If I recall correctly, you referenced The Raid duology in one of your earlier videos. So, I decided to give it a watch. I thought the first film was excellent. Low budget, gritty and dirty and well within the realms of believability, considering the power that some of these organised gangs have. However, the second left me feeling exhausted and actually wishing it would hurry up and finish. Yes, the fight scenes were superbly choreographed and executed (I particularly enjoyed the mud fight scene in the prison exercise yard) and the characters were well defined, but overall it felt as if it had been written to attract a western audience. It pandered to the western expectation of an 'oriental' martial arts/supercop/thriller. Less is more, in my opinion, as we got with the first film. Still, without giving away spoilers, I do agree with you about the last line spoken. Perfect ending!
A US remake? Ugh! I can't see any US studio making a film in which their heroic SWAT teams would be taken down so easily. They'd probably end the film with the 'hero' finding a way to blow the whole building whilst miraculously saving all the innocent residents, especially a young, single mother and her baby...unless they decide to go down the woke route with a STRONG FEMALE protagonist.
Generally I don't bother with US remakes as it's rare they even understand the source material, but I did come across one low budget US remake of an Australian short film that was well done. 'The Perfect Host,' (2010) written and directed by Nicholas Tomnay (based on his original short film) is essentially a black comedy/thriller about a wounded robber on the run who cons his way into someone's house, only to slowly realise that his 'host' enjoys sadistic mind games. Starring David Hyde Pierce (brilliantly cast against type) as the host, and Clayne Crawford as the man on the run, it's delightfully perverse and oddly enjoyable. Sorry, very little blood letting though.
Another film I recommend is 2LDK, (2003) directed by Yukihiko Tsutsumi. Part of the 'Duel Project' (its partner film being 'Aragami: The Raging God of War', directed by Ryuhei Kitamura. Basically it's a supernatural samurai showdown). Both films were made after a bet - to see who could make the better film under certain restrictive rules: no more than three main characters, at least one of whom must die by the end; one month to write and prepare and one week to shoot. Low budget and roughly one hour in length. 2LDK follows one fatal evening in a flat, temporarily shared by two jealous actresses who both auditioned for the same role in a film titled 'Yakuza Wives.' As the evening wears on, their petty differences escalate from verbal insults into full-on violence...with a surprising twist at the end. It's available to view, alas only in 360p, on YT: th-cam.com/video/6wOlI3ZP3NI/w-d-xo.html
Anyway, that's enough of my ramblings. Cheers.
I find myself rewatching the first Raid film the most for similar reasons, it's the most straight-forward and doesn’t drag on as much. The second film dragging on doesn’t bother me as much on subsequent viewings as it did back when I first saw the film, although it might’ve played a role in how exhausted I was after my first viewing lmao. A US Remake doesn’t really interest me that much either, especially because of how accessible/watchable the original films still are to this day. Might get stuck in development hell anyway lol.
The Perfect Host seems familiar so I’m sure I’ve heard about it in the past but haven’t seen. Sounds like it has a great premise though that works as both a short film and feature film, seems appropriate that it doesn’t have much violence/bloodletting because after looking up information it seems like a film that’s meant to be more psychological rather than gory/in your face (but that’s just my assumption). I haven’t heard about 2LDK and Aragami on the other hand but the idea behind the creation of those films are really interesting and how they were made. Must’ve been challenging to film them in such a short amount of time but those restrictions and challenges sound like they might’ve resulted in films that are definitely very interesting or creative, it wouldn’t be the first time for sure.
Idk know too much about American remakes. But I think Oldboy 2013 is enough for me to realize that they’re unnecessary. And by an acclaimed director no less. If The Raid remake is good, cool. If not, I won’t be one bit surprised. The Raid duology is perhaps my all time favorite action series and they should be left as is.
That aside, I’m excited for Gareth’s new movie Havoc which is supposed to be his foray back into action. Although I’d like to see him tackle something in the John Wick world, should he and Chad Stahelski see eye to eye on how they approach action films. But hey, Ballerina is being done by the director of the Underworld movies so, maybe?
Great video btw, this was a fun watch. :) glad you enjoy these films as much as I do!
Hey why didn't you like the prison fight in the raid 2 cause i saw many TH-camrs were really grossed out cause how burtal it is
