I think this was an EXCELLENT cake challenge! A lot of home bakers wonder why their cakes don’t turn out looking as good as they want them to, and this video perfectly illustrates why: you need the right tools for the job, people!!
So this video reminded me of this one time when my husband's cousin wanted me to make her wedding cake (I've been a cake decorator for 22 years so I know what I'm doing...ish 🤪🤣) anyways she wanted a huge wedding cake! 9 tiers... oh also it's 6 hours from home... she gave me free range to decorate how ever I wanted! So I baked all the cakes at work, froze all of them and left them in the pans. So I brought all the cake and stuff with us, they had a big kitchen I could use at the reception hall. So we get there I unload all my stuff in the kitchen and start leveling out the cakes and getting them on cardboards then I realize the only tool besides a leveling knife was an offset really freaking small spatula 🤦♀️😲😭 I wanted to cry. Also back story we were in a town of a few thousand people in BFE South Dakota, so no place to get any other tools. So I ice the whole cake with a small offset spatula. It took me forever! It turned out just fine in the end and I was the only one who knew what I did 🤣🤣🤣 I will never forget my spatula again! Love this orange cake, looks beautiful and I can imagine taste freaking awesome! 😋 ❤❤❤
Wedding “disaster”: Apparently I almost had a falling apart cake too! I didn’t find this out till about a month after the wedding! But - apparently when they delivered the cake, it had no support (3 tiered) in it so it was tilting. Our family friend/coordinator/flourish turned it away! Said they had two hours to present a proper cake - and about 5 minutes before the reception… the fixed cake arrived! He decorated it with flowers from the ceremony and it was lovely. I never noticed. They didn’t tell me because there were already a lot of emotions because my dad almost didn’t make it to the wedding due to a health scare. He did make it though ☺️
Wedding fails: my ring bearer lost my wedding ring. My dad crafted mine and my spouse's wedding bands and didn't finish till the morning of. So he shows up with them and holds onto them till right before we're all gunna line up for the isle walk upon which he hands them to the ring bearer to put in the box (our ring bearer was 10-12 ish at the time) I had already given him my engagement ring which had my Oma's diamond in it. We get thru the ceremony till the ring part, my spouse's ring and my engagement ring are in the box.. my wedding ring is no where to be seen. Spouse chalks it up to dad not finishing it, tho I know he did he showed it to me, but we don't call attention to it. During family photos I bring it up to my dad.. cue chaos. Everyone who hadn't left for the reception in all their finery are in the grass looking, a friend has left to go get her metal detector, dad is sitting on the hill stunned, and I'm getting grass stains on my wedding dress sitting on the ground crying. I have never had a moment where I realized JUST how loved I was until I'm wiping mascara away and watching my best friends and cousins crawling around searching. Group of them went back after the reception to look again, the friend with the metal detector missed the reception to keep looking for it. My bridesmaid rented a metal detector and went back the next day and looked for hours before her flight back home... we never found the ring. Dad made me a new one for our anniversary. And honestly I only look back at that moment to remember how loved I felt.
The moral of this story: Any job is easier when you have the right tools. My daddy taught me that when he raised me working on cars side by side with him. Now I use that mantra in the kitchen as a DIY baker. Hey JJR, why are the nails on one hand polished but not the other?? Inquiring minds want to know! (Nice color btw!)
@@YouveBeenDesserted the trick I use is my hand that holds the little wand thing stays still (it rests on the table or something) and I move my good hand instead hehehe Also, sparkles forgive more than a full colour :) (yes, the sprinkles for your nails lol)
@@YouveBeenDesserted A cotton swab with some nail polish remover will fix any painting outside the lines troubles! And I agree with CloverHighFive, a bit of glitter will go a long way to cover up any imperfections.
add together a heavy 3 tiered wedding cake for my niece, insufficient Dowling, a small car trunk, a thirty minute car ride and 90 plus degree July heat and you get a collapsed wedding cake in the trunk! So 2 hours before the reception I walk into the country club and say to the food and beverage director, "I need a bakery and fast"! I had them make a dummy cake similar to what they wanted with sheet cake to serve in the kitchen! The only salvageable part was the very top tier! They had one there before the reception! Now I still had to attend the wedding, but I didn't tell my niece till after the ceremony! She saw me sitting in the church, visibly upset and thought to herself that someone had died and we weren't saying anything to her! She was just happy that everyone was OK and that there would be a cake there! The best part was that the bakery didn't "rape" me on the price for the cake, I was just happy that I had a credit card! When the time to cut the cake came, my immediate family, that were the only ones who knew, jokingly said, " Now lets all go out to Brians car to cut the cake". I can laugh about it NOW, not so funny then! I didn't make another cake for more then 10 years!
