You're brilliant, there needs to be more people like you out there. Thank you for being so open in the way you view the world, it's beyond refreshing!
If you read by candlelight, I think it helps to use several candles, have them sitting at a good angle to light the page (a foot from one side of your head is a good position), and try to have something white (or a mirror) behind the candles to bounce more light. Also, if you use a candle to light your way when walking, don't hold the candle in front of you like they do in the movies, because the glare will blind you.
I absolutely love the idea of books and them containing these great stories and the lifes of the charachters- it makes me want to read thousands of books however I'm so intrigued by this concept that I get stuck in amazement and never pick up an actual book so, well, seeing others that are excited about books on TH-cam is a nice way to pass some time

@@nicholaslawrence6926 As a girl who loves vintage-y aesthetics, I also wished girls dressed more like this. It's hard to dress like this when 1) you stand out so much so people might think you look weird, and 2) there are small niche groups of people interested in buying fashion that fits these aesthetics so it's hard to find clothes (especially affordable ones) that look like this. I feel like #2 wouldn't apply as much to guys though because men still dress like this in formal settings I think.
jack about dead poets society: it's about this group of boys who fall in love- me: yes, we know, the main characters are in love and none of the boys are straight except for like one. jack: with poetry and classic literature, me: oh right, he means the plot, never mind
That's exactly what i thought. The look on Neils face when Todd talks in front of the class. Nothing straight about that. Also the chase around the room and so many more scenes. Spoilers ahead for anyone who hasn't seen the film: I'm pretty sure the motivation behind Neils death is not just him wanting to be an actor but him being gay and not being able to be himself.
@@artemis1796 even he didnt seem to understand the nature of romance so one could argue that he only did what was socially expected of him not his own attraction
Fun fact: if I remember correctly, Edgar Allen Poe married his cousin because her family had died and she didn't have any financial support, so people theorize that he did it to help her. It is said that according to their letters, they seemed to have a brother-sister bond than anything else. Of course, still extremely weird, but I bet Victorian-era social services either sucked or were non-existent so yeah.
I've been doing calligraphy as hobby for 15 years now. Let me tell you that your first paper was amazing for being the first one... it just takes so much patience and theory too, knowing all tools well, deciding how many lines and how thick you will use, the time period you are attempting to imitate, how to imagine angles, how to apply pressure to make the lines thicker but not enough to damage the paper... a lot more than meets the eye... but being able to write you name first time is a good sign 😌
A few things: 1. You are a beautiful, handsome young man and you always look great. 2. You are so funny! I was smiling throughout the whole video. 3. Can you do more aesthetics? Like light academia? Cottagecore? 4. Love you!
Yeah, I have been doing that. All of my Zoom meetings where people expect to see my face I dress in super dapper clothing, because I need a reason to change my clothing out of pajamas and nudity. I also have 10 very nice silk handkerchiefs that I haven't used and they are a lot of fun.
For the people who are wondering what the opening piece is... It's Cello Suite No.1 by Bach Later in the Video at around 12:16 is being played Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata 1st Movement PS: If you forget the name of it, just type "That One Cello Song" and you'll get this piece
I'm Indian and here we have our own version of this dark academia look, it's more like a slightly hippie look popular in colleges and universities. But it's not received very well and Gives out major "pseudo intellectual" vibes.
there is a specific name for this? or just search on Pinterest for Indian dark academia? considering that India looks to have hot weather like my country this can be useful for me
Listen Jack, my dad works from home all the time and he wouldn't be caught dead in anything less than a shirt and a vest. Just dress the way you want. It looks awesome and you deserve to look amazing when you look in the mirror. Besides, when you dress well you feel well, and we all need a little more of that.
my dad is exactly the same and has been dressing like that for as long as I can remember. He's "overdressed" most of the time, but he couldn't care less. And I love him for that!
As a brown hijabi girl, I just love your conclusion, and the critical thoughts of the dark academia aesthetic. I love the whole thing, but it is easy to feel out of place.
Tumblr has seen some uprise in poc dark academia so I suggest looking around and seeing if you can find something that calls to you. I've been coming across a lot of wonderful non West European aesthetic as well as book recommendations from various cultures. So yeah, when you feel like it give it a try 😊
@@Visplight I'm talking about media representation, which is where "aesthetics" come from. You don't see those "rich brown people" which is the problem.
As a white person who likes the dark academia aesthetic, I also feel this is problematic and worry about the lack of diversity. I hope you feel welcomed and included wherever your interests take you.
OM I'M A DESI MUSLIM THAT LIKES DARK ACADEMIA TOO WE ARE THE SAME PERSON- But like on a more serious note, dark academia IS centred around like peaky blinders fashion, the era peaky blinders was set in really had a lot of racist and sexist views and hardly any poc, there's not much representation at all and to some people it's very controversial. But this aesthetic romanticises it a lot. But being in the same situation as you I still have a ton of dark academia based clothes, trust me GET THEM YOU WONT REGRET ITTT 😌
I was looking for this comment haha because I was going to mention it. In this case, showing preference for the film is "fine", because that is the original work/material. In my mind, it is the same as preferring a book over its film adaptation. I don't know if that made sense lol
@@aiklarkibheegibhaagisi hi, I think that is perfectly fine as well!! as there are some film adaptations that I prefer over the original book/material. it's a matter of opinion :))
Jack saying he’s not attractive enough to be grouped with the Pinterest models was such a huge lie. While clicking on the video I was like “Wow he’s perfect for this!!!” You literally blend in with everyone in those photos so don’t even.
I really recommend reading Babel as a source of non-white dark academia vibes! it takes place in oxford and follows a set of students studying translation. i loved the book, although it is quite dark and a little heavy.
As someone who dresses up the way I want every day, who ever says you have to have a reason to dress up (who needs jeans?)? Honestly I would love it if more men would dress up for every day purposes!
Idk if you need this but calligraphy is easy - you are just moving the pen wrong. If you want lines to be thick, you press the pen to the paper and go down, letting the pen tip split and release more ink. If you want thin lines, you go up, lifting off the pressure. To make it pretty and consistent, when you write and go down, the line should be thick, if you move up, you make the line thin. Trust me, it’s a really fun skill to have, give it another shot (or watch a tutorial).
I had to learn calligraphy in secondary school art class and I just couldn't get it. I left with ink all over my hands every time I tried and that's put me off for life 😅
Aisling god, that is a downside. my mom once spilled my entire bottle of ink onto our very light wooden floors - spent a couple of days trying to get it off with nail polish remover. these days i prefer brush pens - way less messy 😆
Dumb question, but is it worth trying to learn calligraphy if you’re left handed? I struggle with normal ballpoint pens because as a leftie I do more pushing than pulling if that makes sense (because I write from left to right with my left hand) and I’m worried that would translate to struggling with calligraphy.
Obviously I am a little late to this video but I really needed to thank you for bringing a spark of humour and class into my lonely life. At 71 yrs old I watch you and wish I could go back in time to my 20s. Stop belittling your looks as you are one of the more desirable young men on TH-cam.

