    Matsumoto is currently my favorite manga artist and one of my favorite comic creators in general. I find it funny that whenever I try to recommend his works, particularly Ping Pong, most anime fans always have the same first impression as you "oh this is ugly and not good art." Yet this isnt because Matsumoto is a bad artist rather I think most of them dont get the technical aspects of comic creation. Matsumoto uses an uneven, scraggly line that goes from thick to thin. In turn his characters face/body structure follows the European/American comic style rather than Japanese manga style. More realistic facial proportions, prominent nose, differing cheek/chin/head shapes. The shapes and structure of his characters are not always perfect but for the most part his understanding of emotion and movement are spot on, not the work of an amateur. I'd almost argue the wonkiness and the misshapen people are intentional design aspects because he demonstrates he understands how to draw people accurately enough that the weird shots seem intentional. He also uses less screentone for shading and hatches more than the typical shojo/shonen/seinen. Then his paneling and effects are top notch he really takes advantage of incorporating them into the story and flow of the work. So all together this means his works don't look like a usual manga. Most manga these days have clean, even lines, lots of screentone shading, not really using paneling and effects as part of the story, and the typical manga character style combines to make a work that is opposed in a lot of ways to what people are accustomed too. This is to say nothing of his storytelling. Well, I enjoyed the video and I hope it will get at least some people to take another chance on his work because they are all really great.

      I agree. If anyone were to call him a bad artist, they are severely misinformed. Throughout the story you see some amazing panels, and it's clear that he has every technical ability to draw "cleaner" panels, but that's not the style he's going for, and it's certainly not the main goal of each page to make it look pretty. It's to show that the cleanliness of the characters' drawings are secondary to the story being told, and to the emotions, sweat, and tears that come up on each page.

    I am starting this manga right now. I will be back to give my opinion. One piece is my favorite animanga among the 500 i have watched/read and a "friend" of mine calls it trash and mid. For me, its the greatest story of all time. For him, Ping Pong is the greatest anime out there. I don't think i will have the same opinion as him, but if Oda likes it, it must be good!

    • @PanelFlow
      @PanelFlow  14 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Nice! I read the manga for this video, I didn't watch anything from the anime, so I'm on the opposite side. But yea, I have said for years that I think OP is the greatest work of fiction ever. In one sentence it's because no story has made me feel a greater range of emotions (joy, sadness, excitement, suprise, etc.). There are very few people I know who are anti- one piece who have actually watched it/read it. I think the new studio WIT series will do wonders to fight against the 'it's too long' narrative.

    It's hard for me to say anything more substantial having not read this or seen the anime, but this is another really nice video 😊 I must ask though, what happened to the mic that you used in your first three videos? It's not as important as your writing (which is as great as ever), but I think these videos can be improved with the audio quality you used to have.

    • @PanelFlow
      @PanelFlow  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The mic is the same. I don't know what happened to the audio quality this time, I think the file got messed up somehow. I was looking to get this out before I had to leave for a work thing, so I was in a rock and hard place in regards to re recording the whole thing or just editing it the best I can and run through. Right now I'm just trying to get content out, so if one video takes a hit for some weird file thing/I guess that's the game to play.
      Not going to let it happen again, though. If this channel gets big enough I'll probably just re record and make it higher quality.
      The anime is very cool too! They include some filler stuff, but it's all good quality. Only like 11 episodes I believe.

Never got into any other of the sports manga( if it didnt include martial combat) because i didnt see how they would make it epic. 2 points: Lone Wolf & Cub “…40 pages…” (I can’t remember🤣) of a sword duel without a single word.
    You reported Smile held back, something about feeling guilt in demolishing or stoping others’ hopes & dreams in their match or journey. Does this emotional condition make sense to anyone?
    I’m here to confirm this. As a competitive chess player, I always felt anxiety or guilt when I “took away” their chance of winning. I was a far superior player than my middle school opponents and I was very superior than my high school opponents.
    Even with the cocky “rival” school, their downfall was they had good skills but didn’t respect every opponents, not believing they could be beat 🤣. I treated every match with anxiety with every chance of being beat; then, I realised how bad they (most of them) played. Then I felt guilt for playing them, crushing them.