I use a butterknife for a lot of my frosting! I've only got a huge offset spatula and my mom's old butterknife works pretty well as a sub for a small offset spatula in the meantime. It's got a really heavy handle with the blade coming out of the centre so there's technically a small offset that seems to work pretty well. I use a long plastic ruler (that I only use for cakes) for a scraper - not perfect but it's OK. And my partner built me a turntable which is sooooo good but you can also take the wheels and glass plate out of your microwave and use those on the counter for an emergency replacement turntable. I've got a list of baking tools including a stainless steel scraper and a little offset spatula on my Christmas wish list, here's hoping Santa is paying attention!
I loved this video! It reminded me of every cake I've ever made because I don't have any fancy tools. Granted they never came out this pretty, but in my experience any wonkiness can be fixed by smashing more frosting on the offending areas with butter knives. And remember to take plenty of DONK! breaks.
Hello I was in search in new content and guess what I found you guys and I have been beige watching and it surely helps with my anxiety and that takes me back to those days when I use to watch cake boss on tlc and wanted to become baker
JJR, you are the best. I swear I made your vegan chocolate cake recipe, it tasted just like the cake I usually make! Keep up the good work! I also have a question- where do you put the garbage cake? I ate all of mine when I made the cake! ❤️❤️❤️
I absolutely love this challenge, because this has been all of my baking from 2013 to 2019, when I was finally able to start collecting bit by bit better tools. Even so, most of my tools are also DIY, lol.
was crying and i had to go back home and take the middle tier out because it was basically 3/4 of the cake now. Thank goodness the event was close to home. I call the event planner and tell her what happened and that i was gonna be late because i had to fix the cake. So i put the top tier on top of the bottom tier, so now its just 2 tiers and i put the other cake in a separate box. I get to the event and i speak to the event planner and shes like “theres nothing wrong with the cake”. So i tell her “its suppose to be a 3 tier”. I’m telling her i will give her a discount and shes like well no because u did bring all 3 tiers (just one was about 3/4). This lady decides to pray for and ask God to continue blessing my hands and using me to do what i love….omg was i crying like a baby. I feel like it was a reminder that God is always on my side. It was a christian family.
Wow, you read my comment about kids designing a cake! That was in response to you asking for ideas for upcoming videos. I feel like a celebrity! I loved the orange cake even though it stressed you out.
My Wedding DIY chaos: My bridesmaids had little poems they were supposed to read, but the Officiant typed them up in a weird font that was hard to read xD I had games and events planned for my reception, and the people I put in charge of them never hosted them! They just left the supplies laying on the DJ table (and the DJ kept changing my music to weird sad sounding stuff instead of the playlist I spend weeks making)! I didn't eat at my own reception!! But the rest of the wedding was great, and everyone swears they had a wonderful time, so I can't complain too much LOL
Hello from wintery Saskatoon, Saskatchewan Canada! I’d love a pair of socks or a mug for my suggestion of who to work with. A drag Queen!! They can create a look for any occasion and know about blending colours to create a vibrant look!! Like RuPaul or someone form his series drag race. 😀 love you guys!!!💕🎉
I have a turntable, piping bags etc at home. I have most of the tools JJR uses. And I am not a trained chef/baker. I just enjoy it. Love you guys ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I have most of the special decorating tools JJR has and love making cool cakes for my friends, but one time i was at a friend's house and his family wanted me to make a cake, and it was so frustrating making it with whatever I could find in their kitchen. I just said it was "rustic".
The cake came out lovely! I'm glad you were able to remember how difficult it can be without the wonderfully chefy tools. Big, big heart eyes to you for that!! My entire wedding was a DIY disaster. It was, actually, the worst wedding I'd ever gone to. Even today, 23 years later, it's still the worst I've been to. From the crappy lace shirt, to being forced to use one of mom's skirts, to the single dozen chocolate strawberries that neither my wife or I was able to have... Having to go through this disaster in a church whose denomination I fully despise, and having to force the bishop to take out any hint of obeying in there. Crappy dollar store flower centerpieces just big enough to fit around a taper candle - which we weren't able to light - the DIY veil made of really bad headband, dollar store plastic pearls... It was just awful. The only good thing was that the flowers were donated from a family friend's mother's funeral. (yes, we were THAT goth couple XD ) But hey, 23 years later, we're still here!
