Budhanilkantha Temple, also known as the Sleeping Vishnu Temple, is a sacred Hindu temple located in the Kathmandu Valley of Nepal. It is situated approximately 8 kilometers to the north of the Kathmandu city center in the Budhanilkantha municipality. The temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, one of the principal deities in Hinduism.
The main attraction of Budhanilkantha Temple is a large stone sculpture of Lord Vishnu in a reclining position on a coiled serpent called Shesha. The sculpture, carved from a single block of black stone, depicts Lord Vishnu in a sleeping posture floating on the cosmic ocean. The deity is known as Jalakshayan or Narayana.
The temple is surrounded by a pond, and the idol of Lord Vishnu lies in the middle of the pond. The pond itself has various smaller sculptures of gods and goddesses. The unique aspect of the temple is that it represents Lord Vishnu in the Ananta Shayanam (Eternal Sleep) pose, symbolizing the cosmic sleep of the universe.
Devotees and visitors often come to the Budhanilkantha Temple to offer prayers and seek blessings. The temple is also a popular tourist and cultural attraction due to its historical and religious significance. The tranquility of the surroundings and the artistic beauty of the idol make it a place of spiritual and aesthetic appeal.