Not trying to be rude but I don't understand this, this is very much an "old english" style, why is it surprising that it features mainly white people? It doesn't mean it's exclusive
@@tictac2therevenge291 Yeah, it's like being an anime weeaboo and going "everyone is Japanese!" No duh. That's where you got the aesthetic. Now, *you* don't have to be of any particular race to enjoy your Naruto costume or tweed elbow-patch blazer, but... like... are you seriously surprised that when you take an old cultural aesthetic, all the old inspo is gonna be from the racial group that created the aesthetic? Really? That's where it came from.
@@Visplight It's not that it's surprising, it's just a disclaimer that a lot of this aesthetic privileges or idealizes only a single kind of person and their perspectives. And not just any kind of person, rich white men specifically; already pretty much the most privileged group on earth. Of course you don't have to be a specific race to enjoy something like this which is exactly why it would be nice to see more representation among different kinds of people in a movement like this.
@@pwilll this! Especially considering this ‘aesthetic’ was originally meant to be a critique on the toxic aspects of academia, it would make perfect sense for it to be lead by people of color and other people that are not represented equally in academia as a whole!

Some ideas you were remiss of: 1) jazz music, 2) drug use, 3) global cultures study/influence & travel, 4) Berlitz language learning on vinyl records, & 5) learning how to dance from vinyl records. These are just a few of course. What an inspiration you are. T/Y. 📚
I used to use a typewriter when I was a kid because my mother had an old one. If you're going to do that, you need to have some Wite-Out or similar correction fluid on hand because that's the way to deal with mistakes if you don't want to completely retype the page. Just put a little on the place where you typed a wrong letter (you don't need much, don't overdo it), blow on it to dry it faster, and when it's dry, type the right letter on that space. You use the backspace key to back up one space at a time to get the paper in the right position to type on the space you want. "Backspace" literally means that it takes you backward one space.
Ah yes, typewriters. I used to use a type writer and I'm very experienced (my kindergarten teacher had a type writing in the classroom that I would essentially keyboard mash and incorrectly spell my full legal name on over and over for half an hour every weekday.) I am literally a type writing master here.
you turned out the lights and reminded me of one of the many times i’ve had to do homework by candle light 🕯 I actually enjoyed days like those because no one could be distracted by television or their cell phone since the electricity is out (usually due to a storm) and would all come into the living room and talk with each other
I loved The Secret History, but yeah some references definitely went over my head a bit 😅 The typewriter & calligraphy attempts were brilliant 😂 This is such a fun and creative idea!