JJRs no tool cake looks better than the cakes I make with the tools. IMO, experience counts as much as the tools do. But, even my fugly cakes taste delicious cause I use JJRs recipes 😁
I was thinking this when they cut into it at the end - even a not-very-pretty cake is still cake and if you've got cake at the end of it then whatever happened on the way, it's not a disaster (and this cake was very pretty as well as no doubt delicious!!)
I think the butter knife was harsh. I have three offset spatulas in my home kitchen. They are handy and cheap! Also, I LOVE circus peanuts! They aren't good, exactly but they remind me of my great grandmother, who always had some.
Just an FYI for JJR, they make liquid latex for painting your fingernails. So you can paint it on the skin an cuticle around your nail, let it dry, then paint your nails as badly as you please- but its fine cause you just peel the latex away after an it leaves a nice crisp edge. 👁️👄👁️💅🏻 Its like painters tape for your fingers! (So you can finally do the other hand 🤣🤣🤣)
For your kid-designed challenge my kindergartener would like you to make a "chocolate cake with all the colors of the rainbow flowers and roses". We love watching your show together!
Cake disaster: my mom actually used to be a wedding cake maker semi-professionally and she had agreed to make a cake for one of my sister's friends. They wanted this big beautiful 4 tier cake which she was fine with. She made all the cakes and prepped everything for the wedding. She always brought extra icing and decor because she would stack the tiers after she got there so she and my dad drive over to the reception venue with the deconstructed cake. She had done this MANY times so she wasn't worried. After they got there and opened the back of the car to pull out the cakes, two tiers were completely destroyed. They quickly rushed the two intact tiers in and then brought in all the crumbs and pieces of the other two. She ended up missing the ceremony because she was reconstructing the tiers with the pieces she had and covering it with her back-up icing. The cake ended up looking BEAUTIFUL and no one knew but she had to tell the caterer who would be cutting /serving the cake that they could NOT cut two of the tiers. It was a disaster but the bride and groom never knew :)
I LOVE CIRCUS PEANUTS!!! Also I love your cakes! They always look so amazing! I hope that one day my cakes looks half as good as yours. Have a great holiday season!
Story time! At my reception, My maid of honor (my sister) pulled out a list. And when it came time for her speech she continued to read, " To the groom... things to look out for when you married my sister..". She explained ( in front of 250 people) how I used to bark at dogs when I was little.. how when I get excited that I spit.. etc. I was mortified!
AAAHH!! so cool! I love how it looks it's so pretty! My sister wanted a deluxe carrot cake for her birthday this year, so my mom made the cake and I decorated it, I don't have any professional decorating stuff, but I had a butter knife and my mom's lazy-susan, I had a rubber spatula and some zip-lock bags so I got to work. in hindsight, it needed more frosting because the cake was still showing underneath no matter how even I made it. I also used some premade dried icing decorations, they looked like little animals, foxes, raccoons, deer, and owls made up the set, I tried one to see how they taste, they were nasty! and so hard I almost chipped my tooth I swear! Long story short she loved the cake and I actually used some tips you shared here on your show to make the cake the best it could be! it was hilarious watching you use stuff I had to use to make my sister's cake lol! but I think you did so much better XD great video I can't wait for the next one!
Loving the blue nail polish (the hidden OCD in me wishes it was both hands! lol) Your orange cake is very pretty! Not really a DIY wedding disaster, per se, but got married at the j.o.p. and to make it more 'official' the hubby picked flowers from outside the building for me to hold during the 5-minute ceremony...🤷♀️
Simple home made turntable - take the plate and base out of the microwave. Not perfect easy hack. Enjoy your videos - keep them coming. Hello from Sydney Australia.
Yes this works but not for buttercream with actual butter in it! This style of buttercream does not crust, you have to let it set firm in the cooler!! Great tip though!!
I object to the guys not allowing the turn table because a lot of people have lazy susans in their kitchen. I grew up with an amazing double decker lazy susan in my mom’s kitchen and I have multiple in mine (that I some times use to decorate my cakes when I misplace my turntable). I would however, like to see a cake made with no kitchen tools at all. 🧐
Most people have a lazy Susan or turntables and flatting spatula in their kitchen .. the guys really messed with you on this one..lol but it made an amazing episode.. love you guys
Even though I have all the tools, this was a great video. Seriously liked to see how you dealt with the challenges. There's always something to figure out.
