Hardly a Hijab in Sight: New Nike Ad in Saudi Arabia Sends a Big Message

  • Nike's groundbreaking campaign "What If You Can?" has made waves in Saudi Arabia, marking the first-ever ad film targeting Saudi women and sparking debate about women's roles in the changing kingdom. Directed by Haifaa Al-Mansour, Saudi Arabia's pioneering female filmmaker, the ad showcases a young Saudi girl imagining herself participating in various sports, notably featuring women without hijabs. Al-Mansour expressed her hope for the campaign's impact, stating, "I hope the film will encourage young women to push their boundaries and always look for new opportunities." The ad has garnered mixed reactions, with some praising it as a sign of progress in Saudi society, while others criticize it as an attempt to impose Western values. Despite ongoing barriers to women's sports participation in Saudi Arabia, the campaign aims to inspire girls to explore their physical potential and build confidence through movement, reflecting the complex interplay between tradition and modernization in the kingdom.

Pity that they jailed women who were driving on their own. "Saudi Arabia's terrorism court has sentenced Loujain al-Hathloul, the activist who led the push to allow Saudi women to drive, to nearly six years in prison. Hathloul's case has drawn widespread scrutiny since her arrest in the spring of 2018. Hathloul, 31, was the most high-profile of a group of female activists who were arrested shortly before the Saudi kingdom lifted its long-standing ban on women driving. Her family says she has been tortured and not allowed to have phone calls or visits from her family."

Atatürk changed the country to constitutional democracy and Republic with and by big and great war after Western countries divided former ottoman territory between themselves by literal occupying the Land. Atatürk emerged as army general and all normal citizens and peope were mobilized to defend the country from Western occupation. The red color of turkish Flag is the blood of the people dying in war, thats why the turkish put up the flag everywhere, not just for national pride but to remember the blood.
The arabs are not revolutionist like the french or turks. Turks were always an army and soldier people, starting from being the hittite army fighting with pharaohs till signing first peace treaty in history, to be part of sassan, Roman empire, ottoman empire. The mentaliy of average people is different in turkiye bc every woman and man is raised to be a fighter, defend own rights as citizen, not be peasant of monarchy like arabia. Turks could leave anytime their comfortable live for revolution. Just like iranian btw.
So saud leadership are not revolutionist or army general who fight for a humanistic democracy and constition , like a republic, that would be end of their own power as monarchy and reign, sauds want change but without change - that is known for many decades.
Saudi monarchy probably want to be like morocco , just monarchy and no real human rights with lots of corruption, only wealth for his Clan and keep people working and poor and not revolt for rights as citizens.

"Nike" in ancient Greek times was more a personification than a real goddess . How do Muslims get around using the western chronological system which is based on the birth of Christ (BCE/CE) which places Jesus Christ at the center of human history.? This would be a kind of "shirk" as well I should imagine . I don't know Arabic but I should imagine that the names of the days of the week and of the months - as they are in European languages- based on the names of pagan divinities as are the names of the planets and the constellations. I should imagine that the Arabic names are based on Babylonian and Sumerian names as these cultures were pioneers in astronomy.

They stole everything and claim it as ibn made this discovered that. I see so many videos with Muslim apologists berating the west saying well if it wasn’t ibn Muhammad al shahid (I can’t remember proper names) you wouldn’t have distillation, flight etc etc.
And not even acknowledging that a lot of these advancements inventions and discoveries were made before the 7th century and specifically from Persia and Mesopotamia.
It’s copy and paste for everything.

Muhammad was written on both sides of Syrian coins along with a person holding a long cross. These coins were dated around Al-Malik, which means the term "mhmd" or muhammad was a descriptive term associated with the Cross or Jesus Christ, during the Umayyad caliph period. I find it hilarious that Muslims that name their kids Mohammed are in fact naming them after Jesus Christ.

@@latasha9898 Early Islamic history is very murky and uncertain and there are many theories around that Islam was essentially a Christian heretical movement with Arab overtones and that a lot of the Koran itself consists of Syriac lectionaries used in Christian worship. Nineteenth century French historian Ernst Renan once famously declared that Islam, unlike Christianity, originated under the direct gaze of history and that even the minute details of its early history are clear. But I think he is being proved increasingly wrong.

Countries with majority population have huge differences. Turkey, Albania, Bosnia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistán, Kyrgyzstan, Tunisia, etc are secular countries with majority Muslim population. Women live liberal lives. For example, Turkey has working infrastructure, subways and health care system. Much better than many states in Western Europe and even North America. Urban cities of Turkey are full of women that wear and do whatever they want. They date men freely as well. Many of them are in high positions at their jobs. As most French, Germans, Americans, etc are ignorant of Turkey and other secular countries, they do not want to search. No surprise. Many people are not aware of secular diversity of Turkey and other secular countries with Muslim populations. Muslims tend to be much more liberal than theocratic ones. There are millions of atheist, agnostic, deist, etc. people in those countries too.