Holy SHIT! This video was pure gold, it had everything: the look, the feel, but most importantly... the criticism! It was so on point! It's hard to dress like this when 1) you stand out so much so people might think you look weird, and 2) there are small niche groups of people interested in buying fashion that fits these aesthetics so it's hard to find clothes (especially affordable ones) that look like this. I feel like #2 wouldn't apply as much to guys though because men still dress like this in formal settings I think.
jack about dead poets society: it's about this group of boys who fall in love-
me: yes, we know, the main characters are in love and none of the boys are straight except for like one.
jack: with poetry and classic literature,
me: oh right, he means the plot, never mind
That's exactly what i thought. The look on Neils face when Todd talks in front of the class. Nothing straight about that. Also the chase around the room and so many more scenes. Spoilers ahead for anyone who hasn't seen the film: I'm pretty sure the motivation behind Neils death is not just him wanting to be an actor but him being gay and not being able to be himself.
yeah the entire film is so queercoded like the only straight character was maybe Knox
@@artemis1796 even he didnt seem to understand the nature of romance so one could argue that he only did what was socially expected of him not his own attraction
I thought that too lol
Fun fact: if I remember correctly, Edgar Allen Poe married his cousin because her family had died and she didn't have any financial support, so people theorize that he did it to help her. It is said that according to their letters, they seemed to have a brother-sister bond than anything else. Of course, still extremely weird, but I bet Victorian-era social services either sucked or were non-existent so yeah.
Jack speaking /cursive/ is literally everything
Absolutely. 😭😭

A few things:
1. You are a beautiful, handsome young man and you always look great.
2. You are so funny! I was smiling throughout the whole video.
3. Can you do more aesthetics? Like light academia? Cottagecore?
4. Love you!

@@cyberneticsquid-godofmassd3759 and I bet you looked fabulous!
It's Cello Suite No.1 by Bach
Later in the Video at around 12:16 is being played Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata 1st Movement
PS: If you forget the name of it, just type "That One Cello Song" and you'll get this piece
I'm Indian and here we have our own version of this dark academia look, it's more like a slightly hippie look popular in colleges and universities. But it's not received very well and Gives out major "pseudo intellectual" vibes.
there is a specific name for this? or just search on Pinterest for Indian dark academia? considering that India looks to have hot weather like my country this can be useful for me
@SRC_FR - what are the core literary texts of the Indian dark aesthetic?
@@TheG4BR1EL4 i dont think its the same but if you look up "desi academia" you can find some stuff!
I’m Indian but in the US, I would love to know more about this!

One of my close friends does the same! Working from his computer at home but always well-dressed!

In fairness, rich brown people have been going to old British academia for 400 years. Just saying.
OM I'M A DESI MUSLIM THAT LIKES DARK ACADEMIA TOO WE ARE THE SAME PERSON-
But like on a more serious note, dark academia IS centred around like peaky blinders fashion, the era peaky blinders was set in really had a lot of racist and sexist views and hardly any poc, there's not much representation at all and to some people it's very controversial. But this aesthetic romanticises it a lot. But being in the same situation as you I still have a ton of dark academia based clothes, trust me GET THEM YOU WONT REGRET ITTT 😌

The book Dead Poets Society actually came after the movie. So that’s probably the reason why the movie is much better :)
Well that's some ✨elite✨ knowledge
I was looking for this comment haha because I was going to mention it. In this case, showing preference for the film is "fine", because that is the original work/material. In my mind, it is the same as preferring a book over its film adaptation. I don't know if that made sense lol
I was about to mention it lol
But i love the book ;(
@@aiklarkibheegibhaagisi hi, I think that is perfectly fine as well!! as there are some film adaptations that I prefer over the original book/material. it's a matter of opinion :))
Jack saying he’s not attractive enough to be grouped with the Pinterest models was such a huge lie. While clicking on the video I was like “Wow he’s perfect for this!!!” You literally blend in with everyone in those photos so don’t even.
He even looked better than Radcliffe in those photos
I really recommend reading Babel as a source of non-white dark academia vibes! it takes place in oxford and follows a set of students studying translation. i loved the book, although it is quite dark and a little heavy.

I couldn't agree more
Same. 😭
Chris H i’m sure you can look into finding quick drying ink or try using brush markers instead!
@@marielibertyraven hmm maybe I’ll give the regular one a try just to see, but I’ll keep that in mind thanks!

I used to use a type writer and I'm very experienced (my kindergarten teacher had a type writing in the classroom that I would essentially keyboard mash and incorrectly spell my full legal name on over and over for half an hour every weekday.)
I am literally a type writing master here.