Reception disaster (almost... turned out great!): We booked a wedding reception package at a local facility that my family had used for decades. Turns out, the building was in disrepair but the assistant manager kept booking events. The Event Planner contacted us a month before our wedding, said there was no hot water and the place was going under, so she returned what we'd already paid toward our reception (almost $5K), and quit. The assistant manager of the facility then RECHARGED our credit card for the full amount. We contested it and won, got the money back, and then he RECHARGED IT AGAIN! We had to contest again and won, and canceled the card. We had an awesome reception in the backyard. The actual manager of the facility went into hiding so she couldn't be arrested. The assistant manager ended up in jail. The facility sadly is now closed and I believe is still for sale but needs a ton of work to make it functional again.
At my wedding my mother made and decorated my wedding cake. It was beautiful! When it came to cutting the cake we couldn’t cut the cake because the royal icing was like concrete. I held the table while my husband tried to chisel the cake.
My cousin asked me to make her a beach themed wedding cake for her wedding outside of Corpus Christi. I had 3 tiers with white buttercream, ocean blue piping, brown sugar sand, and white chocolate molded seashells. It was so pretty!! But right before cutting, I looked over and the blue piping had run down the side of the cake. A storm was coming in from the gulf of Mexico and the humidity melted it. I was mortified and had to run it back into the hotel kitchen and try to salvage at least one side so they could get pictures with it.
My god. Watching JJR faff about with the final coat of icing and a butter knife was like that scene in Princess diaries where they couldn't decide what hair style to give Mia Thermopolis so she looked like a moose for a hot minute. 😂😂😂 But really though, I think this ended up being one of my favorite cakes, it looks beautiful an it sounds like a delicious flavor 🍊🎂🍰🍴 fantastic job as always
My sister asked me to do her wedding cake this month and I'm nervous as i have never ever made a wedding cake before. This has been very helpful. This video literally made me feel more confident 😆
No wedding disasters here but I tend to be the guest who falls ass over teakettle during during reception parties. I generally get up and laugh it off. This being said, that cake looks DELICIOUS
Instead of a butter knife me an Mum use a spatula and for zesting oranges and lemons we use a cheese grater. 👍👍 The cake still turned out amazing this was an awesome video! 👏
We got married at my husband's parent's cabin. So in the woods. Our dessert was cupcakes and they were to be delivered before the ceremony. Fast forward to after the ceremony and we still have no cupcakes. I call the bakery and get the delivery person's #, my FIL meets them and they follow him to the cabin. Dessert saved which was awesome because they were delicious 😍
We didn’t make our wedding cake, but we did transport it 3 hours to the venue. Unbeknownst to me, there was some collapsing and half the bridal party huddled around the cake to hide it from me while I scurried around the reception hall. Luckily the decorator included an extra bag of icing and our caterer stepped in to fix it and added fresh flowers. I had no idea til after the honeymoon, other than glancing at the cake during the reception and thinking, “huh, it looks a bit crooked.” 😂 We also had to repeat our unity candle lighting music because we made our own literal beacon (#lotrnerds) out of wood and it wouldn’t light. Ironically, once it did, it whipped up a huge flame that got dangerously close to my veil.
I loved the flip book 🤣😂🤣😂

I was thinking this when they cut into it at the end - even a not-very-pretty cake is still cake and if you've got cake at the end of it then whatever happened on the way, it's not a disaster (and this cake was very pretty as well as no doubt delicious!!)
Say, guys, now you know what prize to give away in your next sweepstakes! Cake turn tables! I mean, I know I sure as heck would love one!
I’m loving the nail polish. You go.
Cool idea! I will put it on the list!!
Yeah! New post! Makes my heart happy. 🥰
new challenge! jamse and brandon have to recreate one of jjr’s cakes with his help!
I made orange curd in a slow cooker many moons ago. Delicious 🤤
JJR🥰🥰🥰 been a long time... Love your cakes.. And love you.. Loads of love from India🇮🇳
I love these videos. Watch them as soon as I can everytime.
OMG JJR every single cake you create is a Masterpiece🌟 even When no having your tools you made a Piece of Art✨ you're so creative💛
Fun episode guys!
Best JJR video ever! Laughing so much!
I have a turn table or Lazy Suzan! Also piping bags in fact I have all of that stuff, bar the level, and I say you could've used it all JJR!
If you have a cell phone, you might have access to an app that has a level.
Hey JJR, even without your tools that cake looks amazing. Love watching. ❤
Thanks so much
Dude. I’ve actually helped make a medieval feast over a wooden fire before! Muahahahahahahahaha!
Once I made a turntable just by placing a spinner under the plate, surprisingly it worked
Well done, JJR! I have some of the tools you weren't allowed to use and your cake still looks much better than any I could do. You're a genius!
