Got a great idea. You guys both wear glasses and pretty much have to take those of when wearing those masks. That is a problem for many people with stronger glasses. How about a 'how to' where you incorporate the glasses so you can actually see something when you wear that mask.

Make a design of a mask that incorporates the lenses you have (at appropriate distance from your face, etc.). You can take the lenses and add some masking tape on top so you don't scratch them in the process. Sculpt the mask with the lenses in place (make sure you sculpt a frame/border around them). Make a mold and cast it the same way they did it in the video... then cut out the plastic from the area where the lenses are supposed to be and glue them in from behind (might require some sanding/dremeling or a little bit of epoxy/sugru to make it fit the way you want).
I mean if you can follow this video along and actually make a mask, you shouldn't have too much trouble incorporating some lenses.
If you're still unsure - there's a pretty in-depth video on Stan Winston School site... Bruce D Mitchell made some masks that incorporated goggles... but the process/materials he used are different.

What always amuses me about prop making in the US is the availability and low cost of the materials. The shelves of mold on gear in the opening scene! There is only one place in Ireland that sells Mold on. I get cheaper silicone form the North but there really is not the demand here to allow the low cost. Always funny when I hear " I got this for $4.99 from my local Target" sign.
Yup, same here in Mexico, some products are near impossible to get or prohibitive expensive. But with a lot of research, and creativity one can make do with the things that are available, for example last year I made a mask with paper mache, body filler and whole lot of sanding.
i know the feeling...even here in canada, nowhere you can buy this stuff on shelves. when i got the test kit, it cost 40$ and shipping was 50$

Great work, I've been wanting to get into mask casting for a while, really interesting and you make it look so easy. I've been a artist with pencils and paper for a while but wanted to make a drawing I did of a deer skull into a mask , kinda like Nick's. Thanks for the help.

Soo cool! Kind of overwhelmed with the amount of steps - mixing all the epoxies, powder. I plan on making a mask and scanning it with photogrammetry software and polish it up in blender. Then 3D print it!

I will have to use the cold casting on the Darth Nihilus mask that I make once I do a version 2 of the mold. I have found that a two part jacket mold works a lot better on the half face masks. When I built mine I removed the clay wall so that the jacket/mother mold can undercut the rebound 25. This way it locks the silicone in and you don’t need to use clamps to lock your edges. I should have waited for part two haha! My dad and I used plaster for the mold as a one-use thing. This is a far better system, albeit far more expensive. I also used a mix of fiberglass and bondo because I wanted it to be armored. This is a great prop way though and I cant wait to try it!
Once you use silicone to make molds like this you'll never go back. It's so good!

I use 100 % window silicone for casting and sprayfoam insulation (great-stuff) for my mother molds....flexible and durable and cheeep .
For the print coat you could have used a thinning agent to get the details a little bit easier, tapping the brush on it could possibly add texture you don't want. Naphtha will dissolve monster clay and get the mold really clean. If you had a little bit of soapy water you can rub the silicone with your fingers before it sets to get that smooth as well. It also helps if you had usable keys. When there is no uniformity in the texture of the silicone it can be difficult to seat the silicone in the mother mold and possibly cause deformities. Overall another great video!

This made me remember a scene in Batman Begins. China probably made 10,000 order of these mask with similar process.
But if you freeze this, condensated humid can get involved in vulcanization process and can cause bubbles,isnt it?
i just started using rebound for a project a few weeks ago, and with how runny and drippy it was, i was worried i didn't use it properly...but after watching this, i can see mine turned out pretty well actually! using the clay for the outer shell is a lot better than the fiberglass i used though!

Question if you just wanted a mask without added too much colour would thermoplastic be good. you would sculpting it with clay and just use thermoplastic just to create the mask you want?

You can always start simple and small!
What does it cost to get started?
I imagine buying all the tools, clay, silicone, powders, cups, the head and stuff adds up quickly.

On teh back of the masks can I use plaster? That simple construction plaster or maybe orthopedic plaster bandages
Are you wanting to back the resin cast with plaster or actually cast the mask using plaster instead of resin? You could try doing a cast in plaster but it's MUCH more brittle than resin and will shatter if dropped. Plaster bandages could work but you'd want to be careful with how detailed your mold is, as the plaster bandages won't capture the same level of detail.

2 Questions: 1- What is the approximate supply cost of making one basic resin cast mask ? 2- What is the approximate cost of all base supplies/ equipment to get a “shop” going. (Like the tools and reusable items required?)

So technically it is possible to do this entire process without a pressure chamber? Or is it really necessary for the silicone? I want to get into casting for a long time already, but I keep running into the fact of needing a pressure pot which I don't have.
A pressure pot is a really useful tool but is absolutely not required for the process! We did tons of casting before we had access to a pressure pot. Bill decided to use it in this video because he did have access to it.

Love this tutorial, I'm currently using this process to make a mold of a large paperclay mask I made. I ended up not having enough rebound 25 to completely cover the mask's last layer...I have to order more online. Will it be ok if I let it sit in the shop for a few days while I wait for more rebound to ship in the mail and than make a final last thick layer? It's probably going to be a full week till I can put the last layer...
A W E S O M E, makes me want to run to the shop to buy all the needed stuff. If only knew where I can get all the products in Belgium (EU).
I've noticed you guys pouring silicone and Urethane resin like there is no tomorrow.. But I figured out why..It turns out PU resin and silicone is TWICE as expensive here in the Netherlands!! I calculated that in the US Smooth cast 300 costs (sorry for the conversion) €10.80 per liter, in the Netherlands Smooth cast 300 costs €21.55 per liter!!!!
So almost exactly double! Question; what would you do if all your materials suddenly were twice as expensive?

you went to the trouble to vac the air out of the first layer then used a stipple method to put it on. wont that add back in air to the silicon mix???
Stippling can add a tiny bit of air back in but not enough to be significant.

These turned out fantastic! I have a question about the process. Were the metal powders only brushed in the mold, or were they mixed in the first layer of resin as well?
Both! You don'y always have to add powder to the resin if it's a dark resin, but it helps with the consistency of the coating.
@@punishedprops Right on! I never was sure if adding powder to the mold alone would give enough of a finish to allow polishing (like it might buff right through to raw resin). But you got fantastic results on the masks. I'mma have to experiment.

How would you have attached the teeth if you decided to mold and cast those separately? What kind of glue did you use with the straps?
Probably with super glue or 5 minute epoxy. The glue on the straps is super glue!

cool work, i have an issue abouth the mask thikness. how you do to make the mask the most near to the face surface? i dont like have it to far away.
It's risky to make the mask too thin, otherwise the resin will likely crack. For a mask that fits like a second skin you'll want to look into making one with silicone or latex.
