    This video is split into two parts, a visual journey around Orkney, followed by our Orkney travel tips and a chat about our trip
    ➤ JUMP AHEAD TO OUR ORKNEY TRAVEL INFO 17:41
    Welcome to the Orkney Isles! This archipelago sits off the northeast tip of Scotland and can be reached by flight or ferry. About 70 islands make up Orkney, but only 20 are inhabited. During our week in Orkney we visited Mainland, Hoy, and Sanday. Each has a unique character, and we loved seeing how the landscape and island vibe changed across the isles.
    Mainland is home to the islands' capital, Kirkwall, and is the largest and most populated of the isles. It's also where most people's journey to Orkney starts, and has plenty to keep you busy for a few days. We spent our time here visiting the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Skara Brae, the Ring of Brodgar, and the Standing Stones of Stenness (all dating from around 5000 years ago!), enjoying coastal walks, and learning about Orkney's fascinating wartime history.
    On Hoy we spent a couple of nights at the open bothy at stunning Rackwick Bay, hiking to the Old Man of Hoy (one of Scotland's most famous sea stacks and a magnet for climbers), and generally soaking up the atmosphere on this Highlands-esque island.
    Our final 2 days were spent on Sanday, the largest of the North Isles and home to Orkney's most spectacular beaches. Tresness Beach was our favourite, a stunning expanse of white sand backed by towering dunes. We explored the 5000 year old Quoyness Chambered Cairn, slipped and slided our way across seaweed at low tide towards Start Point Lighthouse, and spotted the remnants of the B98 German Destroyer, washed up on Sanday over 100 years ago.
    We've covered a lot of the places featured in this video in our accompanying Orkney travel guides (see above). These include detailed maps, the best places to visit, plus transport and accommodation info to help you plan your own Orkney trip.

      @@helen-marie3562 Both buying and moving house is considered essential travel. We moved into our rental about 4 days before lockdown (previous rental, the owner retired and needed the house to live in) - so we have to move or stay here for another year.
      I'd be far more inclined to complain about the people who are all trekking off to their offices not wearing face masks than someone who never leaves the house.

    Hello. I, ve been living in Orkney for one year back in 1972 and with my wife we dwelled in the last house down in South Ronaldsay that belonged to some English friends living in Evie, main land. That was just before the north sea oil changed everything. It was a beautiful period of my life. I'm from Italy, from Sardinia, another island!!!!!!

    I love the care you take over your edits. Its so easy to fall into doing something that you think will work for YTube instead on concentrating on what you are good at. I spend my life fighting the urge to take short cuts and drop clips in with balancing the audio etc, so I fully appreciate the presentations you two make. Carry on!

    • @GoingTheWholeHogg
      @GoingTheWholeHogg  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      We really appreciate that. It's always good to get feedback from someone who understands the process and what goes into it. We often get frustrated with ourselves over how long it takes to produce a final edit, as we just can't help trying to make everything as good as it can possibly be. But we've definitely learned over time to focus on quality rather than trying to chase what we think works on TH-cam. Thank you very much for watching and taking the time to leave such a thoughtful comment. Like I said, we greatly appreciate it.

    Hello, Thanks for a great video, its very inspiring to get ourselves up to Orkney again this summer, I have an old schoolmate who has lived on Orkney for over 20 years now having marrying a local lass, got up to see for a few days in 2012 and a lovely time me and the wife had, we have visited Scotland many times over the last 30 odd years mainly on motorcycle ( not just the NC 500 I must add ) but next time we will get across the Pentland Firth to visit Orkney again.
    Thanks again for great video, well appreciated.

    Interesting video. In October 2019 I spent 3 days on Mainland and did the usual places, having never been there before but had been to Scotland many times (Glenlyon). The people were friendly and helpful. The middle day was a full on gale but unsurprisingly the Ring and Skara Brae withstood the blast.
    Of course, remember the Wireless Museum (!) and St Magnus' Cathedral in Kirkwall. St Magnus' is outstanding; I think it was John Eliot Gardner of the Monteverdi Choir who, after recording all of JS Bach's many cantatas throughout Europe and Britain, said vast St Magnus' was the most authentically ancient cathedral of all he'd visited. Indeed, it is a great treasure.

