jesus christ everyone is in the comments like all saying that either mike portnoy played the drums or the rev did so i am just gonna leave this here in case it helps. As the band was demoing thr music for the album the rev made base tracks that were of low recording quality (shitty electric kit) and they didn't have all the small flares he would have put in the final recorded version for most of the what would become the drum tracks on the nightmare album, then suddenly the rev passed so mike portnoy was brought in to bring what jimmy had started to life on the album, portnoy than copied what jimmy made and added flares like the rev would have, did jimmy write the majority of the parts? yes he did and he did a terrific job but don't shit on portnoy saying he did nothing becuase that's just not true, he brought the tracks to life and in sure had jimmy been around to see the final product he would be very happy with it.
It’s a common mixing technique Andy Wallace does. You can hear the real snare in there, and he uses the snare to trigger a super compressed reverb to make it sound that way. It’s basically like adding a sample to the snare that gives it that long decay. Sounds kind of odd isolated like it is here, but it sounds awesome in the mix.
Jimmy was hell of a composer and wrote almost all of that, that´s pretty clear, but of course there are some small Portnoy "tricks" here and there, all over the album.
Jimmy would have loved to hear Mike's take on his songs :D there are a couple of songs where he didn't make any changes though. Fiction is one of them, I think
Gabriel Matheus Yea the rev wrote fiction and I think it was the last song he wrote before he died. But I could be wrong. Some people think its actually his suicide note but again I could be wrong
Well we have to say Jimmy kicked fucking ass at drumming and yes Mike did make a couple of changes if u listen to the nightmare demo that's Jimmy drumming and u can tell from this track and the demo there kinda the same but Mike portnoy was Jimmys inspiration
You do realise that the Rev wrote the drums and recorded the demos on all the songs on this album bar Fiction I believe. Portnoy simply played them and made any changes that the whole band approved. Besides that, Mike Portnoy was a drummer that the Rev looked up to and based his drumming on.
@@wildan29ijudin94 yea they are demos though the rev would have added some of his tricks in the final product too sadly they never made it to the final product, portnoy did an amazing job accenting avenged sevenfolds music style, was definitely the best drummer after revs passing to continue it for this album
Mike played on the album. He said himself that the band showed him Jimmy's demo tracks so in respect to him, Mike kept pretty close to what jimmy played.

Well, he didn’t necessarily write all of them. Such as this song. Jimmy wrote almost all of the drum tracks, but Mike put a few little things in there, and stuff like that.
Yup, Mike only played their songs with exactly same beats. And Rev wrote them all. He was not only one of greatest drummers but he was badass artist :D
Jimmy always had the most awesome snare sounds. His early snare was like lars ulrich's snare (except it was played by someone who knew what they were doing), and I fucking love it, and then he had a bit of a standard sounding snare on self titled/ditr, and if you listen to the LBC performance of beast and the harlot jimmys snare (or lack thereof) absolutely ruined it. And this snare is just... wow. It sounds so evil snd sinister somehow, it fits this song perfectly, I fucking love it.
There's some serious drum replacement going on here. Still the beat that was originally written. Would've made that snare drum sound bigger personally but it works in the full track and it's what their producer would've wanted.
@@jinkim664 Think a deeper snare is what was meant rather than a 'bigger' snare sound? Cause that snare sounds like the drive by that finished off Biggie. I know what they mean though, sounds too 'thin' to be the same snare in the full track!
Listen closely at 3:41 , its a bad punch in/out, one of the crashes from before the punch-in can be heard decaying yet wasn't hit the measure before......
he wrote the drums but sadly never got to record a final of this song there is a demo of this song with the rev playing it but mike portnoy played drums on this album

the snare is so brutal, like a gunshot. awesome!!!
never heard a song with this snare sound, atleast as far as i know. it is weird how well it fits in the whole song.
Its a rimshot
Shane Thys listen to some songs from Images and Words. Has a very similar sharp snare sound
Reverb my friend

I love those triplets during the solo. They add so much to the track overall.
Jordan Triggs Quadruplets
some serious reverb on the snare right there
Damn, you can't even hear this HUGE snare reverb in the mix... It's genius.

It has that Beast And The Harlot vibe

That awesome that this drummer plays with loss snares on hit drum.
0.75 speed makes for one easy going kickass ride!

best drum composer.. no doubt
God I love how Mike's crashes sound so dark and evil like that! Anyone know what his crashes are?
Sabian that's all I know

sabian cymbals are shit cymbals :) meinl cymbals are beasties :)

Nightmare! (Now your nightmare comes to life)
Dragged ya down below
Down to the devil's show
To be his guest forever
Peace of mind is less than never
Hate to twist your mind
But God ain't on your side
An old acquaintance severed
Burn the world your last endeavor
Flesh is burning
You can smell it in the air
'Cause men like you have
Such easy soul to steal (steal)
So stand in line while
They ink numbers in your head
You're now a slave
Until the end of time here
Nothing stops the madness,
Turning, haunting, yearning
Pull the trigger
You should have known
The price of evil
And it hurts to know
That you belong here, yeah
Ooh, it's your fuckin' nightmare
Can't wake up in a sweat
'Cause it ain't over yet
Still dancing with your demons
Victim of your own creation
Beyond the will to fight
Where all that's wrong is right
Where hate don't need a reason
Loathing self-assassination
You've been lied to
Just to rape you of your site
And now they have the nerve
To tell you how to feel (feel)
So sedated as they
Medicate your brain
And while you slowly
Go insane they tell ya
"Given with the best intentions
Help you with your complications"
You should have known
The price of evil
And it hurts to know
That you belong here, yeah
No one to call
Everybody to fear
Your tragic fate is looking so clear, yeah
Oh, it's your fuckin' nightmare
Fight
Not to fail
Not to fall
Or you'll end up like the others
Die
Die again
Drenched in sin
With no respect for another
Down
Feel the fire (fire)
Feel the hate
Your pain is what we desire
Lost
Hit the wall (wall)
Watch you crawl (crawl)
Such a replaceable liar
And I know you hear their voices (calling from above)
And I know they may seem real (these signals of love)
But our life's made up of choices (some without appeal)
They took for granted your soul
And it's ours now to steal
You should have known
The price of evil
And it hurts to know
That you belong here, yeah
No one to call
Everybody to fear
Your tragic fate is looking so clear, yeah
Ooh, it's your fuckin' nightmare
It pisses me off that not very many people realize that Jimmy wrote all the Drum tracks before he passed. Portnoy didnt write any of the songs.
KidWhoDrums Jimmy wrote them. Mike recorded them
Well, he didn’t necessarily write all of them. Such as this song. Jimmy wrote almost all of the drum tracks, but Mike put a few little things in there, and stuff like that.
Jimmy wrote the basic beat and some basic fills. Portnoy expanded them.
it sounds like a completely different song
Carter Wasley same, it sounds like a more upbeat song, but in reality its the opposite
If you ever listened to Dream Theater before, you already know Portnoy modified this song to fit his playing for sure.
the bass drum during the guitar solo is freakin amazing!
Yup, Mike only played their songs with exactly same beats. And Rev wrote them all. He was not only one of greatest drummers but he was badass artist :D
5:27 absolute🔥
Yesssssssssss
This drum track sounds fire
Mike is also a beast on drums
No he's not. The Rev only recorded the demo tape. Mike recorded all of the master tracks for the album by pretty much rehashing Jimmy's recordings.
This is sick!!! I use it as a backing track to play violin to 😍❤
Thanks for making this. Really helps me play it.