Loved the Donk commercial. Perfection.
AAAHH!!
The Hobbyist: Please share, Where did you source your premade decorations?
@@karengerber8390 I got them from Walmart! I believe they were around 12 dollars for two packages. 😁
Didn't see how you made the roses for the cake. For not having all of your tools the cake is beautiful. Thank you for sharing and keep on caking 💜💜💜
This video was so much fun! LOL
I am so happy to know you are BACK!!!!😂😂😂
I HAVE ONE OF THOSE JJR BUSINESS CARDS!
I saw he had some at a day of sharing in the Houston area and I snagged one..... yeah, I kept it!!!!
Most people have lazy Susan's when they don't have a cake turntable! 🤣🤣
Loving the blue nail polish (the hidden OCD in me wishes it was both hands! lol)
Your orange cake is very pretty!
Not really a DIY wedding disaster, per se, but got married at the j.o.p. and to make it more 'official' the hubby picked flowers from outside the building for me to hold during the 5-minute ceremony...🤷♀️
I hope the harvesting did not result in a fine...
Sweet thought; perhaps flowers were important to your groom.
Here's wishing you...enough.
♡
She came out beautiful 🧡
The cake is gorgeous!😍😍
Probably my favorite cake you have made. Loving the flavors 😁
This cake is genuinely beautiful
Simple home made turntable - take the plate and base out of the microwave. Not perfect easy hack. Enjoy your videos - keep them coming. Hello from Sydney Australia.
I love this tip!!!!
I love the vibes
One of my everyday tools is paper toweling. It can be used to smooth icing. You let it crust then lightly press paper toweling onto it.
Yes this works but not for buttercream with actual butter in it! This style of buttercream does not crust, you have to let it set firm in the cooler!! Great tip though!!
I use a turntable in my everyday kitchen!
That would be absolutely perfect for a tropical wedding! 😍
Love your videos, they always make me laugh. You could have used a lazy Susan for the turn table. They are found in a lot of kitchens.
This makes me happy. Also, do you have a recipe book?
No book yet. But all of the recipes are on our website!!
I love that cake!
That cake is really pretty and looks really tasty😋
Please, please, please! Someone! Make me a GIF of JJR saying "it's like a song, it's like a dance, it's like an orchestra" 😂💕😂❤😂💕🎂🎂🎂
Oh wow! that's crazy. I'm so happy you had a nice wedding. Backyard weddings are the best because they are usually the most fun!
The cake texture was so cool and the candied oranges were amazing. Can you make an actual gummy-bear, but large one like a cake size, please?
I have a turn table I have an off set spatula and piping bags in my kitchen. Who doesn't have that stuff. LOL
At my wedding my mother made and decorated my wedding cake. It was beautiful! When it came to cutting the cake we couldn’t cut the cake because the royal icing was like concrete. I held the table while my husband tried to chisel the cake.
Oh nooooo!!!!
The flip book!! 😂🥰❤️
As a viewer this was such a fun episode to watch.
I’m also curious how you managed to find two of the shadiest straight boys to make videos with 😂
Ha ha! I love this!!
My wedding cake said Congratulations Dan And Sandy. My name is Samantha
🤣🤣🤣
This literally made me laugh out loud!!!
My god. Watching JJR faff about with the final coat of icing and a butter knife was like that scene in Princess diaries where they couldn't decide what hair style to give Mia Thermopolis so she looked like a moose for a hot minute. 😂😂😂
But really though, I think this ended up being one of my favorite cakes, it looks beautiful an it sounds like a delicious flavor 🍊🎂🍰🍴 fantastic job as always
Even without your tools it beautiful!
My sister asked me to do her wedding cake this month and I'm nervous as i have never ever made a wedding cake before. This has been very helpful. This video literally made me feel more confident 😆
Yes!! Good luck, you will do great!!!
Thanks team@@YouveBeenDesserted . 😉
More "caveman decorating"! Very relatable haha
Just the thought of Tang gives me heartburn!
I had no idea til after the honeymoon, other than glancing at the cake during the reception and thinking, “huh, it looks a bit crooked.” 😂
We also had to repeat our unity candle lighting music because we made our own literal beacon (#lotrnerds) out of wood and it wouldn’t light. Ironically, once it did, it whipped up a huge flame that got dangerously close to my veil.
Wedding disasters.......not making me confident for my wedding next weekend XD
Congrats! It will be great!!
now he knows our pain lol. LOVED this ep!
The stress was thic when Jjr was smudging! His face 😁
That is a very pretty cake.
