and reach a much wider audience. I used two neodymium disk magnets, separated by a layer of cardboard, and spun one of them with an electric drill, while the magnetically connected one remained stationary.
You could make locks like this, with different magnets which lock up to different magnets

This "MAXELS" can also be found on a hard drive discs (HDD) of computers (not SSD). They save data in a very similar way this "maxel printer" works. If you look at 8:05 you can see red and blue dots on a disc. Example: On a HDD red is binary state 1 and blue is binary state 0. So when the "disc analyser" arm of HDD moves to a certain point on a disc/certain dot it reads the state. Combining this dots into a combination you get data. :)
This reminds me of my childhood obsession with magnets, i used to strip stereo speakers to get the magnets out and play with them. I still have them somewhere in the house