      Thank you Alexander. Actually, we were there at a similar time. All the footage for this video was shot in September 2019. We were on a month long trip around the northern areas of Scotland and the weather was a real challenge, with Orkney by far the windiest. We had a great time nonetheless. Never made it to St Magnus' Cathedral but have since read about how special it is. We'll make sure to visit next time. Had to Google 'Glenlyon' - looks like a good place to live. Thanks for your thoughtful comment.

    Gosh this is such a good video. Many many thanks. I found your separation into two halves worked very well for me - the scenic full of ambient music views (suitably volume adjusted to minimise irritating wind noise!) and then undiluted well presented info about hows and whats. We're very lucky to have a son and his wife in Edinburgh, so we can combine visiting them with launching from there into the rest of Scotland. We've 'done' the Borders, Arran, Perthshire, Stirling, Argyle, Mull, Gairloch/Poolewe, Moray Firth, NE Skye, Lewis and Harris .... guess where we want to go next?

    Thank you! Fabulous in every way. I visitedOrkney in 2005 on a day trip fro John O’Groats. A bus met the ferry and the guided tour was crammed full. I remember it all well. I know I will never travel o/s again but armchair travel is good too. I will have to be content walking on beaches here in Australia, and doing some small scale camping. As an aside, the Quigley sisters played Celtic music at the Port Fairy Music Festival many years ago, before my visit to Orkney. They described their culture on Orkney so well, verbally and musically. I remember it well.

    • @GoingTheWholeHogg
      @GoingTheWholeHogg  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for watching and appreciating, Elisabeth! Was it seeing the Quigley Sisters that made you want to visit Orkney in the first place? It's a good thing Australia has plenty of beautiful beaches and camp spots, lots to enjoy without going overseas.

    • @elisabethbenn1572
      @elisabethbenn1572 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GoingTheWholeHogg thank you for your reply. Prompt too! Maybe it was. It could have been Wrigley, not Quigley. They were sisters, composers, violinists and storytellers, and very funny. I was a schoolteacher, interested in geography, history, culture etc. the sisters described their cold windy treeless island. I was impressed, because I remember it so well. Learning a musical instrument is compulsory on Orkney due to the long periods people are confined indoors. They must have something creative and edifying to do. Well, here we are in Victoria enduring long Covid lockdowns. If we were as well prepared as the Orkney children we would be better placed to keep our mental health and humor. I was also impressed with the recount of the sensible headmaster of the Orkney school who declared the students could remain on holidays because the proper holiday dates were ruined by wind and rain. Yes, I took it all in. Now those things are cultural, ie, how people adapt life to their environment. It is not about scenery. You can’t see that on a bus tour. In 2005 I took a year off work to travel. I used hostels and public buses and travelled very lightly. The UK was so meaningful for me. All the English Literature I loved and studied was laid out before me. Also the interesting history. BTW, I was born in Holland and was a child migrant to Australia. I also loved going to my home country. As for Australia, what a great land. This year when there are no Civid restrictions I want to deepen my love of indigenous places and culture. I have an indigenous friend and artist to draw upon. Bit long, but, you did ask! Thanks for your work. Regards, Elisabeth

    Those drones and cameras are incredible. Shots like this could only be taken from an aircraft only a short time ago an the quality blows me away. Yeah, the footage always impresses us, and we don't even have a particularly 'fancy' drone. I was very into film photography in my late teens and learnt how to use a dark room at school, so was quite resistant to getting a digital camera at first. Now (many years later) we couldn't be without digital for the kind of work we create. It would be nice to get some use out of my medium format cameras every now and again, but too much is already stuffed in our backpacks, no chance they can fit in! Kim

      It's interesting that all the place names in Orkney are still essentially Norse. Strom = stream = Norse straum, Norwegian strØm. -oy=island = Norse, ey, Norwegian Øy. Westray is particularly Norse, since they used to add -rs to the ends of words and names. It wasn't Harald, but Haraldr. Same there. it's not westay, it's westray. A reminder that it was once considered part of Norway and was settled from the east, not the south.
