  • Update Oct 2019: Wow, just ran across these two free pdfs by Mori, Hiroshi about how to make self-balancing gyroscopic monotrain. Includes all the theory and practical aspects. A must read: thebbb.net/free/theories-and-...
    and: thebbb.net/free/how-to-build-...
    My free ebook to help you construct your own vehicle:
    demej00.wordpress.com/2020/02...
    I present some lessons learned about using a gyroscope to balance a structure or vehicle by constructing a model to demonstrate free precession. I have been able to balance this demonstration model over 15 seconds now before the gyro runs down.
    UPDATE: just occurred to me that I don't need the extra weight - as one side of the gyroscope is already heavier than the other so I just spin up the gyro then swivel the heaviest side to the top and it actually balances longer and smoother than if I add weights.
    You can actually make a motor/rotor gyroscope balance itself on two legs without any gimbal control - just by making the rotor or motor the heavier side of the motor/rotor pair. By being top heavy in a vertical axis gyroscope or one side heavy in a horizontal axis gimbal, it will correct itself as it falls to one side or the other. Also I have calculated and measured the total gyroscope weight to torque produced by the gyroscope and found that it is a 26% ratio - in other words the total gyroscope weight needs to be 26% of the torque produced by the gyroscope (can be calculated at gyroscopes.org/maths) to be able to keep itself balanced on two legs. Interesting stuff!

    Thank you for the video. I want to build a self leveling 'table top', or base, on which two cameras will be placed and pointing in opposite directions. The model will then be placed onto my boat's longitudinal centerline with the cameras pointing to port and starboard respectively. The idea is for the table top, or base, to remain level when the boat rocks side-to-side. When floating down a river I will then maintain a horizontal filming perspective and not have one pointing upwards while the other would point downwards without this self-leveling mechanism

    hi, thx for ur video. u said when u move the gyro (tilt back) the structure will lean to the right,
    so if u want to stabilize when the structure leaning to the right is tilt back the gyro. my question is what happens if u tilt back the gyro when the structure is already in balance position, will it lean to the right. I need this info if I want to build 2 wheel vehicle, because as we know motorcycle need to lean right/left when it comes to corner.

    • @demej00
      @demej00  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Inadhi. Yes, if the vehicle is in balance and you move the gyroscope one way or the other it will force a sideways movement of the vehicle. Good luck with your project. See my two wheel gyro vehicle I build a few years ago.

    13:29 All the gyro machines featured in this video show that weight is added on to the top.
    To make the gyro top heavy without adding weight, drill a new horizontal axis at a lower position than the existing gyro axis. This will change its center of gravity, and it'll keep the overall weight down. _The difficult thing about this is - The two piece axis shafts would need to be longer, or you have to make your tube-frame extend closer to the gyro_ .
    *P.S. I don't know if this axis change - nullifies the gyroscopic procession effect, because the axis is no longer centered through the spinning flywheel.*

    • @demej00
      @demej00  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the idea. Actually, all I had to do was flip the gyro over and it was top heavy without a weight. Worked very well.

    Maybe if there is one more axis if movement, where the gyro can tilt the other way, when the frame starts to tilt to one side, it may fix this

    • @demej00
      @demej00  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the gyro rolls in another axis from side to side, the resulting moment would only affect the pitch and the pitch of the vehicle cannot change since it has a foot in the front and a foot in the back.

    It looks like the wobble starts small and gradually gets larger and larger. At the bottom of gyro try putting a stop so gyro can only move 1/4 or 3/8 inch in both direction. This should stop the increase in wobble, but will balance remain?

    does the gyroscope have to be located centered between the tweo wheels ( incase of a bycicle) or can it be moved further towards the rear wheel and still balance ? .. please answer

    • @demej00
      @demej00  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Max. Just my opinion but between is best while other locations will still work but if it is extremely toward one wheel or the other then there will be an adverse effect on how the bike turns. Doesnt have to be exactly centered though.

      It won't balance if the center of gravity of the gyro is below the center of cross bar, the system will slowly fall aside, due to the precession.

    1. If I build a car on but two wheels, will I be able to balance it with a Gyroscope? While riding it, I mean.
    2. If I build a house on unstable ground, will I be able to balance it with a big enough Gyroscope?

    • @demej00
      @demej00  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      In answer to #1 see Lit Motors C-1 motorcycle and there is a historical precedence for two wheel cars but they are not viable unless using two counter rotating gyroscopes.
      In answer to #2 - anything is possible - a gyroscope can be scaled up. That would be interesting - even a model of a self balancing house.

    How much should be the radius of gyroscopic disc with respect to the mass of the body? Is there any formula how we will judge the radius?

    • @demej00
      @demej00  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Go to this website: www.gyroscopes.org/math.asp
      You can see that by increasing the radius, you can achieve the same force as if you doubled the mass by increasing the thickness of the rotor. So increasing the radius of the rotor is always most effective. But practicality enters in as you don't want a rotor with a diameter so large that it becomes cumbersome to use.

    Jimmy, get yourself a copy of H.Crabtree (1914) "Spinning Tops and Gyroscopic Motion" (free online as its out of copywrite).
    i think if you could get it to spin at a constant speed (motor) you would eliminate a variable.
